xp recognizes my external hard drive by it does not show up in my computer. It is formatted and has information on it. When I right click my computer and go into disk management xp sees the hard drive but it does not have a volume letter.

Does the drive work correctly on another pc?

unplug and plug it into another one of your usb posts

hi dcoatsjr.
experienced a problem like that once. please do the following.
access disk management and select that drive. Then change the drive letter to one that isn't already taken either by a network drive or any other drive on your PC. i believe it should work.
I had the same problem after someone mapped a new network drive and no USB disks could be accessed .

When I right click the drive it does not give me the option to change drive letter. Do you think there might be a problem because the drive was formatted on a vista machine? I used the drive to back up my wifes computer and then I took Vista off of her computer.

Thanks for any help
