when i try to install ms office 2003 on vista home premium it takes through the product key and everything but when i click install it says i am missing file: CS561404.CAB.
what is the problem?

It probably means your disk is scratched

what SUGGESTIONS????

if it is indeed a bad disk, take it back and get a new one

Easy way to see if that indeed is the problem. Try copying all files from the Office CD to the hard drive. If it fails, it's a bad disk. If it passes, you have a different problems, probably a corrupt Windows Installer or faulty memory.

The office CD is fine -- I'm able to copy it.....

Try disabling your active protection- antivirus, antispyware, maybe firewall- (it may be a good idea to disconnect from the internet) and try again. Some active protection silently does not allow some things to install, thinking its malware- a false positive.

You can also try disabling all unnecessary background programs by using msconfig Start>run>msconfig

Something that may help you here: Startup inspector http://www.windowsstartup.com/

If that doesn't work, try updating and cleaning up your windows installation. Try these things:

CCleaner (junk files and registry cleanup): www.ccleaner.com

Dial-a-fix (Many microsoft-specific problems): http://wiki.djlizard.net/Dial-a-fix

Windows Safety Scanner: (its in beta mode for vista, but it works fine for me) http://onecare.live.com/site/en-us/center/whatsnew.htm

Also run your favorite antivirus and antispyware programs. You might also try Trendmicro's housecall

housecall.trendmicro.com

Finally, you can try getting your disk buffed. Also, if you can copy all the contents of the disk, try running the installation from the copied over .exe file. I've installed office that way before- it works fine. Just copy the entire disk into a folder, then click setup.exe or whatever it may be named.

Get back to us on this one!

Sorry for double post, just thought up some new things.

One- Dial-a-fix is for 32 bit versions of windows only, so check which one you have- 32 or 64.

Two- To check for faulty memory, visit http://www.memtest86.com/ and create a bootable CD or floppy disk. The disk won't be readable to windows when you create it, but if you set your computer to boot from cd/floppy before booting from your hard drive, it should start testing your memory. Let it pass a couple times- the more the better- overnight is recommended. If no errors happen, your memory is good.

Can you install other programs or apps? If so, you probably have a fine installer. If not:

Three- For the corrupt installer (which I think is unlikely)

see if you can update Windows,

run that safety scanner,

run a chckdsk (error checking) Start>Computer>Right click C: (or your drive with your OS installed on it) > Properties> Tools tab> Error checking> Check both boxes > OK > Reboot computer,

Perhaps boot off of your OS CD (if you have one) and run SFC ("SFC /Scannow")

Do these only if you can't get the other things to work, because it seems more likely that its a memory problem to me- if not a simple disk-read error.

Good luck!

Hope to hear back from you,
