Hi,

I am running Microsoft Windows XP Media Center Edition Version 2002 Service Pack 2. I am also running McAfee Security Center. I was running Internet Explorer 7 then recently switched to IE8 then switched to Mozilla Firefox. I then started getting "artemis!..." and "vundo..." quarantine messages intermittently and after scans by McAfee. I thought perhaps that it was related to the web browser change and so I switched back to IE 7, but I am still getting these messages. I have run McAfee scan numerous times and it quarantines both "artemis!..." and "vundo..." however it continues to show up even after it is removed.

Also, recently, IE7 would start numerous new tabs on its own. The new tabs are empty pages but have "url.urtbk..." on the address bar. IE7 would also close/exit without warning and pop-ups would appear out of nowhere even though the pop-up blocker is enabled.

Reading some threads on the internet, I tried to download malwarebytes anti-malware, however, an error message at the end of the installation process comes up and I am unable to start the program.

I aplogize that my knowledge on this material is limited but I would really appreciate any help/advice/suggestions on how I could clean this up and also on how I could prevent this from happening again.

Thank you,
Gerard

Hi and welcome to the Daniweb forums :).

==========

Download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware (http://www.majorgeeks.com/Malwarebytes_Anti-Malware_d5756.html) to your desktop.

* Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
* At the end, be sure to checkmark the Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
* If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
* Download the update from here if you have problems.
* Once the program has loaded, select Perform full scan, then click Scan.
* When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
* Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
* When completed, a log will open in Notepad.
* Post the log back here.

The log can also be found here:
C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\log-date.txt
Or at C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\log-date.txt

Make sure that you restart the computer.

===========

Download HijackThis Executable from here. Save it to your desktop.
Start HJT & press the "Do a system scan and save a log file" button. When the scan is finished a window will pop up giving you the option of where to save it. Save it to desktop where it is easy to access. Open the log file and then go to the format Tab and make sure that wordwrap is unchecked. Copy the entire contents of the file & paste it into the body of your post. DO NOT FIX ANYTHING YET. Most of what is there is necessary for the running of your system.

Hi Crunchie,

Thank you for replying to my message. It is greatly appreciated.

I was able to download mbam-setup.exe to my desktop. However, immediately after I clicked the "finish" button, an error message pops up --

"Unable to execute file:
c:\ProgramFiles\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\mbam.exe
Create Process Failed, Code 2
The system cannot find the file specified"

I tried this a couple of times with the same result.

I was able to download and run Hijack this, here is the log from the scan:

I hope this helps. I did the scan with the computer on normal mode. Reading some of the other threads, did you want me to do the HijackThis scan in safemode?

Please advice.

Thank you,
Gerard

Hijackthis should always be run in normal mode.

Please download ComboFix by sUBs from HERE or HERE

  • You must download it to and run it from your Desktop
  • Physically disconnect from the internet.
  • Now STOP all your monitoring programs (Antivirus/Antispyware, Guards and Shields) as they could easily interfere with ComboFix.
  • Double click combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • When finished, it will produce a log. Please save that log to post in your next reply along with a fresh HJT log
  • Re-enable all the programs that were disabled during the running of ComboFix..

Note:
Do not mouse-click combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

CF disconnects your machine from the internet. The connection is automatically restored before CF completes its run. If CF runs into difficulty and terminates prematurely, the connection can be manually restored by restarting your machine.

Run Combofix ONCE only!!

Hi,

I was able to download and run ComboFix. When it initially started, however, a window popped up saying that Windows Recovery Console is not installed on my computer and asked if I wanted ComboFix to connect to the internet and download it. I clicked "No". Is this something I should download and install?

Is this "Recovery Console" the same thing as "System Restore?" I double-clicked on "My Computer" and the "System Restore" tab and the system restore function is enabled (not turned off). I hope that's ok.

Also, at the end of the ComboFix Scan, after it restarted the computer, there were three messages about missing dll files, If I remember correctly, one of them was a rundll.

Here is the Log from the ComboFix Scan:

Again, I really appreciate your help with this matter, kindly advice as to how I should proceed.

Thank you,
-Gerard

Recovery console warning is there as a precaution, just in case removing the infection causes problems with your pc. I have not yet had the need to install it, but there is no harm in doing so.

System restore should remain active (on).

Please go to Jotti's or to virustotal and have these files scanned. Post the results back here.

c:\windows\system32\hhj98fw.dll
c:\windows\system32\grcauth2.dll
c:\windows\system32\grcauth1.dll
c:\windows\system32\clauth2.dll
c:\windows\system32\clauth1.dll
c:\windows\system32\dijukigo.dll
c:\windows\system32\lugenipo.dll

Hi

Both Jotti and Virus Total were reading the grcauth 1 and 2 files as the same file and same for clauth 1 and 2 files. But I searched for them separately and rescanned each one.

Using Jotti's scan - 0 out of 21 scanners reported malware on all the files you posted.

Using Virus Total - all files had a 0/41 result.
I'm not sure if you need this but here are additional info on each file" from the Virus Total Scan.

Thank you,
Gerard

Ok. You have posted the wrong info. When the files have been scanned, the result should either be "nothing found' or it will tell you what malware it is.

Hi,

Sorry about that.

Both Jotti and Virus Total did not detect malware on any of those files you posted. 21 scanners used by Jotti found nothing on each of those files while 41 scanners used by VirusTotal found nothing on each of those files.

Ok, good. I am not seeing anything else there that looks out-of-place. How is the pc now?

Hi Crunchie,

I have been running IE for at least an hour now and I haven't had a pop-up or had those url.urtbk tabs popping up either. I also haven't had a message from mcafee regarding artemis or vundo, but i haven't done a mcafee scan since yesterday.

Thank you so much for your help. I really appreciate it. I know you're busy, but could you briefly tell me what happened and how I could prevent it from happening again? Do you recommend I switch to Firefox instead of using IE? And, I gather McAfee is not the best for malware, which program would you recommend I use to regularly check for malware? Lastly, if there are any other problems or if I encounter a similar problem in the future, do I do the same thing as what you did here? or do i start another post or continue on this one?

Again, thank you so much,
Gerard

If I had a question to ask, is there a way to direct the question to you?

Your security precautions are not quite up to scratch, hence the reason you were infected.
In my opinion, you should stop using IE as soon as and migrate to either OPERA browser, or FireFox.
Scrap McAfee and install Comodo suite, which is free for home users.

If this is now solved, you can mark the thread solved by selecting that option next to the reply button.

Any future problems need to have a new thread for.
All the volunteers who help here (PhilliePhan and jholland) are highly capable of assisting you in future if I am not available.

hi...i need a program that it will give me all the combinations of numbers that i will ask it.not just tell me the number of the combinations but write them to me one by one.is there any program for that job.where can i find it?? (roverphoenix did one in your site.www.daniweb.com/code/snippet216784.html)

Hi Crunchie,

Thank you once again for all your help. I will do what you recommened.

Very Grateful,
Gerard

Ok, but before you go;

Let's get rid of Combofix now that we are finished with it.

  • Click START then RUN
  • Now type Combofix /u in the runbox and click OK. Note the space between the X and the /, it needs to be there.

Hi Crunchie,

Sorry I couldn't reply to your last point sooner. I ran McAfee Scan and was still getting the trorjans: aretmis and vundo quarantined.

Here is one of the items that was quarantined:
c:\qobox\quarantine\c\windows\system32\wifowigu.dll.vir
the detection name for the trojan is Vundo.gen.cd

Do you know how I could completely eradicate these two trojans?

Thanks,
Gerard

If you follow my last instructions, you will find that the warnings will stop.
McAfee is finding the infection in Combofix's quarantine folder.

Hi,

Ok, I see that now. I will go ahead and uninstall ComboFix and mark this thread solved.

Again, thank you very much. Your help is greatly appreciated.
Gerard

No worries :). For your own peace of mind, uninstall Combofix and then do another McAfee scan.

Thanks Crunchie.

You're welcome.
