Hi everyone,

About two weeks ago I noticed a pop-up from my Norton Firewall saying it had blocked the NetBus Trojan. Oh that's good I thought, except now this happens every 30 mins when I am online, there doesn't seem to be any harm done but it's very annoying.

Any ideas why this has started happening, it never happened before?? :?:

Is there anything I can do about it, is it a threat?

I run Mozilla Firefox with Norton Antivirus & Norton Internet Security Firewall
also Spybot, Adaware and spywareblaster frequently.

Thanks guys....

Please do this.
Download 'Hijack This!'. hijackthis
Save it in a convenient permanent folder such as C:\HJT\, double click HijackThis.exe, and hit "Scan".

Your copy of HijackThis needs to be in a folder of it's own. When HJT fixes anything, it makes backups of the original files in the folder it is in. Since Temporary folders are emptied now and then (the files are DELETED), it would not be a good idea to have your backups there. Those backups would be VITAL to restoring your system if something went wrong in the FIX process!

1. Please go to you're 'My Documents' folder, right-click and select 'New > Folder' then name the folder 'HJT'.

2. Copy and paste HijackThis.exe to the new folder.

3. Close ALL windows except HJT

4. SCAN with HJT

5. POST the new log in this thread using ' Reply'

DO NOT MAKE ANY CHANGES OR CLICK "FIX CHECKED" UNTIL WE CHECK THE LOG, AS SOME OF THE FILES ARE LEGIT AND VITAL TO YOUR COMPUTER'S HEALTH

Variants of the NetBus trojan have been around since about 1988; I'm surprised your Norton anti-virus hasn't been able to clean it. Do you have the latest virus definition updates installed?

The Netbus trojans are of the type that allow others to remotely control your computer, so yes- I'd say that constitutes a threat. Norton's firewall may be blocking its communication, but the beast is still active, and that's a Bad Thing.

1. Install the most current updates for Norton and run a full virus scan if you haven't done so already. If you have run a scan but Norton was unable to clean the infection, give us the details from Norton's report/log file.

2. Here are some free online scans that you can perform; I'd suggest doing at least two of them:

http://www.kaspersky.com/scanforvirus.html
http://housecall.trendmicro.com/
http://www.pandasoftware.com/activescan/com/activescan_principal.htm
http://www.ravantivirus.com/scan/
http://us.mcafee.com/root/mfs/default.asp?cid=9913
http://www.bitdefender.com/scan/licence.php

3. If none of the above solutions work:

Download HijackThis:

http://www.majorgeeks.com/download3155.html

Once downloaded, follow these instructions to install and run the program:

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Create a folder outside of any Temp/Temporary folders for HJT and move it there now. A folder such such as C:\HijackThis or C:\Spyware Tools\HijackThis will do.

One of the normal steps in eliminating malicious programs is to entirely delete the contents of all Temp folders. Given that, if HijackThis (and other data that you care about) is living in those Temp folders, it will be erased along with everything else!
Temp/Temporary folders are just that- Temporary. They are not meant for permanent storage, as their contents are often delete in the course of troubleshooting, by running disk clean-up utilities, etc.

Run HijackThis, but do not have HJT fix anything yet; only have it scan your system! Once the scan is complete, the "Scan" button will turn into an option to "Save log...". Save the log in the folder you created for HiajckThis, open the log in Windows Notepad, and cut-n-paste the entire contents of the log here. The log contents will tell us a lot about what "nasties" have crept into your system, and once we analyse the log we can tell you what to do from there.

ok, here's the log, Norton doesn't pick anything up. Also, this is an incoming attack, not from my computer, I don't think!

Logfile of HijackThis v1.97.7

You're running a really ancient version of HijackThis. Please download the latest version (1.99.1) from the link in my sig below and post the log that version generates.

If the netbus probes/attacks are really coming from the outside, there's not a heck of a lot you can do about it except hope that the attacker gets bored and moves on to a different range of IPs. If Norton is blocking the netbus requests, you may not be in any/much danger.

However, the fact that Norton is flagging the attempts makes it sound as though you're connecting directly to the Internet, which is a Bad Thing on a broadband connection. You should protect yourself further by installing a hardware firewall router such as those made by Linksys and Netgear.

OK, here's the new log with the not so ancient version

I am running my connection through AOL if that's worth anything, also is it worth trying any other firewalls or is Norton pretty good?

Thanks for the help!! ;)

Can you tell us anything about this file?:

C:\Program Files\Voyager100Test\fts.exe

Although I've seen it cropping up lately, I've found no definitive word on whether or not the file presents a threat. Locate the file in Explorer, right-click on it, and then choose the Properties option in the resulting popup menu.

- Is there anything in the Properties windows (such as a company name) which would help identify the file?

- Are there any other files in the Voyager folder which might shed some light on the subject?

I am running my connection through AOL if that's worth anything, also is it worth trying any other firewalls or is Norton pretty good?

I was suggesting that you install a dedicated hardware router/firewall, not another piece of firewalling software. The router is a small device that you connect between your computer and your Cable/DSL modem; it blocks probes/attacks before they even reach your computer(s).
