Ladies and Gents,

I would appreciate your help solving a problem with an XP laptop I have been asked to clean up. It was riddled with Malware and Spyware including various fake scanners asking the user to upgrade to pro.

I have been running malwarebytes and avg 2011 on it, which has shifted all but the redirect issue. I have followed the instructions on posting and have the various scan logs to show you. I was not able to download one of them as the bleepingcomputer website where the file is located is down.

I would be very grateful for any assistance!

J

Hijack this

Hi, welcome to daniweb. Right of the bat I can tell you that this AVG2011 is NOT really AVG it is a new fake removal program, masking itself as the AVG anti-virus program.

You need to follow these steps, given in depth at
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/virus-removal/remove-avg-antivirus-2011

Reboot your computer into Safe Mode with Networking. To do this, turn your computer off and then back on and immediately when you see anything on the screen, start tapping the F8 key on your keyboard. Once you get to the black DOS screen use your arrow keys to go to Safe Mode with Networking. Hit Enter to boot the computer to Safe Mode with Networking.
Once fully booted into Safe Mode with Networking you are going to have to end the processes that belong to AVG Antivirus 2011 and clean up some Registry settings so they do not interfere with the cleaning procedure. To do this, please download RKill to your desktop from the following link.

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/anti-virus/rkill

(Download page will open in a new tab or browser window.)

When at the download page, scroll down and click on the click on the link labeled eXplorer.exe download link. When you are prompted where to save it, please save it on your desktop.

Once it is downloaded, double-click on the eXplorer.exe icon in order to automatically attempt to stop any processes associated with AVG Antivirus 2011 and other Rogue programs. Please be patient while the program looks for various malware programs and ends them. When it has finished, the black window will automatically close and you can continue with the next step. If you get a message that RKill is an infection, do not be concerned. This message is just a fake warning given by AVG Antivirus 2011 when it terminates programs that may potentially remove it. If you run into these infections warnings that close RKill, a trick is to leave the warning on the screen and then run RKill again. By not closing the warning, this typically will allow you to bypass the malware trying to protect itself so that rkill can terminate AVG Antivirus 2011 . So, please try running RKill until the malware is no longer running. You will then be able to proceed with the rest of the guide. If you continue having problems running RKill, you can download the other renamed versions of RKill from the rkill download page. All of the files are renamed copies of RKill, which you can try instead. Please note that the download page will open in a new browser window or tab.

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/anti-virus/rkill

Do not reboot your computer after running RKill as the malware programs will start again.

Next Update MBA-M and run a Full Scan with it, allow it to Remove Everything found.
When removing the files, MBAM may require a reboot in order to remove some of them. If it displays a message stating that it needs to reboot, please allow it to do so. Once your computer has rebooted, and you are logged in, please continue with the rest of the steps.

Once the computer reboots to normal mode please again update MBA-M and run another Full Scan with it. If other files are found please have the program Remove them, Reboot again.

Next follow the instruction on our Read Me sticky for downloading and running the DDS Scanner.

http://www.daniweb.com/forums/thread134865.html

After you have done that come back here and post the new MBA-M logs and both logs from the DDS scanner. Note, on of those logs, Attach.txt will tell you to Attach that log, please don't do that, please also copy/paste that log back here along with the others.

Dear jholland1964,

Thank you for your reply, I am quite sure the version of AVG I have installed is the genuine version, I installed it myself just yesterday from my memory stick.

Much of your very detailed (thank you) post does appear to be based upon the assumption that AVG is the fake one. Based on the hijack this log and other logs I provided is there something I should be running or trying to remove manually.

Cheers

James

Those steps I have given you are the same preliminary steps given for any and all fake alert/redirect infection, both of which you appear to have on the computer.

You may have run other steps, but you posted no other logs, other than the GMER log

Our Read Me Sticky very clearly asks each poster to run the following programs and post the logs:
GMER, which you have done; MBA-M which you say you ran but posted no logs from it, DDS Scanner evidently not run so no logs posted. All of those tools and their logs are vitally important for us to see so that we can decide what other tools need to be run. Whether your AVG2011 is the real thing or not makes no difference, even the legitimate AVG 2011 would NOT remove this type of infection and certainly would not remove a rootkit, which clearly shows in your GMER log.

You said you posted a HJT log, you did not. You may have thought you did, but it is not on this thread. But that said, if you noted in our Read Me sticky we don't ask for a HiJackThis log in the preliminary stages anymore because it does not show enough to make a judgement on these new infections, they rarely show in the HJT log anymore.

We "may" request it's use at a later time after all other steps are run but many times today that is never requested.

As I said, GMER clearly shows a rootkit on the computer. These can not be removed manually.

The steps given you are the standard steps given for any fake scanner infection and which your browser redirects show very likely is still on the computer.

I have no idea what you mean when you say this:
I was not able to download one of them as the bleepingcomputer website where the file is located is down.
Why would this LOG be at bleepingcomputer? Any tools run using the steps in our Read Me sticky produce logs ON your computer, not another website.

The only tool we request in our Read Me Sticky from bleepingcomputer is the DDS scanner and by clicking on DDS Scanner in our Read Me Sticky you would have automatically received the executable for that program, not taken to bleepingcomputer.

Since you don't wish to follow those steps then I say that of course is your choice.

I have no manual removal steps because rootkits are nearly impossible to remove manually but since you don't want to follow steps given here then I would advise you to try another forum for assistance.
Sorry.
Judy

Judy,

I appreciate that the help provided in this forum is free provided by volunteers, but I am not intentionally not following steps.

As you will see from the very bottom of my first post, it says 'Hijack this' in bold where I had pasted in the logs, I also posted the Malware Bytes log. The post was cut off for some reason, do you know if there is a post length limit.

My reference to bleeping computer being unavailable was that I couldn't download the installation file for DDS, as bleeping computer was not available when I read the sticky (at least to me), I wasn't suggesting that I would need to download a log from their website.

I am sorry that I tried to post the HJT log, this was standard procedure in previous forums I have posted on, so it was my first step before came across Daniweb and read the sticky.

I will now try to post the remaining logs including the DDS log.

James

End of Logs

Ok fair enough, let's chalk this up to misunderstandings on both sides and get this computer cleaned.

First of all concerning the lack of the HJT log. Think that was just a glitch because as you see with this post, which is much longer than your original, there is no size limit and the HJT log should have easily been contained in your first post. It may be your paste just didn't paste. So always Preview your post BEFORE posting by clicking the Preview Post button and before you hit the Submit Post button so that if something doesn't show as it should you can fix it. Then also be sure to read through your post after hitting Submit and before leaving so that if something doesn't look right or post right you can click Edit and go back and fix it.

I WILL want to see a new one, but later, after all some other tools are run.

Now a question, you said you ran AVG 2011, which shows as installed on your computer however, in your DDS log it is not AVG 2011 showing as running but AVG 2010 so are you 100% certain that it is AVG 2011? You said you installed it from a Memory Stick. I would recommend you scan that file on the stick with MBA-M

Your DDS scan clearly shows a rootkit on there so you need to run this tool:

Please read carefully and follow these steps.

* Download TDSSKiller and save it to your Desktop.
* Extract its contents to your desktop.
* Once extracted, open the TDSSKiller folder and doubleclick on TDSSKiller.exe to run the application, then on Start Scan.

* If an infected file is detected, the default action will be Cure, click on Continue.

* If a suspicious file is detected, the default action will be Skip, click on Continue.

* It may ask you to reboot the computer to complete the process. Click on Reboot Now.

* If no reboot is required, click on Report. A log file should appear. Please copy and paste the contents of that file here.
* If a reboot is required, the report can also be found in your root directory, (usually C:\ folder) in the form of "TDSSKiller.[Version]_[Date]_[Time]_log.txt". Please copy and paste the contents of that file here.

Next please to the following:

Please download ComboFix by sUBs from

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/anti-virus/combofix

Please note that the BleepingComputer.com download link will expire in 10 minutes after you click it so if you don’t click within ten minutes after reaching the page you will need to refresh the page.

• You must download it to and run it from your Desktop
• Physically disconnect from the internet.
• Now STOP all your monitoring programs (Antivirus/Antispyware, Guards and Shields) as they could easily interfere with ComboFix.
• Double click combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
• When ComboFix has finished running, you will see a screen stating that it is preparing the log report
• This can take a while, so please be patient. If you see your Windows desktop disappear, do not worry. This is normal and ComboFix will restore your desktop before it is finished. Eventually you will see a new screen that states the program is almost finished and telling you the programs log file, or report, will be located at C:\ComboFix.txt.
• Re-enable all the programs that were disabled during the running of ComboFix..
• Then post back here with that log and a new scan log from HiJackThis.

Note:
Do not mouse-click combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

CF disconnects your machine from the internet. The connection is automatically restored before CF completes its run. If CF runs into difficulty and terminates prematurely, the connection can be manually restored by restarting your machine.

Run Combofix ONCE only!!

Judy

Judy,

Thank you for your reply.

I have run the TDSSKiller and it did indeed find an infection and offere to cure it with a restart, which I did.

I have tried to disable AVG2011 (see screen shot links for confirmation of genuine software), but you can only disable components. I thought disabling the resident shield which is the only file access monitoring feature would be sufficient, however when run, combofix states AVG must be uninstalled. Is, in your opinion, it still necessary to run combo fix. Certainly the redirect issue has been resolved by TDSSKiller and as I stated in my original post, all other fake alerts were removed with AVG 2011 and Malware Bytes before I posted.

Please find below the HJT log as requested.

Yes, absolutely Combofix must be run. Yes, Uninstall AVG. It frankly is not even ranked in the top 15 of good anti-virus programs anymore and would advise against using it.

Ok, I am uninstalling it now.

What does Combofix do that it needs anti-virus to be uninstalled?

What free or otherwise antivirus program would you reccomend, possibly you could tell me who the authority on ranking anti virus applications is that has ranked AVG outside of the top 15.

Will you want a new HJT log after combofix has run.

James

Yes, absolutely Combofix must be run. Yes, Uninstall AVG. It frankly is not even ranked in the top 15 of good anti-virus programs anymore and would advise against using it.

The anti-virus program needs to be disabled because it may interfere with the proper running of ComboFix. Yours must be uninstalled because you couldn't get it to disable or turn off. There are many instances when an anti-virus program needs to be turned off because it may interfere or stop a program update, certain operating systems updates may be one of these times, removing deep infections such as a rootkit infection may be another.

The anti-virus ranking report I use is this one and the "not in top 15" comment refereed to the test results posted in December. I had not yet read the most recent tests rank it higher but not nearly as high as some others. AVG just does not offer the protection that other programs do and I have helped clean more machines running AVG than others in the past year. Second one I found much of the time on infected machines was McAfee in case you are wondering.

http://www.av-comparatives.org/comparativesreviews/summary-reports

My personal recommendation for a good free av program is Avira. It consistently scores quite high in all of these tests. It offers excellent protection, I have used it myself for nearly three years.

Judy,

Here is the log file of combofix.

Cheers

James

Well with the deletions shown in the log this certainly tells us that combofix was an absolute necessity. Let me get back with you soon on the next required steps, I need to confer with others on this.

Judy

Please go to VirSCAN.org FREE on-line scan service

Copy and paste the following file path into the "Suspicious files to scan" box on the top of the page:

c:\windows\system32\tmp.tmp

If copy/paste does not work, you will have to browse to the file.

Click on the Upload button

If a pop-up appears saying the file has been scanned already, please select the ReScan button.

Once the Scan is completed, click on the "Copy to Clipboard" button. This will copy the link of the report into the Clipboard.

Paste the contents of the Clipboard in your next reply.

Dear Judy

I received the following when trying to upload the file. I have tried several times, browsing directly and with copy/paste.

'ERROR: Can't find upload file!'

James

Were you able to actually locate the file? If so, delete it manually.

Judy,

Sorry for the delay in responding. I have now, after using 'unlocker' to unlock it from the process lsass.exe, deleted tmp.tmp.

Do you consider the machine clear of all malicious software that the various scans detected?

Certainly the machine appears to be performing without any symptoms of infection.

Thank you very much for your support!

James

Can't say that for sure yet.
Do the following next:

Please Run the ESET Online Scanner

http://www.eset.com/onlinescan/scanner.php?i_agree=14
* You will need to allow an Active X to be installed and you will need to use either IE or Firefox for the scan
* You will need to temporarily Disable your current Anti-virus program.
* Be sure the option to Remove found threats is checked and the option to Scan unwanted applications is Checked.
* When you have completed that scan, a scanlog ought to have been created and located at C:\Program Files\EsetOnlineScanner\log.txt.

I worked on this virus lately on someone's computer, and I think this is what I did:
I ran Bit-defender on-line anti-virus
I also installed win-patrol on their computer which shows me all the items that are in the start up list. I disabled all that I didn't recognize. Win patrol also has an active task list, and a scheduled list. I removed the scheduled items that I didn't know, and stopped any active tasks. Win Patrol will also help you keep things from getting started on your computer that you don't want to auto start. This has been one of my best aides in keeping my own computer clean.
I use Avira Anti-vir. It is free and excellent. To see a good list of software that are all virus & spy-ware free, and have really been tested [some sites don't really do that even if they say they do, or don't test it well], go to http://majorgeeks.com/ One of their picks, Panda Cloud, while extremely good, conflicted with my system, so I couldn't use it.
On the left side is all the categories of software, much of it free. When you go to a category, there will be software with a little green box saying "pick" which is the ones they feel are best. On the right, click on top freeware picks and there is an anti-virus category.FYI, I use Online Armor which Major Geeks also recommended.

readdream, thank you for the suggestions, however at this point we are still waiting for James's response concerning the last step I gave him. Adding other programs at this point would not be what we would recommend. Later, maybe, but not at this point. We need to be certain the computer is truly clean.

James, have you been able to complete the ESET scan as directed?
