Last week I got a virus that changed my background to something that said "found virus, downloaded antivirus xp 2008. I ran Mcafee a couple of times and removed a bunch of trojans. One thing I noticed while waiting was when the screen saver usually came on it was instead the blue screen of death, but when I hit a key it went back to my desktop. The options where I would change my desktop and screen saver are completely gone, I kept running virus scans and the blue screen stopped popping up. I've been searching and it seems this place can help me clean up my infected files. Attached is my hijackthis log. Thanks for taking the time to help me.

Hey, newbie providing help, this probably isn't the format but I just experienced this problem.

run -> REGEDIT

navigate to:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies

There should be two entries each with the value of "1." Set to "0."

We ALWAYS recommend AGAINST playing with the registry unless you REALLY, REALLY know what you are doing and that you begin by following the steps HERE
Your log shows evidence of a trojan of the zlob family. This is one reason a Regedit is NOT the way to go at this time. This wouldn't remove a trojan.
Follow all the steps in that sticky, WITH THE EXCEPTION of the Deckard Scanner instructions. For now that program is not available. Do the other steps recommended and be absolutely certain if the instructions say to use to program to FIX items found then please do so.
Follow all those instructions, except of course those having to do with DSS and then run a new scan with HJT. Post back here with all the logs requested in the sticky and we will go from there.
Judy

I followed everything on the list. I first run Malwarebytes and it found 16 infections. I clean with ATF cleaner, Windows Malicious Software was clean, ESET was clean. Attach is the infected malwarebytes and a new hijackthis log, is there anything else I need to do? Thank your help, Judy.

Are things running ok now? Looks pretty good. You do have some unnecessary start ups but those are up to you. You do need to update your Java as the newest version is version 6 update 7.
Go HERE to download latest version, choose Offline install and save it to the desktop. Once you have downloaded that then go to Add/Remove and Uninstall all older versions shown. Once those are uninstalled then go to the Java install program on the desktop and double click to install. Follow any prompts given. Once the install is complete then go back to the original link and click Verify on the right hand side of the page and make sure the install went correctly.
Judy

Ok, the new Java is installed and the computer seems to be back to normal. Thank you so much. How do I change the start-up programs to start just the minimum?

Give me a bit and I will give you a list and a recommendation for a FREE program to use to control these.

Give me a bit and I will give you a list and a recommendation for a FREE program to use to control these.

Ok, here you go. First thing you need to download the FREE program CodeStuff Starter
and install the program. This is a very easy way to control auto-starts both in the Start Menu and Services. Much better than using msconfig which should be used basically as a troubleshooting tool and not a permanent start control program.

Once you have installed the program, open it. You will see three tabs...Startups (these are the programs which load via the Startup menu, Processes (these are the processes running on the computer, much like your Task Manager would show you however you can double click on each process and it will show you what OTHER processes or programs are connected to this particular running process, the last Tab are Services. Services are programs that are loaded automatically by Windows on startup.

Open the Startups Tab. These listed below can be stopped from running automatically at start up by removing the checkmark next to each. None of these programs are required for the running of the computer;

NvCplDaemon...System Tray icon used to change display settings, change the clock rate and memory speed for nVidia based graphics cards. This is unnecessary since you can easily configure these settings the way you want them in the Display Properties and not have to mess with them again. Also disable the "NVIDIA Driver Helper Service" if enabled as it can cause this entry to be re-enabled on re-boot (note that this service can also cause extreme shutdown delays if enabled

nwiz...Associated with the newer versions of nVidia graphics cards drivers. Allows you to immensely improve desktop layouts by setting preferences and optimizations. However, this isn't necessary for the operation of your system

LtMoh...Modem On Hold utility - manages incoming/outgoing voice calls on a single phone line while being connected to the internet. If you are on dial-up then this would be user choice so that you can receive phone calls while online. If you are NOT on dial-up this would be unnecessary.

CPLBTS88 (EzButton)...EZbutton is a quick launcher for the Media player app that comes with certain laptops.

CeEKEY...It is for Toshiba laptops and enables the use of some of the special Fn keyboard keys, such as speaker on/off, hybernate, powermanagement, etc. If not running, those keys do not function. But the utility may be manually started at any time from Start Menu/Toshiba/E-Key...User's Choice

CeEPOWER...Toshiba's Power Management Utility - allows the user to setup different profiles for both AC power and Battery Power on laptops. Contols CPU speed, Monitor Shut Off, Hard Drive Shut-Off, Monitor Brightness, System Stand-by and System Hibernate times...again User's Choice

TPNF...Touchpad configuration tray icon for Toshiba laptops. Available via Start -> Settings -> Control Panel

Pinger...Pinger is the resident program for Toshiba updates. Periodically checks to see if there are any software/driver upgrades for your particular computer. If it finds any, it posts a notification. Can be done manually.

SunJavaUpdateSched
...Checks with Sun's Java updates site to see if newer Java versions are available.Do this manually.

NeroFilterCheck...Associated with "Nero Burning Rom" CD writing software. Checks for driver issues, not required.

Google Desktop Search...Google Desktop Search - "a desktop search application that provides full text search over your email, computer files, chats, and the web pages you've viewed.

TkBellExe...Application Scheduler installed along with RealOne Player. Once installed, it runs independently of RealOne Player. Not required

Adobe Reader Speed Launcher...supposedly speeds opening of Adobe Reader. Program opens just fine without this enabled

MSMSGS...Windows Messenger utility. If you don\'t use Windows Messenger, this can be annoying. Available via Start -> Programs. Go to Windows Messenger > Tools > Options > Preferences and uncheck "Run this program when Windows starts" This is NOT an IM program.

Veoh...Related to Veoh_Networks Veoh lets you share your video with Internet users.

Creating Keepsakes Scrapbook Designer Event Reminder...What it says it is, just a reminder. Doesn't affect the running of the program if this is turned off.

Google Updater...updater alert. Not required.

Microsoft Office...Supposedly will speed opening of various Office programs. Unnecessary and very easy to open each manually when needed.

QLINK....I have no idea what this is, do you?

Next click on the Services Tab
You can remove the checkmarks from the following;

Google Desktop Search...Google Desktop Search - "a desktop search application that provides full text search over your email, computer files, chats, and the web pages you've viewed.

Google Updater Service
...can be done manually

Once you have removed the checkmarks then close the program. Reboot the computer.

just uncheck the 04's releated to each program, in hijackthis to disable them at start up .no need for another program

When learning how to read and interpret HJT logs I was taught never to consider HiJackThis a fixer program but basically a scanner program and that it should not be used as a program to stop auto starts. This is why I always recommend using either Codestuff Starter or another good program, Mike Lin's Startup Control Panel. Hence, my recommendations in my above post.
If daniweb Admins prefer that I no longer make these recommendations to use these programs and prefer that HJT be used for this then I will no longer make start up program recommendations. I did not know that these programs were not allowed here.

no,im sure they are allowed here , i never said not to offer it or for someone not to use it .,just said there was no need for another program ,im sure its a great program ,i downloaded it and will give it a try ,When i was learning how to use hijack a few years ago ,i was never told not to use it to stop programs ,encouraged to use i think if my memory serves me right,i actually use it all the time for that reason on my computer and never encountered a problem for a few years now !! so do keep doing what you are doing ,thank you !

This is solid advice and probably the easiest way to manage unwanted startups without manually hacking the registry.
My first approach would be to uninstall any unwanted programs. Then, use HJT to adjust the registry for remaining startups as needed.

The programs Judy mentions have an advantage in that it is easier to re-enable startups. Some people have trouble navigating HJT or delete the backups (especially if HJT is run improperly).

Judy is correct that HJT is not a "fixer" program with regard to malware.
I think she might have been thinking of the people who use Diagnostic Startup via msconfig to disable unwanted startups - definitely NOT a good idea.

PP :)
