Hi Everyone,
I have an annoying problem, IE8 opens just after Windows has loaded. Also,I would like to stop the BIOS POST screens from loading before Windows. I did a Windows repair recently because the computer was so slow, then after that I got the BIOS POST loading and IE8 after Windows Loads.

I have downloaded Hijack this, if someone could look at it for me, I would appreciate it very much. Also how do I upload it, can't see any instructionss.

I have tried to stop IE from opening, by going to msconfig and took it out of there but made no difference. Also, I did a reset on IE still comes back but it doesn't fully load, just the toolbars and in he body just blank.
Thank you,
Joan

hi, open start ,check the startup folder for reference to IE or a program looking to go online ,you need to use a file hosting site to upload a file ,so just copy and past the content hijackthis log to a new post

I would like to stop the BIOS POST screens from loading before Windows

you need to enter the bios/setup when booting up the computer[usuall f2 or DEL key to enter it ,] and turn on quickboot,

Thank you for responding. I will copy and paste the log.
Also, I have been into the bios and made quick boot but made no difference.
thank you Joan.

Here is the hijackthis log;

don't see anything out of line in the log ,did you check the startup folder in START ,

yes, thank you, I thought IE was supposed to be there when I click the start button,it's visible on my windows 7 (this one) when I click start. HoweverI deleted it from "all programs" and now it's not appearing on start up.I am just installing Spybot S & D free version 1.6.2, I used to have that a couple of years ago and was told in a forum to get rid of it. the only thing I'ev been using is Malwarebytes, Avast, spyware blaster on my XP machines but on win7 Windows Defender came with the machine. I'm a little worried about putting spybot on my win7 computer. I don't understand tea timer it used to annoy me when I had it before, so if you know anything about that I would appreciate your advice.I'm still getting a black screen on boot up with my XP computer, mainly when I do a restart and I have to take out the power cord and wait for some time then it boots to the screen "last know good config" and "start windows normally". sometimes it opens into windows if I click on the latter and sometimes it just goes to black screen. Not sure what to do.
any advice.
thank you,
Joan

I

Hello, Joan.
"However I deleted it (IE8) from "all programs" and now it's not appearing on start up"
-that's a bit heavy-handed, the problem will lie with something that is calling it, or some entry that is starting it. In XP in the Docs n Setts\You folder there is a folder called Start Menu, may be an entry there, but I don't know why anything would put one there. That is what caper is referring to.
This Browser Manager you have... it's starting from a very weird place, AppInit_DLLS. That key is usually the preserve of kernel stuff and antivirus. What is Browser Manager, what does it do?
I'd put IE8 back if it's still in your Recycle Bin. You could try restarting Hijackthis, scanning and putting a checkmark against:
O20 - AppInit_DLLs: c:\docume~1\alluse~1\applic~1\browse~1\22580~1.182{16cdf~1\brwmngr.dll
...and pressing Fix Checked.
Then restart.
I would not use Sybot myself.. you have good coverage with MBAM [the best antispyware tool] and Defender.
You run your compy as an Administrator, don't you? Otherwise that Appinit_DLLS entry would not have been made. Maybe you installed something, and that item piggy-backed in.

Have you checked the startup ?? If it is opening on start up, there must be a short cut for IE in start up. If exists, remove it.

I had a look in Doc & settings on my XP machine, there is nothing there about IE., there is a folder for "Programs",shortcut for "Set Program Access and Defaults", "Windows Catalog", "Windows Update. When I click On the folder "Programs", it opens up all the software on the computer, plus an Accessories folder and an Administative tools folder.

I went back to "start" and all programs and IE8 is back listed there as I thought it should be. I installed Spybot because I read (after I sent the log) that people should try to help themselves (on this forum) by having spybot and running that's why I have installed it on my XP desktop, the one that is giving me trouble at the moment. I don't have Defender on it that's on this one win7. I ran spybot on my win7 machine and it found 42 things. Some were PUPsc and sweetIM. I let it get rid of them. Now I'm worried Spybot will harm this machine win7.
Anyway, getting back to the original problem, my winxp desktop. As I said IE is not opening on boot up now so all seems well there. Just a black screen on boot up.

I don't know about the browser manager you mentioned, or what it does. So, now that IE is fine should I still run hijack this and delete or fix those entries you have mentioned?.

BTW, could you PLease tell me this. Three years ago a techician put a new motherboard in that windows XP desktop, it's an MSI motherboard, so even though it's an Acer does it mean it's still an Acer or a no name machine?. I want to get rid of the BIOS POST screen on boot up, but everytime I try to change things in the BIOS it doesn't seem to change anything or save any changes. Fast boot or whatever it's called is enabled but the POST screens.. 3 of them still show on boot up. That is when it DOES boot up, most of the time I get a black screen and have to shut down, take power cord out and wait. Then it goes to that dreaded "sorry for the inconvenience", start windows normally etc., sometimes when I click on that it just freezes, and sometimes it works, sometimes I let the numbers run through and it opens to windows but again it may freeze too. I don't know what is causing the black screen. I have it running now because I was able to start it by pressing "start windows normally", but as I said that doesn't always work. I haven't run the log file again, should I?.
Sorry for the long post.
Regards, Joan.

If it is opening on start up, there must be a short cut for IE in start up

,it doesn't nessarly need to be a IE shourt cut ,it cold be another programs icon ,that's calling up IE to connect to the web

and if you changed the motherboard and it was not the same as the one Acer had in it ,then no its not really an Acer anymore ,in the bios look for disable MSI logo on bootup something like that ,

IE8 is not opening on start up anymore as I said in my last post,There is no IE8 entry at all in start up when I look at doc and settings, it's just in all programs from the start menu and is not a shortcut, there is a shortcut on my desktop but as I said it's not opening on start up anymore. When the new motherboard was installed 3 years ago it was done by a technician so I'm not sure if the original motherboard was an MSI one, but from what he said at the time I don't think it's the same as the original for an Acer. I suppose I could ring them to find out. I'll check the BIOS as you suggested, that's if I can get past that darn black screen.BTW, how do I know who has helped me when no names appear or am I missing something?
thanks again,
Joan.

Joan, I put in a Whoops! post, or at least I thought I did... it aint showing.
The folder of interest is Docs n Setts\You\Start Menu\Programs\Startup. Any entry in there will start with the system, same for any in the corresponding All Users sub-folder.
All moot now, though. Information only, if you have deleted IE8 it's hardly likely to start.
Spybot: "Now I'm worried Spybot will harm this machine win7." It won't harm it, that's up to how you use it.
Your machine is now an MSI machine, ACER has been demoted to a tag on the case and probably an OEM product key for your installation. That is important...likely being OEM, your licence is restricted to that machine, but after a year limited numbers of parts can be exchanged at any one time without interfering with activation.
MSI's AMI/Award BIOS: the Quickboot option on Advanced BIOS Features page will only bypass some memory testing functions, and perhaps reduce information display times. If you select Full Screen Logo display the same procedures run but are hidden. F10 for Save option.
As I wrote before, your Browser Manager is starting from a fraught and unsafe place, the AppInit_DLLS reg key. It could well be the cause of your startup problems [the black screen is a Windows loading failure]. Putting it probably too simply, that loading point ensures that brwmngr.dll's code is injected into Microsoft's user32.dll, and hence into many of the processes that use user32.dll [which is just about all of those that run, and not just at startup].
The use of that key is contentious for that reason, only the best written software should use it, eg perhaps components of your AV service.
I'd check it and remove it with HijackThis [there will be a backup made]. It is NOT malware, there's just a chance that it is interfering, that's all. You can restore it easily if it is not the cause [Main Menu or Config button, Backups, select and Restore].
If the failing to start persists then please run this after an updated MBAM quick scan [present that log if it detects anything]:
==Download OTL from http://oldtimer.geekstogo.com/OTL.exe to your Desktop.

  • Double click on the icon to start the application.
  • Select Scan All Users, Minimal Output, Standard Registry ALL, check both LOP and Purity boxes, leave other sections as they are.
  • Press Run Scan.
The scan will take maybe 5 minutes; 2 notepads will present [saved to the place from where you ran OTL.exe] - please post both.

Many thanks for all that information. The darn machine won't boot to anything now, but if I can get it going I will do all that you have outlined. IE8 doesn't open on start up but will open when i click the icon so that part seems fine, just cannot boot to anything now. Will run hijackthis again and rmove that key. I will come back as soon as I have tried your suggestions. I've just about had this machine.
Many thanks,
Joan.

I see. Try Safe Mode. While in there use Disk Management to see that all partitions are healthy. Hijackthis will run from there. Because we are pretty much in the dark with the problem, it would not hurt to schedule a chkdsk run also. From a cmd console [go Start, and Run: cmd] enter: chkdsk C: /f -it will run upon reboot.
And if you have the installation cd then running from that cmd window..
sfc /scannow -would not hurt, either. Just to check your windows files are up to scratch; errors do creep in in any system.

I tried for almost 3 days but nothing I did would boot up the computer, just black screen no lights nothing. I was telling my daughter in law about it and she said she knew a retired technician who has helped her so she asked him tocome have a look. He took the machine late yesterday and brought it back today....all fixed. I couldn't believe my eyes and he didn't charge me anything, couldn't believe that either but he wouldn't take anything. I asked him what was wrong and he wouldn't go into detail, just said a few settings had to be changed. Heaven knows how he got it going but it's working well now. I did want that splash screen about the BIOS to not be there but he said it's because there is an MSI motherboard and it's normal. He just told me to leave it alone.I suppose because it's all working I will, it goes to Windows very quickly.
Anyway, just letting you know all is well, and I was about to throw the darn thing out I was so frustrated.
Many thanks for all your help. I really appreciate the time you spent trying to help me.
Best regards,
Joan.
