I have the Virus Alert! message in my toolbar and other random places around my computer, typically where there should be an AM or PM on a time. I am pretty sure I received it after downloading a media codec last night. Thanks for any help that you all can provide.

Here is the HJT log, let me know what else I can provide:

Hi and welcome to the Daniweb forums :).

==========

Please download SmitfraudFix (by S!Ri)
Extract the content (a folder named SmitfraudFix) to your Desktop.

Open the SmitfraudFix folder and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press "Enter"; a text file will appear, which lists infected files (if present).
Please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.

Note : process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky) as a "RiskTool"; it is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert the user.

Thank you for the welcome and the help! :)

Here is the text file that I received when I ran the program:

Thanks again!

You should print out these instructions, or copy them to a Notepad file for reading while in Safe Mode, because you will not be able to connect to the Internet to read from this site.

Please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :

  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu with options should appear;
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press "Enter".
  • Choose your usual account.

Once in Safe Mode, open the SmitfraudFix folder again and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
Select option #2 - Clean by typing 2 and press "Enter" to delete infected files.

You will be prompted : "Registry cleaning - Do you want to clean the registry ?"; answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter" in order to remove the Desktop background and clean registry keys associated with the infection.

The tool will now check if wininet.dll is infected. You may be prompted to replace the infected file (if found); answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter".

The tool may need to restart your computer to finish the cleaning process; if it doesn't, please restart anyway into normal Windows. A text file will appear onscreen, with results from the cleaning process; please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply along with a new HijackThis log.
The report can also be found at the root of the system drive, usually at C:\rapport.txt

Warning : running option #2 on a non infected computer will remove your Desktop background.

Thanks for the response.

I have followed the instruations and here are the logs from both processes.

Just as an FYI, I received the following errors while running SmitFraudFix:
VacFix.exe application error
Multiple notices that Registry editing was disable by the administrator.

Not sure if this is important, but I wanted to let you know. Thanks again for the help!

Can you please do the following.

===============

Scan with HijackThis and then place a check next to all the following, if present:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Microsoft Helper Service] mshlpr.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [AlcxMonitor] ALCXMNTR.EXE
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [advap32] C:\DOCUME~1\Owner\LOCALS~1\Temp\rbnpsrv.exe/r
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [64ced7fd] rundll32.exe "C:\WINDOWS\system32\vrnkcsnw.dll",b
O4 - HKLM\..\RunServices: [Microsoft Helper Service] mshlpr.exe
O4 - Global Startup: Microsoft Broadband Networking.lnk = ?

O7 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System, DisableRegedit=1

O23 - Service: Viewpoint Manager Service - Viewpoint Corporation - C:\Program Files\Viewpoint\Common\ViewpointService.exe

Now, close all instances of Internet Explorer and any other windows you have open except HiJackThis, click "Fix checked".

===============

Locate and delete the following item(s), if present. Make sure you are able to view system and hidden files/ folders:

folders...

C:\Program Files\Viewpoint

files...

C:\DOCUME~1\Owner\LOCALS~1\Temp\rbnpsrv.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\vrnkcsnw.dll

Search for...

mshlpr.exe
ALCXMNTR.EXE

...using "Start | Search...".

-

Note that some of these file(s)/folder(s) may or may not be present. If present, and cannot be deleted because they're 'in use', try deleting them in Safe Mode by doing the following:

  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear.

Select the first option to run Windows in Safe Mode hit enter.

-

Reboot.

Currently, my computer seems to be much better. The Virus Alert! message is gone and everything seems pretty much normal. It seems to take a bit longer to boot now, but I don't have numerous popups anytime I try to move the mouse.

I did try to fix O24 like you said but it is still there after running the log.

What did renaming the executable do? I am just curious about that.

Thanks so much for all of your help. I very much appreciate it.

Renaming Hijackthis comes in handy particularly for some (Vundo) infections as they look for that file name. Unless the name is changed, you are unable to see either the 02 entries or the 020 entries.

Please back your Registry with ERUNT.
Follow the link and scroll down to ERUNT and download it.
http://aumha.org/freeware/freeware.php
For the version with the Installer:
Use the setup program to install ERUNT on your computer
For the zipped version:
Unzip all the files into a folder of your choice.
Click Erunt.exe to backup your registry to the folder of your choice.

Note: To restore your registry, go to the folder and start ERDNT.exe

If you are comfortable with tinkering with the registry, go to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Desktop\Components\0 and locate that entry and delete it.

Thanks for the info. Sometimes I like to know why something works and not just accept it for what it is.

I have backed up my registry with the program you suggested and I have also deleted that Key in the registry that you suggested.

Are there other things that I should do to proceed from here?

Download CCleaner and install, then run it. It will clear out your temp folders.

  1. Uncheck "Cookies" under "Internet Explorer".
  2. Click on Run Cleaner in the lower right-hand corner. This can take quite a while to run.
  3. Close when finished.

====

An alternative to Ccleaner is ATF Cleaner.
Download ATF (Atribune Temp File) Cleaner by Atribune to your desktop.

Double-click ATF Cleaner.exe to open it.

Under Main choose:
Windows Temp
Current User Temp
All Users Temp
Cookies
Temporary Internet Files
Prefetch
Java Cache

*The other boxes are optional*
Then click the Empty Selected button.

Firefox:
Click Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click NO at the prompt.

Opera:
Click Opera at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click NO at the prompt.

====

Use an alternative browser! Download FireFox and give it a run. It is far more secure than Internet Explorer. Or, you can get Opera, which in my opinion, is better still.

====

Use a firewall. It is an essential part of your computers security. There is a link to a good, free firewall in my signature.

====

Install and keep updated, AVG anti-spyware, Ad-Aware SE and Spybot S&D.
Run them all on a regular basis, following the maker's recommendations.

====

Install an anti-virus. There are some good, free AV's available today. Make sure that it is updated regularly and have it scan your system often.

====

Check for Windows Updates. Microsoft regularly post updates for your systems safe running. Make sure to take advantage of this. Reboot when installed and return to make sure there are no others.

=====

For XP users.
After something like this it is a good idea to Flush the Restore Points and start fresh.
To flush the XP system Restore Points.

Go to Start | Run and type msconfig and press enter.

When msconfig opens, click the Launch System Restore Button.
On the next page, click the System Restore Settings link on the left.

Check the box labelled 'Turn off System restore'.

Reboot. Go back in and Turn System Restore Back on. A new Restore Point will be created.

Note that all previous restore points will be lost.

If you have any more problems, post back.

Happy surfing,

crunchie.

Thanks so much for all of the help. Everything seemed to work fine and I am currently working on downloading the recommended software.

I did have one question though. Should I keep the Malware, HJT, and other programs that you had me download or should I remove those from my hard drive? Thanks for answering.

You can uninstall any and all of them if you wish. Personally I would keep them, especially if there were a chance I would get reinfected :).

Ok, thanks. I really appreciate your help. I will keep them in a folder on my computer, just in case it happens again. :)

No worries :)
