some time in the last couple of days i received the malware for hotoffer's and another one that popups as an error msg for windows that says that windows is corrupted and that i need to download some antispy program which there is no chance in hell fo me downloading from globolook. also hotoffers is constantly setting my homepage to hotoffers and can not be changed to anything else. i've tried various spyware programs including ad-ware se, spykiller 2005, xsoftspy. none have had any effect and the first two wont even run they start and then get terminated. the only way to run them is in safe mode. they all find the associated files for the malware but deleteling them using the programs has no effect same goes for manually finding and deleteing the files. Plz help its divin me insane.

here's a copy of my hijackthis log

Hi Fitzad.

===============

Download the Pocket KillBox
Unzip the file to your desktop.
Run Pocket Killbox and paste the full file path of each of the below files in the box and click on Standard File Kill and End Explorer Shell While Killing File. Click on the button with the red circle and an X in the middle after you enter each file (see the files below).

C:\WINDOWS\System32\systr.dll

Reboot afterwards if the files are successfully deleted.

If all files are not deleted, do not reboot yet. Run Pocket Killbox again and paste the full file path in the box and click on Delete on Reboot. Next click on the button with the red circle and an X in the middle. You will get a message saying "File with be deleted on next reboot, Process and Reboot now?" Click "Yes" to reboot only after the last file you enter.

===============

Let's look for, and delete, any program segments(prefetches) that might be present, and are associated with the 'problems' we're trying to remove from this system. To do this, let's:

1) Click "Start | Search", then search for each of these program's base name(s), in all files and folders:

netdb.exe*

2) Then if any are found in the 'prefetch' folder, delete them.

Look closely, since the 'base' name will have a bunch of random numbers and letters attached to it.

===============

Run HiJackThis then:

1. Click "Config..."
2. Click "Misc Tools"
3. Click "Open Process manager"

-

Next, while holding down the CTRL key, locate (if present) and click on (highlight) each of the following:

D:\Program Files\spy\System32\svchost.exe
D:\Documents and Settings\Adam\Start Menu\Programs\Startup\netdb.exe

Now double-check and make sure that only those item(s) above are highlighted, then click "Kill process". Now, click "Refresh", check again, and repeat this step if any remain.
===============

Run HiJackThis and click "Scan", then check(tick) the following, if present:

R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://www.hotoffers.info/192/

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [WinService32] D:\Program Files\spy\System32\svchost.exe
O4 - Startup: netdb.exe

Now, with all windows closed except HiJackThis, click "Fix checked".

===============

Locate and delete the following item(s), if present. Make sure your able to view system and hidden files/ folders:

folders...

D:\Program Files\spy

files...

D:\Documents and Settings\Adam\Start Menu\Programs\Startup\netdb.exe

Search for...

netdb.exe

...using "Start | Search...".

-

Note that some of these file(s) may or may not be present. If present, and cannot be deleted because they're 'in use', try deleting them from "Safe Mode".

===============

Post back a new log after rebooting and let me know how everything goes.

when doing the search and delete i take it you mean to search for the netdb.exe and delete it????? from part 2

Yes. that's right. Or, you can just clear put the entire prefetch folder.

thanx mate every thing seems to back to normal and no more annoying popups. u saved me from takin a hammer to the tower. heres a new copy of the log file. can you just check to make sure everything rite thanx

something gone wrong. last nite after i followed the steps you said it seemed like it had gone but it has returned today with both popups and the hompage being set to hotoffers. when you said to select these in hijack this
R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://www.hotoffers.info/192/ and click fix...i do that but each time i do the scan again it returns the other 2 disappeared fine. with the net.db i cant find it in the loction u specified but i think i got rid of it. also the dll systr.dll returned not in the windows folder but in a folder call !submit in d:\program files. i used kill box on this again and selected the 2 options u said aswell as delete from registery so hopefully its gone now. this is the latest copy of the log file after following your last instructions and deleting the systr.dll again. thanx heaps for this

Still got D:\WINDOWS\System32\systr.dll on board :(.

Download moveonboot from here & the file(s) you choose will be deleted on reboot.

MoveOnBoot allows you to copy, move or delete files on the next system boot. This comes in very handy, if you need to replace or delete files which are locked by other applications, loaded into memory or cannot be changed until next system boot. You could manually enter a line to the wininit files, but using MoveOnBoot is much simpler, since the program can be integrated into shell - it creates the "Copy/Move/Delete on boot" context menu item.

When done, locate D:\WINDOWS\System32\systr.dll and right click on it. Select delete file on next boot and reboot your system. Don't do a restart though. Just turn off your PC and wait for 30 seconds or so, then restart.
Run silent runners again and check for the entry D:\WINDOWS\System32\systr.dll

i download and installed the prgram, ran it on systr.dll, turned off for a few min and restarted. did the silent runners again and as you can see from the log file the entry is still there but it says it can not be found. so i guess that means its gone??????? :p my homepage seems to be staying as the one i set but ain't gettin my hopes up just yet i'll and if nuttin happins i'll be happy. thanx heps mate. if there anthing else that might need to do i would be most gratful if ya posted it. thanx again

Congratulations! Your log looks clean - good work!

===============

It's probably a good idea to defragment your hard drive too. This may well improve the performance of your PC.

===============

Download, install and run Cleanup! from Steven Gould, then:

1. Click "Cleanup!"

(wait for the program to finish scanning your system, and selecting files to be removed.)

2. Exit the program and reboot the computer, if necessary.

-

For more information about using Cleanup! see here.

===============

If everything is running ok, let's do the final cleanup...

===============

1. Run "Disk Cleanup" and allow it to remove everything it finds.

2. Go to www.trendmicro.com and click "Free Online Scan", then "Scan now, it's free!". When it's downloaded, select all available drives, then check(tick) "Auto clean", then click "Scan".

3. Run AdAware SE Personal and "perform a full system scan", then Spybot S&D, and "Check for Problems". Let them both remove the residual 'problems' left that HiJackThis couldn't fix.

4. Disable, then re-enable system restore; with a reboot in-between. Then immediately create a new system point manually.

===============

If you have any more problems, post back.
