Hello all,
I'm new and need help. Did some research on the HJT scanner but am a little nervous about using considering everything I've read on it tells me novice users are advised against self healing with HJT. Sorry to start intro with a problem - my laptop is riddled with Trojans and just recently has been taken over by something new. I cannot log on to internet without being dragged to an anti-virus site that demands I download their software to fix my virus problem. Without even logging on, I get pop-ups that tells me I have been attacked and need to download specific anti-virus. I just need to clean my system out but am afraid of doing some permanent damage. I've removed all important data from my hard drive (pictures, letters, etc.), but lack the knowledge in dealing with HJT or other type remedies. If anyone can help, I would greatly appreciate it.

Glad to have you with us! Please post your question in the Virus part of this forum. They'll be able to address the hi-jack log you'll be doing. Up front you need to scan with AVG & spybot search, destroy which are both free.

As zandiago has said, download HijackThis from here. Download it to your desktop and NOT a temporary folder.
Start HJT & press the "Do a system scan and save a log file" button. When the scan is finished a window will pop up giving you the option of where to save it. Save it to desktop where it is easy to access. Open the log file and copy the entire contents of the file & paste it into the body of your post. DO NOT FIX ANYTHING YET. Most of what is there is necessary for the running of your system.

Glad to have you with us! Please post your question in the Virus part of this forum. They'll be able to address the hi-jack log you'll be doing. Up front you need to scan with AVG & spybot search, destroy which are both free.

Thank you for your quick reply. As per your instructions:

Don't seem to have problem of pop-ups demanding I download anti-virus software anymore. And although I can't auto set my homepage, atleast it doesn't auto default to that suspect anti-virus homepage. Does this mean my computer is fixed or is there something lurking in wait? I live-updated Symantec and Windows just in case. Is there something else I need to do next? You've been such a big help so far - Please advise.

Can you please do the following.

===============

Scan with HijackThis and then place a check next to all the following, if present:

R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant =

Now, close all instances of Internet Explorer and any other windows you have open except HiJackThis, click "Fix checked".

===============

Locate and delete the following item(s), if present. Make sure you are able to view system and hidden files/ folders:

folders...

C:\WINDOWS\system32\375013
C:\Program Files\NetProject

files...

C:\361101032252060718.exe
C:\361101032252090593.exe

-

Note that some of these file(s)/folder(s) may or may not be present. If present, and cannot be deleted because they're 'in use', try deleting them in Safe Mode by doing the following:

  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear.

Select the first option to run Windows in Safe Mode hit enter.

-

Reboot.

Please download SmitfraudFix (by S!Ri)
Extract the content (a folder named SmitfraudFix) to your Desktop.

Open the SmitfraudFix folder and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press "Enter"; a text file will appear, which lists infected files (if present).
Please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.

Note : process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky) as a "RiskTool"; it is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert the user.

As requested, ran HJT, Fix-check and ran SmitfraudFix. Quarantine log:

»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»» End

I hope I followed all instructions provided - Is there perhaps something else that I need to do? Or does this mean my system is clean? Please advise.

That was just a scan of your pc to see if you had a smitfraud infection. The log shows that you do, so please do the following;

You should print out these instructions, or copy them to a Notepad file for reading while in Safe Mode, because you will not be able to connect to the Internet to read from this site.

Please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :

  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu with options should appear;
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press "Enter".
  • Choose your usual account.

Once in Safe Mode, open the SmitfraudFix folder again and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
Select option #2 - Clean by typing 2 and press "Enter" to delete infected files.

You will be prompted : "Registry cleaning - Do you want to clean the registry ?"; answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter" in order to remove the Desktop background and clean registry keys associated with the infection.

The tool will now check if wininet.dll is infected. You may be prompted to replace the infected file (if found); answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter".

The tool may need to restart your computer to finish the cleaning process; if it doesn't, please restart anyway into normal Windows. A text file will appear onscreen, with results from the cleaning process; please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply along with a new HijackThis log.
The report can also be found at the root of the system drive, usually at C:\rapport.txt

Warning : running option #2 on a non infected computer will remove your Desktop background.

As requested, I ran Smitfraudfix.cmd in Safe Mode but it did not proceed to next step of checking wininet.dll.
The rapport.txt and new HJT log follows:

Log is clean. How is your PC?

It looks like problem solved. No issues so far - Thank you so much for your help. It restores my faith in humanity to know there is someone like you in this world who helps those in need. Thank you so much.

Joso2

You are welcome :).

Now that your PC is clean you need to follow these easy steps to keeping it this way:

Download CCleaner and install, then run it. It will clear out your temp folders.

  1. Uncheck "Cookies" under "Internet Explorer".
  2. Click on Run Cleaner in the lower right-hand corner. This can take quite a while to run.
  3. Close when finished.

Secure your Internet Explorer by going here and following the instructions there.

Better yet, use an alternative browser! Download FireFox and give it a run. It is far more secure than Internet Explorer. Or, you can get Opera which in my opinion, is better still.

Use a firewall to help prevent your PC's control being usurped by undesireables. There is a link to a good, free firewall in my signature.

Install and keep updated, AVG anti-spyware, Ad-Aware SE and Spybot S&D.
Run them all on a regular basis, following the maker's recommendations.

Install an anti-virus. There are some good, free AV's available today. Make sure that it is updated regularly and have it scan your system often.

Check for Windows Updates. Microsoft regularly post updates for your systems safe running. Make sure to take advantage of this. Reboot when installed and return to make sure there are no others.

Empty the Recycle Bin.

For XP users.
After something like this it is a good idea to Flush the Restore Points and start fresh.
To flush the XP system Restore Points.

Go to Start | Run and type msconfig and press enter.

When msconfig opens, click the Launch System Restore Button.
On the next page, click the System Restore Settings link on the left.

Check the box labelled 'Turn off System restore'.

Reboot. Go back in and Turn System Restore Back on. A new Restore Point will be created.

Note that all previous restore points will be lost.

===============

If you have any more problems, post back.
