Greetings,
I have a computer problem. The problem started a couple of months ago when I went to log on to Google. Instead of going to that page, it redirected me to a different page that appeared to be Google but every site was a different porn or gambling listing.

I didn't retain the name of that site. Duh. Now, when I open a web site and double click to open something from that page, a new page starts to appear but doesn't continue loading.

In reading a note in one of your other forums, it suggested downloading and running hijackthis. I did so and here is my log.

Can you please give me some guidance from here?
Thanks.

There have been quite some trojans and worms out there that could modify your hosts file and other files to be active to benefit the attacker/spammer.

I advice going to symantec.com and checking out some of their information about this. Good chance norton antivirus now has these trojans and worms listed in their database.

There are also alternatives like the cleaner and spybot search & destroy programs that specificly focus on trojan/worms/spybot removal.

According to the HJT log excerpt quoted above, this is your biggest problem: HuntBar. Apparently, this is a fairly nasty drive-by ActiveX install that Spybot-S&D and Ad-aware might not be able to get rid of. The link does give manual removal instuctions, though -- but it doesn't look easy...

Yes ...the manual removals are rarely easy.

Please download and run this program :-

http://www.merijn.org/files/cwshredder.zip

THEN

Please Download and install SpyBot,

http://security.kolla.de/

click the online tab to search for and download the updates, then shut down and relaunch SpyBot.

Go to the Settings tab > File Sets, and uncheck 'System Internals' and 'Tracks' .
These aren't needed for our present purpose, and you can always experiment with them later on.

Finally, after closing down Internet Explorer, click 'Check for problems', and have SpyBot remove all it finds 'Fix selected problems'

you may have to run spybot more than once to clear everything

Remove everything pre-ticked in Red

-------
That should clean most of it up...

Then post a new log and we'll take out what's left manualy.

Hi Dani,
My lingo may not be exact enough. When I'm in a website and I double click to open a file (even if I'm in e-mail and try to open an attachment) in a new window, the window frame appears but nothing loads.

Thanks,

Thanks Michael,
I opted to continue on with the guidance from steam as I am pretty new to all this and can use all the help available.

I did run the spybot and it sure found a lot of items.

Hi steam,
Thanks for the assistance so far. I was out of town a few days and am now back at it.

I've done as outlined. This has helped quite a bit as we can now open e-mail attachments such as jpeg files whereas we couldn't beforehand. It's still having trouble when on the web and trying to open up a new page (when it opens into another window).

Any other suggestions?
Thanks,
Gerry

By the way, this is the latest log from hijack this.
Forgot to post it earlier.
Thanks,
Gerry

Greetings again.

Good news. I found a link to a repair on another website. Here it is. If anyone else is having a similar problem to what I have gone through, give this a shot.

Thanks again for the assistance.
Gerry
