G'day Guys,

First up just want to say thank you for being here and for all the info - just being able to browse through the help you have provided to others on these forums has helped me fix most of my problems.

I had a similar issue to two other ppls in here...

http://www.daniweb.com/techtalkforums/thread74149.html
http://www.daniweb.com/techtalkforums/thread44977.html

Where my IE would direct to a different site to the link I would click on around 50% of the time. I noticed when it did that it would briefly display the initial address it was directing thorugh in the grey bar at the bottom of the browser window - it was a http:// with an IP address, which I could never write down quick enough and some folder info at the end.

Anyhoo, I think by following the instructions in those other threads I have beaten it, but thought I would like to post a log file here to double check with someone who understands it all and can give me the thumbs up (or down).

Thanks again for your time and efforts.

Cheers,

Adam.

Can you please do the following.

===============

Scan with HijackThis and then place a check next to all the following, if present:

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {36645342-9475-2663-166A-466739207346} - (no file)
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {9A5C9584-DE98-310B-21A1-899F87184987} - C:\WINDOWS\system\wmdcst32.dll
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {D2B9F8E1-07A4-4433-A7ED-FF1C72166815} - c:\windows\system32\hamaham.dll

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Alcmtr] ALCMTR.EXE
O4 - Global Startup: Adobe Acrobat Speed Launcher.lnk = ?
O4 - Global Startup: Suitcase 11.0.lnk = ?

O11 - Options group: [INTERNATIONAL] International*

O20 - Winlogon Notify: cqxwcxhz - C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\hamaham.dll

Now, close all instances of Internet Explorer and any other windows you have open except HiJackThis, click "Fix checked".

===============

Locate and delete the following item(s), if present. Make sure you are able to view system and hidden files/ folders:

files...

C:\WINDOWS\system\wmdcst32.dll
c:\windows\system32\hamaham.dll

-

Note that some of these file(s)/folder(s) may or may not be present. If present, and cannot be deleted because they're 'in use', try deleting them in Safe Mode by doing the following:

  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear.

Select the first option to run Windows in Safe Mode hit enter.

-

Reboot.

===============

After rebooting, rescan with hijackthis and post back a new log. Please let me know how your pc is now.

OK.

Thanks for the help.

It would seem this hamaham.dll file is undeletable. I did all you asked, but couldnt delete it, even in safe mode.

Also it had a backup of itself hamaham.dll.bak.

I then downloaded some delete on reboot software and tried it all, tried using dos prompt to delete, tried to use delete on reboot software from safe mode... but to no avail... best result i got was that the killbox software i tried deleted the backup version but cant kill the actual file...

omg - what a pain in the ....

Any ideas???

Here is the log...

First off, clean up the same entries using hijackthis again. Make certain all your browser windows are closed.

==

1. Please download The Avenger by Swandog46 to your Desktop.

  • Click on Avenger.zip to open the file
  • Extract avenger.exe to your desktop

2. Copy all the text (including the 'Files to delete') contained in the code box below to your clipboard by highlighting it and pressing Ctrl+C:

Files to delete:
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\hamaham.dll

Note: the above code was created specifically for this user. If you are not this user, do NOT follow these directions as they could damage the workings of your system.

3. Now, start The Avenger program by clicking on its icon on your desktop.

  • Under "Script file to execute" choose "Input Script Manually".
  • Now click on the Magnifying Glass icon which will open a new window titled "View/edit script"
  • Paste the text copied to clipboard into this window by pressing (Ctrl+V).
  • Click Done
  • Now click on the Green Light to begin execution of the script
  • Answer "Yes" twice when prompted.

4. The Avenger will automatically do the following:

  • It will Restart your computer. ( In cases where the code to execute contains "Drivers to Unload", The Avenger will actually restart your system twice.)
  • On reboot, it will briefly open a black command window on your desktop, this is normal.
  • After the restart, it creates a log file that should open with the results of Avenger’s actions. This log file will be located at C:\avenger.txt
  • The Avenger will also have backed up all the files, etc., that you asked it to delete, and will have zipped them and moved the zip archives to C:\avenger\backup.zip.

5. Please copy/paste the content of c:\avenger.txt into your reply along with a fresh HJT log by using Add/Reply

kk - did everything as you asked but it looks like the little bugger still exists in system32 folder...

Post a new hijackthis log when done.

G'day again,

Had already tried the Killbox software as mentioned above - but retried following your instructions exactly...

On the standard file delete it comes up after twenty seconds saying could not delete file, on the reboot option it stalls before rebooting with the following error message...

PendingFileRenameOperations Registry Data has been Removed by External Process!

Sooo... Not sure what to do next... I had a look at my registry using regedit command and found these entries...

http://www.hddesign.com.au/reg_key.gif

and

http://www.hddesign.com.au/reg_key2.gif

Should I delete these from the regedit screen and then try to kill the file???

Do you know what this thing doing to my system?

Have you ever seen it before - I cant seem to find anywhere else on the web any reference to this file...

Thansk again so much for your help.

Cheers,

Adam.

Hold off on deleting those entries. Upload the file here;

Please go to Jotti's or to virustotal and have this file scanned. Post the results back here.

C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\hamaham.dll

kk - went to both and nothing from Jotis - all clean but got two hits from the virustotal scan...

Prevx1 V2 04.16.2007 Spyware.Free.Serials.Hijacker

Sunbelt 2.2.907.0 04.07.2007 CoolWebSearch

Not seen CWS around for a while and haven't had to recommend running the following for the same time;

Download CWShredder 2.19 from here and run it.[/b] Select the fix button & it will fix everything related to CoolWebSearch that is stored in it's database. Close ALL windows, including Internet Explorer, before running CWShredder. Reboot.

Reboot after doing this & post another log please.

Ran it but it came up saying it couldnt find any problems on my computer...?

...i see that the O20 entry persists - with that there the dll will start even in safemode... is that key's data value for AppInit_DLLs being regenerated if you delete it? Go into your registry and delete the value for this key name:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Windows
Select AppInit_DLLs in the right pane and modify its value to remove hamaham.dll.
I don't know why avenger, killbox couldn't deal, but vundofix should do it?
