None of my .lnk (shortcuts) or my .exe files will respond. When clicked, they open the "windows cannot open this file" dialog box. I have run adaware and macafee (by renaming .exe files to .com files) both came up with numerous hits but removing them have not solved the problem. I ran registry mechanic thinking that the virus was removed but registry not fixed, to no avail. I downloaded the reg fix "xp_exe_fix.reg" and "linkfile_fix.reg" the exe fix works for one boot then respawns on the next reboot. The link fix seems to work as the icons load but when a shortcut is clicked on, they turn back to the default windows icon. I have downloaded and tryed hijack this but the output is greek to me, I was hoping that someone could help me with my problem. I will insert the hijackthis log.

Thanks in advance.

None of the information on that page was able to solve my particular problem. I tryed the links from that page also. It wasn't a total waste though, I have found a single recurring malware, cws.systeminit. Not sure if this is what is causing my problem, but it seems the likely culprit. still searching for a solution, have tryed CWShredder but no luck.

While you are waiting to hear back from Crunchie or one of the other experts, you might want to update your HijackThis to version 1.98.2. It may pick up some things that the older version didn't that need to be fixed. Post that log, and then I'm sure someone will be along to help you with what you already found, and anything else that may be in your log. :)

Thanks for the tip.

After many hours I finally solved this problem. For anyone else with this problem, it was caused by the hpcoretech processes and the HP entries. I wiped out virtually everything on hijackthis to find this out. I had actually given up and was going to do a fresh reboot so I decided to just start removing things to see if I could catch it first. So far PC seems fine, I don't think that I will actually have to reinstall windows. By the way after wiping out the software, you need to run the registry fixes from the site linked by crunchie.

Thanks for getting back. Good work on the fix :).

Open Notepad, and paste the following in the file:

REGEDIT4

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\lnkfile\shellex\ContextMenuHandlers]

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\lnkfile\shellex\ContextMenuHandlers\{00021401-0000-0000-C000-000000000046}]

Save it as temp.reg (choost all file types first, so notepad does not append .txt to the file). Then browse to the file, and double click it and choose accept.

Worked for me.
