Hello All:

Yesterday, I believe, some malware/spyware somehow got into my computer. Windows keeps poping up some messages in ballons showing warnings that "windows has detected spyware" on my system. My desktop wallpaper also changed automatically displaying similar messages.

I realized that these messages are not genuine windows messages so rebooted in safe mode and did the following:
1. Downloaded Spybot and ran it. It found several infections and removed most of them. It couldn't remove a few and said that it will do so on restart. I did that and it could again remove a few of the remaining ones. This took me about half a day to do as the scans took a long time.
2. Then I went to trendmicor.com and ran the free scan. It just showed me that there are some vulnerabilities. But no infections.
3. After restarting, the same problem warnings poped up again. So I ran Ad-aware 2008 and it found some problems and cleaned them.
4. I restarted my system, however, something doesn't seem right. My internet stops working after a 5 mins of use. I have to repair my wireless connection in order to stay connected. Also, occasionally, my IE explorer gives a message that "spyware has been detected. Cannot continue".

I ran HijackThis: here is the report: I will really appreciate if an expert can help me with this issue. Thanks in advance.

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware (MBA-M) to your Desktop.

* DoubleClick mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install MBA-M.
* Be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
* If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
* Once the program has loaded, select Perform full scan, then click Scan.
* When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
* Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
* When MBA-M finishes, Notepad will open with the log. Please save it where you can find it easily. The log can also be opened by going to Start > All Programs > Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware > Logs > log-date.txt.

Be sure to reboot the computer and when it reboots run a new HJT scan and save the log.
Then post back here with those two logs.

Thanks for your prompt response. I am posting after so long because the scan took a long time. Here are the log files:

I forgot to post this: After the system restarted, I got this error message:

c:\WINDOWS\system32\atdkfvqterpgarkc.dll
The specified module could not be found

Don't worry about that missing module message right now. It is part of the infection you have. Probably has been removed by your Spybot scan but the auto start listing is still there. These next steps should also remove that.

Re-run that Malwarebytes program and this time have it fix everything found. Save that log also.

Reboot the system.

Next run HJT again and place a checkmark next to the following entries if they still exist.

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {6958F783-2FD3-4C77-9227-C1217E756021} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\awtsp.dll (file missing)

O4 - Global Startup: QuickBooks Update Agent.lnk = C:\Program Files\Common Files\Intuit\QuickBooks\QBUpdate\qbupdate.exe

O15 - Trusted Zone: *.drivecleaner.com (HKLM)
O15 - Trusted Zone: *.errorprotector.com (HKLM)
O15 - Trusted Zone: *.systemdoctor.com (HKLM)

Once you have placed the checkmarks then click the Fix Checked Button
Exit HJT.

Reboot.

Next you need to update your Java program as yours is way out of date. First go HERE to download the newest version. Choose the Offline Install and save it to the desktop.
Once that has downloaded then close all browsers. Go to Start, Control Panel, Add/Remove and uninstall ALL old versions of java that you find there. Once those are uninstalled then go to that Java Icon on the desktop and double click to install the new version. Once it is installed then go back to that download page and on the right side you will see Verify Now. Click that to verify the install has worked properly.
Next run a new HJT scan and save that log. Post back here with the Malwarebytes log and this new HJT log.

I followed all your instructions. Actually I realized that I had posted the wrong log file for Malwarebytes in the first post. I ran the program and saved the log file. Then I clicked "remove all".and didn't save the log file. After reading your second post, I will ran it again to make sure it had removed eveything but forgot to save the log file. I have followed all other steps properly. I will post the Hijackthis log and will post the Malwarebytes log as soon as i will get it. Upon reboot, I didn't get that message anymore.

forgot to save the log file

Go into the Malwarebytes program There is a Tab which says Logs. The past logs can be found there. I would like to see that log where all items were fixed or removed if possible.
This latest HJT log doesn't show that all fixes I recommended have been applied, the following still remain;

O2 - BHO: bannerstyles15 browser enhancer - {ec61d085-0ba9-a2bc-dd5b-927171f5f977} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\atdkfvqterpgarkc.dll (file missing)

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [TkBellExe] "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Real\Update_OB\realsched.exe" -osboot

And you also can fix this entry which automatically comes in when you update the java programs, it is not needed and can be done manually

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SunJavaUpdateSched] "C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.6.0_07\bin\jusched.exe"

I note also that you are running AVG 7.5 for antivirus, which is fine but this WILL no longer be available after December and I would recommend either updating to AVG 8 or choosing another antivirus program A couple other good FREE ones are;
Antivir, and Avast

Another must have program, also FREE, and is a wonderful program to protect your computer is SpywareBlaster. It works great and DOES NOT run in the background.

Thanks for pointing me to the saved log files. Here are the log files from Malwarebytes. I am posting the one that cleaned all infections and the one which I ran afterwards. They are posted in this order:

I will update AVG to version 8.00 as soon as this issue is resolved completely. I will also install SpywareBlaster.

I have a few questions (off topic). I will apreciate if you can answer them:

1. Is AVG 8.0 enough? What else can I install to make sure this kind of thing doesn't happen?
2. I installed win xp SP3: I don't exactly remember how much space I had before that but now I see very less space. How much space does SP3 approximately take? Do I really need SP3?

Thanks a lot for your help and time. Thanks again.

I will answer your questions before we have finished.

You need to download and run one more tool.
Download Combofix
Click on the Save button and then when it asks you where to save it, make sure you save it directly to your Windows Desktop.
Close all open Windows including this one.
Close or disable all running Antivirus, Antispyware, and Firewall programs as they may interfere with the proper running of ComboFix.
Double-click on the ComboFix icon found on your desktop. Please note, that once you start ComboFix you should not click anywhere on the ComboFix window as it can cause the program to stall. In fact, when ComboFix is running, do not touch your computer at all and just take a break as it may take a while for it to complete. You may get a warning asking whether you wish to run the program or not. Windows is issuing this prompt because ComboFix does not have a digital signature. This is perfectly normal and safe and you can click on the Run button to continue.
ComboFix will to run and when it has finished you will see the Disclaimer screen you should press the number 1 key and then press the enter key to continue. then ComboFix will create a System Restore point so that if any problems occur while using the program you can restore back to your previous configuration. When ComboFix has finished creating the restore point, it will then backup your Windows Registry.
Once the Windows Registry has finished being backed up, ComboFix will disconnect your computer from the Internet. Therefore, do not be surprised or concerned if you receive any warnings stating that you are no longer on the Internet as your connection will be completely restored at a later stage in the program.

ComboFix will now start scanning your computer for known infections. This procedure can take some time, so please be patient.
While the program is scanning your computer, it will change your clock format, so do not be concerned when you see this happen. When ComboFix is finished it will restore your clock settings to what they were previously. You will also see the text in the ComboFix window being updated as it goes through the various stages of its scan.
When ComboFix has finished running, you will see a screen stating that it is preparing the log report.
This can take a while, so please be patient. If you see your Windows desktop disappear, do not worry. This is normal and ComboFix will restore your desktop before it is finished. Eventually you will see a new screen that states the program is almost finished and telling you the programs log file, or report, will be located at C:\ComboFix.txt.
When ComboFix has finished, it will automatically close the program and change your clock back to its original format. It will then display the log file automatically for you.
You will need to post that full log back here.
NOTE* While combofix is doing it's scanning it is very important that you NOT TOUCH the computer as this can interfere with the scan.

Here is the Combofix log:

Looks like combofix found the remaining problems. Couple of more suggestions;
I note in your newest HJT logs that sometime, between the first and second run of HJT you installed Windows Defender. While this is a good program you should have told me you had installed it because suddenly an unknown file showed up in the log and I had no idea what it was, so be sure to keep people informed of exactly what you have on the computer.

Frankly, I would disable the AdAware2007 Service so that it doesn't run all the time in the background. Continue to use it for scanning and cleaning if you wish but take it out of the continually running programs.

The programs I use to keep my computer safe are Antivir antivirus, SpywareBlaster, Spybot S & D, my built in Windows Firewall...you can use that or any of those listed here
I use Malwarebytes for weekly scanning as well as Spybot. I scan weekly with my antivirus program. I use Firefox browser as my default browser and use it 95% of the time. I only use Internet Explorer when a website requires it for updates. That is it.

I also follow this advice to the letter:
Keep Security Patches up to date
Download programs only from Web sites you trust.
Beware the fine print: Read all security warnings, license agreements, privacy statements, and “opt-in” notices with any software you download.
Don’t be tricked into clicking: You don’t have to click “OK,” “Agree,” or “Cancel” to close a window. You CAN just "X" out.
Be especially careful with certain types of “free” programs.
Absolutely NO P2P File sharing...as with the certain types of “free” programs, you may get a whole lot more than you bargained for.

Now for SP3...do you absolutely need it? I "think" this may still be up for debate.

The primary function of SP3 is to apply all of the previously released XP updates. If you have been diligently installing all these updates individually, you could forego SP3 without any dire consequences. If you're installing XP on a computer from scratch, installing it with integrated SP3 not only gives you a way to apply all those updates in one fell swoop, it also makes a change to Windows Product Activation that allows you to skip entering the product key during the setup process (you're prompted to enter it later, as with Vista installation).

Bottom line: best practice is to install all critical updates and service packs (and some corporate networks won't allow your system to connect if it's not up to date). However, XP SP3 doesn't include much for the typical home user that you need or haven't already gotten by keeping your system updated - and in fact, it takes some things away (such as the ability to enable the address bar on the taskbar).

BUT... Sometime we will be told you cannot install updates because they are only relative to SP3 so sooner or later everyone will need it I imagine.
The choice is yours of course.
When you say you have less space since installing SP3, when did you install it? I don't think it should take up a huge amount of space...take a look at other things you have installed SINCE then.
How big is your hard drive and how much space is used and remaining?

Thanks for your detailed answer. I am at work and don't have my laptop with me. I will post my reply later today. Sorry about not telling you about Windows Defender.

No problem. Will be watching for your next post.
The reason it isn't recommended to install something unless told to do so is that some programs, no matter how good, can interfere with fixes being done, they will stop registry changes for instance, which programs like mbam and combofix sometimes need to do in order to do repairs. This isn't just a caution to you but to anyone dealing with the removal of some sort of infection on the computer. When working with a helper on any forum like this one it is vital to do only what is asked. This didn't appear to cause a problem so "no harm/no foul" but it was a surprise for me to suddenly see this appear in your logs.
