OS: Win XP Media
Symptoms: Explorer.exe shuts down for about 7 seconds, then reappears for about 10 seconds. The cycle repeats. While Explorer.exe is shut down, my Start button, task bar and desktop disappear. If I have a Windows Explorer window open, it closes when Explorer.exe shuts down and does not reappear. This makes it very difficult to navigate to files unless you have a shortcut to a file or folder on your desktop and can navigate to that very quickly.

The problem, I think, is in two DLL files: xxyvwwx.dll and ddcyw.dll.

Both are inaccessible when in Safe Mode. I've run HijackThis, VundoFix and ComboFix. I've run them in Regular Mode and in Safe Mode. HJT identifies the files and purports to get rid of them, but they regenerate.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi and welcome to Daniweb forums :).
In your next reply can you please post the entire hijackthis log :).

1. Download this file from one of the following links :

http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe
http://www.techsupportforum.com/sectools/combofix.exe

2. Double click combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
3. When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Post that log in your next reply, along with a new hijackthis log.

Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall

Hi, and thanks for the response. The HJT file provided in the first post was the entire file (well, except for "Logfile of Trend Micro HijackThis v2.0.2
S," which I inadvertently either didn't copy or didn't paste. I should also note that, based on some advice in some thread somewhere (sorry I can't be more specific), I changed the name of the HJT executable to "iamabunny.exe."

Here's a new HJT logfile, generated this morning:

I hope we're a step closer. Thanks for your help.

Open Notepad (Start -> Run -> type notepad in the Open field -> OK) and copy and paste the following text in the code box:

File::
C:\WINDOWS\system32\vtsqn.dll
C:\WINDOWS\system32\xxyvwwx.dll

Save this as CFScript.txt and change the "Save as type" to "All Files" and place it on your desktop.

Referring to the image above, drag CFScript.txt into ComboFix.exe.
ComboFix will now run a scan on your system. It may reboot your system when it finishes. This is normal.
When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Copy and paste the contents of the log in your next reply.

CAUTION: Do not mouse-click ComboFix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

Post another hijackthis log too if the removal was successful.

==

What version of Java do you have? If not the latest, uninstall the old version first, then download the latest.

I just completed the ComboFix and HJT scans.

ComboFix log:

The problem has not manifested itself yet, but I notice that the xxyvwwx.dll file is still there.

I spoke too soon. The problem is back.

1. Please download The Avenger by Swandog46 to your Desktop.

 • Click on Avenger.zip to open the file
 • Extract avenger.exe to your desktop

2. Copy all the text (including the 'Files to delete') contained in the code box below to your clipboard by highlighting it and pressing Ctrl+C:

Files to delete:
C:\WINDOWS\system32\xxyvwwx.dll

Note: the above code was created specifically for this user. If you are not this user, do NOT follow these directions as they could damage the workings of your system.

3. Now, start The Avenger program by clicking on its icon on your desktop.

 • Under "Script file to execute" choose "Input Script Manually".
 • Now click on the Magnifying Glass icon which will open a new window titled "View/edit script"
 • Paste the text copied to clipboard into this window by pressing (Ctrl+V).
 • Click Done
 • Now click on the Green Light to begin execution of the script
 • Answer "Yes" twice when prompted.

4. The Avenger will automatically do the following:

 • It will Restart your computer. ( In cases where the code to execute contains "Drivers to Unload", The Avenger will actually restart your system twice.)
 • On reboot, it will briefly open a black command window on your desktop, this is normal.
 • After the restart, it creates a log file that should open with the results of Avenger’s actions. This log file will be located at C:\avenger.txt
 • The Avenger will also have backed up all the files, etc., that you asked it to delete, and will have zipped them and moved the zip archives to C:\avenger\backup.zip.

5. Please copy/paste the content of c:\avenger.txt into your reply along with a fresh HJT log by using Add/Reply

Can you please do the following.

===============

Scan with HijackThis and then place a check next to all the following, if present:

R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = about:blank
R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page =

R3 - URLSearchHook: Yahoo! Toolbar - {EF99BD32-C1FB-11D2-892F-0090271D4F88} - (no file)

O20 - Winlogon Notify: xxyvwwx - xxyvwwx.dll (file missing)

Now, close all instances of Internet Explorer and any other windows you have open except HiJackThis, click "Fix checked".

===============

Locate and delete the following item(s), if present. Make sure you are able to view system and hidden files/ folders:

files...

C:\WINDOWS\system32\ddcya.dll

-

Note that some of these file(s)/folder(s) may or may not be present. If present, and cannot be deleted because they're 'in use', try deleting them in Safe Mode by doing the following:

 • Restart your computer
 • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
 • Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear.

Select the first option to run Windows in Safe Mode hit enter.

-

Reboot.

===============

After rebooting, rescan with hijackthis and post back a new log. Please let me know how your pc is now.

I could not delete ddcya.dll, either in Normal Mode or in Safe Mode; the file was in use both times.

I'm still having the problem.

Here's the HJT log:

Please go to Jotti's or to virustotal and have these files scanned. Post the results back here.

C:\WINDOWS\system32\aycdd.ini2
C:\WINDOWS\system32\aycdd.bak2
C:\WINDOWS\system32\aycdd.bak1
C:\WINDOWS\system32\dllcache\xrxwiadr.dll
C:\WINDOWS\system32\dllcache\xrxftplt.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\dllcache\xrxwbtmp.dll
C:\WINDOWS\system32\dllcache\xrxscnui.dll
C:\WINDOWS\system32\dllcache\xrxflnch.exe

I sanned all files at Jotti's. All scans came back OK. No log files were generated locally, and I didn't think there'd be any point in copying and pasting the results pages from the web site. I haven't had the problem since last evening.

I am almost certain that these files C:\WINDOWS\system32\aycdd.ini2
C:\WINDOWS\system32\aycdd.bak2
C:\WINDOWS\system32\aycdd.bak1
are related to the Vundo infection. I just wanted to confirm it :).
At the very least I would pop them in your recycle bin :). Can you post me a new hijackthis log please.

After checking the aycdd.ini file and determining it wasn't a normal test file, I took all the aycdd files to the Recycle Bin. I can always restore them later. Here's the HJT log:

Can you please do the following.

===============

Scan with HijackThis and then place a check next to all the following, if present:

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {E3437832-2553-44FB-BDAE-0C3E43015B72} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\ddcya.dll (file missing)

Now, close all instances of Internet Explorer and any other windows you have open except HiJackThis, click "Fix checked".

==

That should do you :)

Problem solved. Thanks very much for your help!
