Starting yesterday my laptop's internet browsers decided to stop working. Aim works, WoW works, everything that doesnt connect to a website works. If i type in an address it changes it to HTTP:/// or something like http://search.yahoo.com/search?p=www.myspace.com&ei=UTF-8&fr=hp-psnb

I tried downloading firefox to see if it was a problem with IE, and alas Firefox doesnt work either.

I've ran HiJackThis, NOD32, AVG Anti-Virus, ComboFix wont work because its vista, and VundoFix. Non of them has come up with any form of spyware or virus. In addition to running scans, i have reset IE to default and tried clearing all temp folders, and nothing worked.

Below is the HiJackThis log (v 1.99 because the new one wont make a log for some reason) and once AVG Anti-spyware is done, i will post that log too. But, i figured i might as well get this started and see what people come up with.

Thank you all in advance for taking a look!

Anyone have any insight to whats going on?

Interesting, Liz. Not one instance of svchost.exe running. I am not used to that. But then this is a Vista machine and I don't know too much about them.
C:\Windows\System32\svchost.exe
It may be an incompatibility with your version of hijackthis.... which is out of date/superseded.
==download hijackthis: http://www.majorgeeks.com/download5554.html
-install it to a new folder alongside your program files and delete your old desktop copy. Make a fresh log for us.

Alright finally figured out why the new version of HiJackThis wasnt working and why it gave me an error (vista makes you run it as an admin... annoying, miss the good ol days when you can double click anything.)

So here it is, hopefully it helps...

And you know, now that you mention it, this computer is vista and it does have SVCHost, but the laptop does not... very interesting indeed... could that be causing the IE problem?

Oh, you betcha. See if there is a copy in cache [system32\dllcache - you must show protected files and folders to see dllcache\..], but there may also be a copy in downloaded M$ files directory from a windows update...?, but that should be the same as the copy in cache.
Got one?... uh-oh... cos it should have been automatically replaced into system32\ from cache copy by windows...
Not got one?.. then get it from windows updates.
I really don't know how it could go missing.... possibly from a glitch during an update session?
You could use hijackthis to fix these two entries:

-apart from that your log is clean.
...but I warn - I know Vista like I know the back of my head.

Hello,

here's the source of the problem
-> your local firewall.

It blocks the connexion from localhost:dynamic to proxyserver:port

I'm pretty sure it's most people on the net with this problem just installed a firewall, or installed one times before using their first proxy ^^

hope this will help

Hi Guys,

Could anybody solve this issue ? I would greatly appreciate any solution for this.
I am facing this problem since yesterday suddenly.
It used to work for me before. I did not change any firewall settings.
But, IE and firefox stopped working totally.

I am running Windows XP - SP2. and Norton Internet security firewall.

Mani.

Thanks..
I will update the post with the log.

Mani.

Hi,
Though I didnt change any firewall settings off late.. Just wanted to make sure, that firewall isn't the issue and disabled it (based on a post above)...
And to my surprise, I was able to browse through IE.
Then, I started changing the Firewall settings one by one, but nothing worked. Only "Complete Disable" allowed me to browse. Individual disable of security, firewall, etc.. didn't help.
The reason was, the firewall registration had expired and it totally shut the internet through IE and firefox when enabled. I un-installed and re-installed the same version and now it works fine.

Thanks for this wonderful community.

Mani.

Well i had this amazing idea to log into the computer under safe mode with networking. Who'd ever think about doing that?

Well, IE and FF work in safemode, so now it brings me to the conclusion that there is something that boots up with windows that isnt letting me browse (it almost seems to always redirect me to HTTP:///). So its a program or file that cant be picked up by any scanning tool ive used. So what do i do now? the laptop didnt come with any CDs but it does have a backup partition on it, but i have no clue how to use it as of now. Any other easier way to fix this besides reinstalling?

Liz, did you ever sort out the svchost.exe issue? Without svchost running no services can run under it. No networking....
