Hi
I have studied carefully a closely related thread posted 24 days ago by redrevis and answered by jholland, but cant quite seem to kill my dnschanger.
like redrevis, I have two laptops connecting to the internet through a wireless router... a dlink 640. the one running xp is infected and the vista machine is clean according to malwarebytes and AVG and windows defender.
I have reset and changed the passwords on the router, and have not used it with the inected machine since.
I cant quite work out which lines of code to kill in the HJT log... because I have no idea basically. Each time I select the 18 instances of the trojan in mbytes and reboot they promptly reappear in the next quick scan.
very grateful for assistance, here is HJT log;

Hi and welcome to the Daniweb forums :).

==========

First of all you need to update hijackthis to version 2.0.2. Download HijackThis from here. Download it to your desktop and NOT a temporary folder.

====

Download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware (http://www.majorgeeks.com/Malwarebytes_Anti-Malware_d5756.html) to your desktop.

* Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
* At the end, be sure to checkmark the Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
* If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
* Once the program has loaded, select Perform full scan, then click Scan.
* When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
* Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
* When completed, a log will open in Notepad.
* Post the log back here.

Make sure that you restart the computer.

The log can also be found here:
C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\log-date.txt
Or at C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\log-date.txt

Looks clean. How are things now?

yes much better :) thank you. I admit i am a bit scared to let it onto my network (I used an unsecured WAN to update). After all, McAfee only alerted me to the fact it had downloaded (which was immediate). Spybot hadn't done anything! Very impressed with mbam. thoughts?

Thoughts....McAfee is almost as bad as Norton.

Spybot S&D is dated.

Unsecured WAN........tut tut.

MBAM = one of the best freebies out there :).

well i was thinking of purchasing mbam (for the realtime)...?... but maybe a different AV do you think?

I would personally go with another AV and use an alternative browser such as Opera.

For AV i would recommend Avast.

For another Internet Browser i would recommend Firefox.

Don't purchase MBA-M, it is a great free piece of software.

At Least the problem is solved. If you have any future problems, create a new thread with the appropriate logs.

Thanks,

Cohen
