I have a PC that has a mind of it's own. My daughter has hit about every website that can bring me a headache and now the PC has a mind of its own. I have used Symantec AV10, spybot, etc. Nothing seems to rid the PC of the garbage. My logfile for Hijackthis follows - any help you can provide is appreciated!

Hi and welcome to Daniweb forums :).

Can you please right click on hijackthis.exe and select rename and rename the file to analysethis before going ahead.

=======

Go to Add/Remove programs and uninstall the following, if present:

Errorsafe,Errorsafefree

The above could appear anywhere within the entry. Be careful not to remove any personal or system software.

===============

Scan with HijackThis and then place a check next to all the following, if present:

R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant =
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,CustomizeSearch =
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page =

R3 - URLSearchHook: (no name) - {12F02779-6D88-4958-8AD3-83C12D86ADC7} - (no file)

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [dtohdr] c:\windows\system32\nnnbkhv.exe
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [ErrorSafeFree] "C:\Program Files\ErrorSafe Free\uers.exe" /min
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [DDC] C:\WINDOWS\system32\evrtccer.exe
O4 - Global Startup: SmartLink for Lotus Notes.lnk = ?

O23 - Service: DomainService - Unknown owner - C:\WINDOWS\system32\evrtccer.exe (file missing)

Now, close all instances of Internet Explorer and any other windows you have open except HiJackThis, click "Fix checked".

===============

Locate and delete the following item(s), if present. Make sure you are able to view system and hidden files/ folders:

folders...

C:\Program Files\ErrorSafe Free

files...

c:\windows\system32\nnnbkhv.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\evrtccer.exe

-

Note that some of these file(s)/folder(s) may or may not be present. If present, and cannot be deleted because they're 'in use', try deleting them in Safe Mode by doing the following:

  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear.

Select the first option to run Windows in Safe Mode hit enter.

-

Reboot.

===============

To help protect your system from hostile ActiveX content, or special 'downloadable' files:

Download, install and keep updated, SpywareBlaster. If you've installed it for the first time:

1) Check for any available updates; if present, they'll be automatically downloaded and installed.
2) Next, "Enable all protection".
3) Exit the program.

-

Note: Remember to regularly check for updates.

===============

After rebooting, rescan with hijackthis and post back a new log. Please let me know how your pc is now.

Crunchy - when you say rename hijack.exe, do you mean the executuable on the PC? No problem in doing this, can you tell what this prevents?

OK - I did not find nnnbkhv.exe or evrtccer.exe in the windows\system32 folder. I did not remove

04 - Global Startup: Samrtlink For Lotus Notes.lnk = ?

Crunchy - when you say rename hijack.exe, do you mean the executuable on the PC? No problem in doing this, can you tell what this prevents?

need you to rename the executable. C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis\HijackThis.exe and the reason for this is that the infection you possibly have, hides itself from hijackthis whilst it has it's default name. You can rename it anything you wish.

Please download VundoFix.exe
to your desktop.

  • Double-click VundoFix.exe to run it.
  • Click the Scan for Vundo button.
  • Once it's done scanning, click the Remove Vundo button.
  • You will receive a prompt asking if you want to remove the files, click YES
  • Once you click yes, your desktop will go blank as it starts removing Vundo.
  • When completed, it will prompt that it will reboot your computer, click OK.
  • Please post the contents of C:\vundofix.txt and a new HijackThis log.

Note: It is possible that VundoFix encountered a file it could not remove.
In this case, VundoFix will run on reboot, simply follow the above
instructions starting from "Click the Scan for Vundo button." when
VundoFix appears at reboot.

Crunchy - when you say rename hijack.exe, do you mean the executuable on the PC? No problem in doing this, can you tell what this prevents?

some malware is crafty and prevents well known antivirus/malware removal tools from detecting it, or working at all. Renaming the .exe to something else usually is enough to prevent this.

Thanks for the attention on this! :)
