okay so i have multiple copies of xp home and pro, and on the computer i am
currently building i have been running into a major problem, every time i
install xp home edition sp2 it goes through the whole instalation process
smoothly, and then with the final reboot it hangs on the windows xp loading
screen, then after 2 minutes or so it just restarts then goes to the windows
didnt load properly screen. from there it will not load any of the safe boot
choices and it will just continue to restart if you try to load windows
normally.

Now if i just install a copy of windows xp home edition sp1 i have no
problems, it installs smoothly and boots up and runs as it normally would.

The computer itself is all brand new except for the cd drives are older. I
have also installed the sp2 onto the same type of computer before with no
problems.
i am completley baffled as to what the problem is.

any response is greatly appreciated !
thanks

have u used the same drives on all the pcs? sometimes it might be wiser to use newer drives or at least update the drivers for the drives u already have before using sp2.

can u print screen the whole msg and pop it on this forun. sometimes it can be a big shot in the darkwith these things. if i cant rectify it i know a man who can.

I too had this problem and after oh about 12 hours of re-instaling I had a thought. This worked for me and I hope it does for you.

Step one: goto http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=049C9DBE-3B8E-4F30-8245-9E368D3CDB5A&displaylang=en
on the right side is the download button. THIS IS SP2!!! save it to the drive you will NOT be formatting for the new windows install. Or burn it to CD

Step Two: turn off power  unplug the network cable

Step Three: turn on Computer with Xp bootable cd in drive and format the drive you want XP on.

Step Four: install XP and then Install SP 2 from the other drive or the cd you burned.

This worked for me and it worked great. Hope it works for you.. now... AWAY I GO .. to reinstall the rest of my crap.
