Hello, I'm new to the "Google it and just do it yourself" when it comes to computer fixes, so I've been trying to resolve my TDSS Trojan problem with Trend Micro Support for 2 days now and I'm getting nowhere in removing these things. DaniWeb seems to know what's going on, so I want to try to solve my problem here. Here's the skinny so far:

I use Trend Micro PC-cillin 2007 and it detected the following:
TROJ_TDSS.DB, unable to quarantine, C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\UACqoiquwbp.sys
TROJ_TDSS.FA, Unable to quarantine, C:\WINDOWS\system32\UACauoyiduy.dll
TROJ_TDSS.FB, Unable to quarantine, C:\WINDOWS\system32\UACavsdrnfk.dll
TROJ_TDSS.FC, Unable to quarantine, C:\WINDOWS\system32\UACjnmsfotv.dll

We've looked thru the system32 folder with hidden files and folders showing and without hiding protected operating system files. These files are not visibly there, they just aren't in the folder(s) that I can see.

I've run the Trend System Clean program they gave me and it didn't help. I've run their 2-part TM Remover and TM Washer. I've run Disk Cleanup. All of these in Normal AND Safe Modes!
I've generated logs for them and they've looked over them and tell me it will be 2 more days before a higher level rep can get back to me. Can someone help me beat this response time?

I've run a HiJackThis log for them and can provide one here too at the end of this post.
I also downloaded Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware but cannot get it to run. I renamed the .exe file and then saved it to my desktop (I'm downloading everything on my laptop, saving the programs to a memory stick, and putting them on the infected computer's desktop and then running them from there, because I want to stay off the internet while infected as much as possible) and the MBAM program installed but will not update or launch.
I checked the Non-Plug and Play Drivers for a TDSS one too and there is nothing there.
I also ran the Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool, but I'm not sure it DID anything....

I'm not really sure what else to do right now, since I can't generate the MBAM logs or even get the program to run, for that matter. What should I do next?

Here's my current HJT log:

Hi and welcome to the Daniweb forums :).

==========

Uninstall mbam fom your pc. Go back to download it again and when you get the popup window asking you where you want to save it, rename the application before actually downloading it.

Install it and run as per the following instructions;

* Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
* At the end, be sure to checkmark the Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
* If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
* Once the program has loaded, select Perform full scan, then click Scan.
* When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
* Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
* When completed, a log will open in Notepad.
* Post the log back here.

Make sure that you restart the computer.

The log can also be found here:
C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\log-date.txt
Or at C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\log-date.txt

Post new HJT log.

Crunchie, thx for the quick response.
I d/l'ed the mbam again to my memory stick and renamed it roobyroo.exe and saved it to said stick and then moved it to my desktop PC's desktop. Again, it installed, but it won't run.

I attempted to connect to the internet from the infected and it's trying to send me to stableclick.com... I stopped it and tried to get the cnet mbam d/l and go straight to my infected PC, but Firefox froze on me.

Please download ComboFix by sUBs from HERE or HERE

  • You must download it to and run it from your Desktop
  • Physically disconnect from the internet.
  • Now STOP all your monitoring programs (Antivirus/Antispyware, Guards and Shields) as they could easily interfere with ComboFix.
  • Double click combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • When finished, it will produce a log. Please save that log to post in your next reply along with a fresh HJT log
  • Re-enable all the programs that were disabled during the running of ComboFix..

Note:
Do not mouse-click combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

CF disconnects your machine from the internet. The connection is automatically restored before CF completes its run. If CF runs into difficulty and terminates prematurely, the connection can be manually restored by restarting your machine.

Run Combofix ONCE only!!

Grrrrrr.... :@

My Firefox browser will NOT connect to either address from the infected PC. Should I try downloading to my laptop and transfer it to the PC on the memory stick?

Yes

Ok, ComboFix.exe would not run. I downloaded the file AGAIN and this time named it JumbloMixer.exe and started running it in Safe Mode. It's running now, but says "CombFix has detected that this machine does not have the 'WINDOWS RECOVERY CONSOLE'. It would be in your BEST INTEREST to have it installed. Would you like to do so now? *Note*- This requires an active internet connection."

#1, I'm in Safe Mode with no networking
#2, the instructions for running ComboFix say to disconnect from the internet

So I'm torn on what to do... just hit "NO" and continue running it?
Sorry for being such a n00b.

PS - I do have System Restore on the computer, but I know the virus had disabled my starting points I had previously created. The info in the ComboFix window says it's attempting to create new System Restore point, and that's where I get the Windows Recovery Console alert I typed above.

Hi.

I had the exact same problems that you are having and I have good news for you. I installed a program called Trojan Remover and it got rid of the nasty TDSS trojan. After I ran this tool I was able to run both the ComboFix and the Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware tool.

I hope this does the trick for you as well.

Good luck.

Jarle

Thanks Jarle,
I finally got the gnards to push the "No" button and ComboFix ran and found 9 problems in the Rootkit and had to restart the machine. I let it reboot in Normal Mode and now ComboFix is running again and I'm back to the "WINDOWS RECOVERY CONSOLE" question again that ComboFix is asking me about. Since this is the 2nd time ComboFix has asked me about getting the RECOVERY CONSOLE I'm hesitant to push that "No" button again!

I have LOADS of my personal music recordings on here and although I have a backup drive that I've disconnected and it should have all that on there, I'm still hesitant cuz I don't want to screw up my machine. Yeah, I'm scared of doing the wrong thing! Sue me! LOL!

So, Crunchie, when you get back on out there, should I connect to the internet and download the Windows Recovery Console as ComboFix suggests or just push "No" again and plod on and hopefully get that log for you?

Jarle, I REALLY appreciate the added info and that's on standby pending what happens with this ComboFix situation.
Anyone reading these threads, you should always try and download these fixes and save them under a different name... these Trojans are catching on to these fixes!

At present I just want you to follow the instructions and run combofix ONCE only and post the logs requested.
You do not have to install the recovery console. It's there just in case your system goes south :).

Avast! Success on the ComboFix! Here is the resulting ComboFix log, followed by a new HJT log:

3. Save the above as CFScript.txt

4. Physically disconnect from the internet.

5. Now STOP all your monitoring programs (Antivirus/Antispyware, Guards and Shields) as they could easily interfere with ComboFix.

6. Then drag the CFScript.txt into ComboFix.exe as depicted in the animation below. This will start ComboFix again.

7. After reboot, (in case it asks to reboot), please post the following reports/logs into your next replyafter youre-enable all the programs that were disabled during the running of ComboFix:Combofix.txt
A new HijackThis log.
Please take note:

CF disconnects your machine from the internet. The connection is automatically restored before CF completes its run. If CF runs into difficulty and terminates prematurely, the connection can be manually restored by restarting your machine.

Let's get rid of that file then.

1. Please open Notepad Click Start , then Run
Type notepad.exe in the Run Box.
2. Now copy/paste the entire content of the codebox below into the Notepad window:

KillAll::

File::
c:\windows\system32\opnMcDst.dll

Note: the above code was created specifically for this user. If you are not this user, do NOT follow these directions as they could damage the workings of your system.

Alright, that's done now too :)

Can you please do the following.

===============

Go to Add/Remove programs and uninstall the following, if present:

Viewpoint Manager,Viewpoint Media Player,Viewpoint Toolbar

The above could appear anywhere within the entry. Be careful not to remove any personal or system software.

===============

Scan with HijackThis and then place a check next to all the following, if present:

O23 - Service: Viewpoint Manager Service - Unknown owner - C:\Program Files\Viewpoint\Common\ViewpointService.exe

Now, close all instances of Internet Explorer and any other windows you have open except HiJackThis, click "Fix checked".

===============

Locate and delete the following item(s), if present. Make sure you are able to view system and hidden files/ folders:

folders...

C:\Program Files\Viewpoint

-

Note that some of these file(s)/folder(s) may or may not be present. If present, and cannot be deleted because they're 'in use', try deleting them in Safe Mode by doing the following:

  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear.

Select the first option to run Windows in Safe Mode hit enter.

-

Reboot.

===============

After rebooting, rescan with hijackthis and post back a new log. Please let me know how your pc is now.

Ok,
I had previously "deleted" Viewpoint Media Player from Add/Remove Programs, so that wasn't there... but I did find the Viewpoint folder in c:\programs and deleted the folder.

I ran the HJT and checked the O23 with the Viewpoint file and ran the fix, then rebooted into Safe Mode and ran HJT while still in Safe Mode and here's the log:

Should I restart again in Normal Mode and rescan with my Trend Antivirus?
I cannot WAIT for them to call me in tomorrow for my "escalated issue" and I can tell them Crunchie solved it, ppppbbbbbfffffttttt!!!

FYI, Crunchie, I went ahead and restarted to Normal, reconnected to the internet, and updated and ran my Trend Micro PC-cillin on the problem system32 folder and NO viruses were found!!

I also connected to the internet and went straight to trendmicro.com with no problem and download.com with no problem.

Does this mean Problem Solved?? Does this mean I kiss your cyber-toes?

Kiss away :D.

Congratulations! Your log looks clean.

===============

Now that your PC is clean you need to follow these easy steps to keeping it this way:

Download CCleaner and install, then run it. It will clear out your temp folders.

  1. Uncheck "Cookies" under "Internet Explorer".
  2. Click on Run Cleaner in the lower right-hand corner. This can take quite a while to run.
  3. Close when finished.

====

An alternative to Ccleaner is ATF Cleaner.
Download ATF (Atribune Temp File) Cleaner by Atribune to your desktop.

Double-click ATF Cleaner.exe to open it.

Under Main choose:
Windows Temp
Current User Temp
All Users Temp
Cookies
Temporary Internet Files
Prefetch
Java Cache

*The other boxes are optional*
Then click the Empty Selected button.

Firefox:
Click Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click NO at the prompt.

Opera:
Click Opera at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click NO at the prompt.

====

Use an alternative browser! Download FireFox and give it a run. It is far more secure than Internet Explorer. Or, you can get Opera, which in my opinion, is better still.

====

Use a firewall. It is an essential part of your computers security. There is a link to a good, free firewall in my signature.

====

Install and keep updated,
Spybot S&D.
Run it on a regular basis, following the maker's recommendations.

====

Install an anti-virus. There are some good, free AV's available today. Make sure that it is updated regularly and have it scan your system often.

====

Check for Windows Updates. Microsoft regularly post updates for your systems safe running. Make sure to take advantage of this. Reboot when installed and return to make sure there are no others.

=====

For XP users.
After something like this it is a good idea to Flush the Restore Points and start fresh.
To flush the XP system Restore Points.

Go to Start | Run and type msconfig and press enter.

When msconfig opens, click the Launch System Restore Button.
On the next page, click the System Restore Settings link on the left.

Check the box labelled 'Turn off System restore'.

Reboot. Go back in and Turn System Restore Back on. A new Restore Point will be created.

Note that all previous restore points will be lost.

Please mark this thread as solved if all is well.

If you have any more problems, post back.

Happy surfing,

crunchie.

Well, unfortunately, I'm posting back.
Here's what I did, Crunchie. Last night before your final post, I ran an entire scan of my computer with Trend Micro PC-cillin 2007 and went to bed.
This morning I see PC-cillin had detected 9 dangers, 8 of them were quarantined, 1 was unable to quarantine (sigh):

TROJ_TDSS.DB, Unable to quarantine, File Name: UACqoiquwbp.sys (located in C:\Qoobox\Quarantine\C\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\_UACqoiquwbp_.sys.zip)

The rest of the viruses that show successfully quarantined are (without the full file locations):
--- (NO file name, but indicated as a quarantined trojan?)
TROJ_VUNDO.DML (located in the C:\Qoobox\Quarantine... path like the .DB one)
TROJ_TDSS.FA (located in the C:\Qoobox path...)
TROJ_TDSS.FC (same C:\Qoobox path...)
TROJ_TDSS.FB (located in C:\System Volume Information\_restore(A9A........ etc)
TROJ_TDSS.FA (located in same as .FB above)
TROJ_TDSS.FC (located in same)
TROJ_VUNDO.DML (located in same)

I'm going to try and give you 2 screen shots as attachments here... just to show you the virus names as Trend picks up and the full location paths, so you can see what I see. I'll be happy to run another log for you if you need it.....

This is NOT what I expected this morning! ACCCCCKKKK!!!

Crunchie, I have NOT done the things in your last response yet because I ran the Trend Scan and went to bed. I'm holding off on doing anything now until you see this and tell me how to proceed. Sorry to be such a pain.

Hi, If you had run the steps posted by Crunchie BEFORE running the TrendMicro scan then most of those things would not have been found.

Most of them were found in System Restore, they won't hurt things from there usually but if you note above one of the things he asked you to do was set a new restore point. That would have removed those so they wouldn't have been there for this scan.

Don't do it yet. Do the steps below first, then do all the steps Crunchie gave you above and the last one is resetting System Restore.

The other items found were in the Combofix Quarantine file.
Uninstall Combofix to get rid of these. I don't see that he asked you to remove it so he probably just forgot it. They were/are in quarantine there so they cannot infect the computer again but you also don't need combofix anymore so it should be removed. If it is ever needed then the helper will tell you and you would download a new copy.

Here is how you should uninstall combofix;
* Click START then RUN
* Now type Combofix /u in the runbox and click OK. The space between the combofix and the /u, it must be there.
When shown the disclaimer, Select "2"
Now also empty the quarantine of the TrendMicro program.
Then begin with Crunchie's steps in his last post above.
The computer isn't considered clean until those final steps are complete. THEN is when the TrendMicro program can be run again to see if anything else shows up....NOT BEFORE.
Judy

Thx, Judy, I'll get on it and report what happens later once I'm done!

Thanks Judy. I forgot the combofix uninstall instructions.

Thank you, Judy and Crunchie!
Ok, the ONLY thing that did not happen was an option to select a #2 as were in Judy's instructions for the uninstall of ComboFix.
I didn't notice that my Trend Micro Anti-Virus was on when I was uninstalling, and the Trend pop-up that changes were being made to the computer popped up AND ComboFix popped up and said, "HEY! TURN OFF YOU ANTIVIRUS YOU DIMWIT!!" So, I told it to allow the changes and turned of the antivirus, then the ComboFix finished it's deal.

I then ran CCleaner (thankfully I had already used Windows Disk Cleaner to get rid of most of my temp files) and did the restore point exercise that Crunchie gave me, and now I'm back from the reboot and System Restore is turned back on.

I will now run my Trend Micro scan again and see where we are before I mark this as solved!

Thank you for all your help, my apologies I didn't finish this off sooner, but if I didn't spend some time with my wife I'd have been massacred!

Hope to report in about 3-4 hours when the full scan is complete!

We'll be waiting to see the report. You did great.:)

My antivirus scan is done and I'm happy to report it found NOTHING! Woo-hoo! Now I've got TWO sets of toes to kiss... you're the coolest for using your time to help me, Crunchie, I really do appreciate it! And to you as well, Judy, for filling in the gaps!

I hope this thread helps someone else out there. I've already been able to assist a friend with the same sort of problem thru what I've learned here, but of course the majority of my assistance was to point them to Daniweb!!!

Thank you thank you thank you!

P.S. The Trend Micro Level 2 Support that was supposed to call me within 48 hours for my "escalated problem" STILL hasn't called. I specifically asked if they called on the weekends too, which I was informed they DO. Guess they were on a holiday this weekend.... So thank you for MUCH better "customer service" than I got from them! Crunchie, you're a saint.

Happy to help.

You are welcome :).
