Okay, so here's my data:

szAppName : svchost.exe szAppVer : 5.1.2600.2180 szModName : ntdll.dll
szModVer : 5.1.2600.2180 offset : 00011f52

C:\DOCUME~1\Owner\LOCALS~1\Temp\WER2f6a.dir00\svchost.exe.mdmp
C:\DOCUME~1\Owner\LOCALS~1\Temp\WER2f6a.dir00\appcompat.txt

I've cleaned these above temp folders on various occasions, and done every bit of cleaning that's recommended here on Daniweb, and even tried a system restore, but it won't work.

The most irritating thing about all this is that it's got my sound device all screwed up; well, at least, the problem of the Alcan worm and this generic host process error came around the same time. System sounds work, other media (including CD's) don't work, and I can't adjust the volume. With the sound device properties, it tells me there is no sound device installed, but under system information it tells me I have the Conexant AC-Link 2 Channel Audio. I've been to Conexant's website looking for patches/updates or anything of the sort, nothin' doin'.

I've hit a wall. Enlighten me.

Please begin by doing the following:

Download the (free) HijackThis utility:

Once downloaded, follow these instructions to install and run the program:

Create a folder for HJT outside of any Temp/Temporary folders and move the HijackThis.exe file to that folder now. A folder such such as C:\HijackThis or C:\Spyware Tools\HijackThis will do.

Run HijackThis, but do not have HJT fix anything yet; only have it scan your system! Once the scan is complete, the "Scan" button will turn into an option to "Save log...".
Save the log in the folder you created for HijackThis; the saved file will be named "hijackthis.log". Open the log file with Windows Notepad, and cut-n-paste the entire contents of the Notepad file here.

Right. Here ya go.

That log looks clean.
Make sure when you run the scan with HJT you are NOT in safe mode.

Yes, I know it's clean, hence my problem. I was not in safe mode upon running the scan.

Perhaps I should try reinstalling my sound drivers at this point, which I have no copies of... so... damn. Gateway support, here I come.

Well then isn't there an update driver option in the properties menu.
That might work.
and i think youl have to call the company that made the sound card not gateway.
