Hey everyone! Im a little hesitant to even post seeing as how Im not really sure what it is Im doing but I figured Id give it a shot, please be patient with me :o My family's computer runs pretty smoothly because I try to do regular spyware and adware checks and virus scans. I use Trend Micro Internet Security, Microsoft Antispyware, and Ad-Aware SE Personal. I am only 16 but am the only person in my household who seems to understand at least the basics about our computer. Thusly, I could really use some help from people who know what they are doing! I have Mozilla Firefox and it works just fine but when I try to use IE6 or AOL the error message "Cannot Find Server" is displayed. I have been searching for hours to get some help. I have combed through countless pages all containing tons of info about this problem but I find it to all be quite overwhelming. I have seen numerous mentions of Hijackthis and I decided to give it a try and leave it up to the experts to see if anyone can figure out what's going on with my poor machine. I have posted the log and would truly appreciate any help! Thanx a bunch!

PS - my log seems excessively long maybe? Im not sure if I did something wrong... :o ???

You should never feel silly for asking for help. Its how we all learn. There is No such thing as a dumb question. Honestly I am pretty impressed. You know about security, you run hijack this. I offer a few friendly tips. Here are links to 2 free sites that read hijack this logs automatically. http://www.hijackthis.de/ and http://www.help2go.com/modules.php?name=HJTDetective Also this free little handy start up manager will let you know if you have any nastys starting with your computer. http://www.windowsstartup.com/. One last thing if you run xp. Disable system restore by right click on my computer icon on your desktop, go to properties then check box to turn off system restore while scanning for virus. Also another tip. Scan for virus and spyware in safe mode. Reboot and hit f8. Only do this if you feel comfortable with it. Best of luck.

Thanx for your kind words and reassurance. I tried those tips you gave. No luck with that problem but i appreciate your interest. I did have some "nasty" stuff that i got rid of so that is certainly an improvement. I tried to update Trend Micro and Windows but I think maybe they both use IE so it won't work? Maybe? I had set the default browser a while back to Mozilla but still allowed access to IE, basically to avoid the IE problem but since IE stopped working so did the updates and AOL. I don't know what else to do! I still recieve a "Cannot Find Server" message or sometimes an "Invalid Syntax Error" with a "Page Cannot Be Displayed" message. It doesn't seem to matter which websites i go to, it's almost as if IE randomly picks one of those error messages. *pulls out hair!* I am open to any suggestions and will be checking frequently for replies. Thanx again...

tose sitesto sheck logsare ok ,but they don't tell you everything like the fact that you are running hijack from with in the zip program ,please unzip t o folder of it own as it creates backups and will not when its running from the zip program ,no i don't know what you fixed since your last log but it has a lot of nasties in it ,i know you ran spybot and adaware ,so maybe you can use the setup instructions for them im going to post below also a few othere programs to run .
,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,
Also just noticed your in the wrong section of the fourm .
,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,
go on over to the Security section of this fourm and post you problem along with a hijackthis log .
Spyware & Trojans and Other Nasties
,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,
Please Don't post the hijackthis log in this section Thanks .
,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

Please do this.
Download 'Hijack This!'. HijackThis
Save it in a convenient permanent folder such as C:\HJT\, double click HijackThis.exe, and hit "Scan".

Or HERE if that link fails to work or you don't have a zip program installed .

Your copy of HijackThis needs to be in a folder of it's own. When HJT fixes anything, it makes backups of the original files in the folder it is in. Since Temporary folders are emptied now and then (the files are DELETED), it would not be a good idea to have your backups there. Those backups would be VITAL to restoring your system if something went wrong in the FIX process!

1. Please go to you're 'My Documents' folder, right-click and select 'New > Folder' then name the folder 'HJT'.

2. Copy and paste HijackThis.exe to the new folder.

3. Close ALL windows except HJT

Go
Here
and Get Trojan-Hunter Fully working trial! and run a full scan
,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,
To remove trojans there is a tool which needs to be downloaded and run.

1. Please download Stinger and save it to your desktop

2. Double-click on the stinger.exe file and open the tool

3. Choose your entire hard drive to scan.

4. Choose Scan Now

5. Stinger will fix anything that it finds

6. Click the File menu and select Save report to file

7. Post the log file results here in this thread.

STINGER

Reboot to SAFE mode to delete files
How to start computer in safe mode

Please delete your temporary files by deleting all files and folders that are in those folders (do not delete the temp folder itself) like for example
C:\WINDOWS\Temp\
C:\Temp\
C:\Documents and Settings\username\Local Settings\Temp\
Also delete your Temporary Internet Files, be sure to also select delete all offline content.

Do a virus scan Please do an online scan, 2 would be better,

Micro World http://www.mwti.net/antivirus/free_utilities.asp
Trend Micro http://housecall.trendmicro.com/housecall/start_corp.asp

Make sure that you choose "fix" or "clean".

.
,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,
Download then unzip and run CWShredder to clean up clicking "FIX" to have it remove all it finds.

CWShredder available from these places :-

http://www.aluriasoftware.com/tools/cwshredder.zip
Or this as a full download without any unzipping required
http://www.downloads.subratam.org/CWShredder.exe
http://www.spywareinfo.com/downloads/tools/CWShredder.exe

We have found that some of the CWS infections can be removed better from safe mode, rather than normal mode.
To get to safe mode use the F8 key while booting the machine. Detailed instructions from :-
HERE
,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,
Then please do this since it’s better to use automated tools to get rid of the bad stuff use these 2 programs first before doing the final cleaning with HJT

First use Spybot S&D. (Version 1.3)
Spybot
Unzip, and update. Install the updates and run. Delete all that it marks in red.
Reboot

Then it’s time for Ad-Aware
Ad-Aware
Install and update by using the globe icon. Restart your computer and run Ad-Aware.
Press scan now and select drives and/or partitions to be scanned. When done select all and click next. Remove all checked items and then reboot your computer.

Please go to this page and read the instructions for how to configure Spybot S&D & Ad-Aware
How To Setup Spybot SD and Ad-Aware

,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,
If needed !!!!!!
Reboot and post a new HiJackThis log. You need an updated version of Hijackthis which you can get from HERE

Then post a HJT log as a reply to this topic.
.

<I've moved your thread to the appropriate forum>

You're obvioulsy not 'clueless' about computers; I too am impressed with your regard for your computer and willingness to learn.

Your log is not excessively long; all logs are different, some longer, some shorter... your's falls into a fairly average length.

Before fixing anything with HijackThis, it needs to be in it's own permanent folder. I usually suggest a folder like c:\HJT\hijackthis.exe, or, if you have an icon on your desktop for hijackthis, you can do this: right-click on your desktop and select New, Folder; give the new folder a name of your choosing (HJT or HijackThis would be good), and then drag the hijackthis.exe icon that is on your desktop into the new folder.

Try these fixes to see if you can get IE working:

Get IEFix from here:
http://www.majorgeeks.com/download4467.html

And Winsockfix from here:
http://www.digitalminds.net/index.pl/downloads

Then, close all browser windows, scan with hijackthis, and post a new log please.
