I need help! My computer is acting funny. I've ran virus scan and spyware scan and came up with nothing on those. What's happening is when I click on a link in an email or on a webpage it opens it in that window instead of another window. Also when I copy something and then try to paste it nothing happens. Can you help?

Thanks,
Sheila

Hi Sheila when did you notice this happening.

Is it possible to do a system restore to an earlier time?

Hi Sheila when did you notice this happening.

Is it possible to do a system restore to an earlier time?

accessories > system tools > system restore.

It started a couple of days ago. I'll do what you suggested and see if it helps.

Thanks,
Sheila

Hi,
I just tried to do the system restore but it was turned off. So it wouldn't let me go back to restore. What do I do now?

Hi sheila it's a shame you can't do a restore. (Do you have administrator privileges?)
Can you try installing a different web browser, and tell me if you still get the same problems.

http://www.firefox2.cc/uk/

It did the same thing with the different browser. What else can I do?

Thanks,
Sheila

um. ummmm. we talking IE? isn't this a setting that the web page maker does? in opera it is a setting you can make so that a link will open a new page in the browser. but in IE it is up to the page designer. I think. easily wrong here... but you can rclick the link and select to open in a new window... or just press the shift key as you click the link...
if all windows opened in a new window it would stuff the back button on yer mouse, now wouldn it?
go easy on me, i've been on a long holiday, n me brains gelled.
try it. open a web site, click on a benign ad like from a bank or similar - it'll most likely open in a new page. now click a link on that orig web page n i think you'll find it will most likely open in the same window. click the back button, click the same link with the shift key. now your back button will not work. same as with the bank ad. no history for the new window, see?

Hi,
I've got some error messages that come up when I reboot my computer.
Could not find:
c:\windows\system32\fkwrpabkw\winlogon.exe

Could not run or load:
c:\windows\system32\fkwrpabkw\winlogon.exe

Could not find:
file:///program%20files/motive/tuner/vendors/verizon/content/template/driven-dev/BroadBandAsst/profileCheckerCallin.htm

I also have ads that keep poping up on my computer from a site
rond.stardoors.com
I have blocked it in my blocker program but it doesn't help.

Can you help?

Thanks,
Sheila

yeah sblanton, it sounds like something installed a spoofed windows logon screen (its most likely malicious software which steals your passwords so id advise you to be careful)

go to run and type sfc /scannow and see if that helps. BACKUP FIRST!

Hi,
I tried to run the sfc/scannow and it said it couldn't find the file and to make sure I put and the right address. So what do I do now?

Thanks,
Sheila

i hope you tried to run sfc /scannow.... note the space? sfc is the file [a process..], scannow is a parameter that controls the process's operation.

Hi,
I ran the scan and it ask for me to put in my windows xp cd. I did that and it continued the scan. When it finished it just went off. I didn't give me any kind of message or anything. Is that what it's suppose to do? I don't know if it fixed anything yet or not.

Thanks,
Sheila

yep. What it does is check the protected files in windows for correctness - if it finds errors or mismatches it copies in a new file from the cd if it needs to. Finished, it closes. No fanfare.
Did you note my post on links? You can script in HTML how a link should work, but you can force IE and other browsers to behave how you wish by rclick context menu and other default behaviour options.... Now how is copynpaste going?

Hi,
The scan didn't work. When I restarted my computer I still got those error messages. So now what do I do? I've ran my virus scan and spyware and adware programs and it says I don't have anything on my computer. Please help me if you can it's driving me crazy!!!

Sheila

Oops. Please do these things in this order [but post all the logs only when you finish...]

==Download this temp file cleaner from http://www.atribune.org/ccount/click.php?id=1 --click in the download window to run it, and when ATF Cleaner opens go Select all, and then Empty Selected.
Next click Firefox [if you have that browser..] at the top, Select All again, and Empty Selected again. Follow that procedure also if you have Opera.
Close ATF.
[If you wish, save ATF Cleaner to your desktop or a cleaning folder somewhere as it is a fairly useful tool for occasional use.]

Is this the anti-spyware pgm you ran? If so, I'd like to see the log... otherwise:
==GET AVG antispyware 7.5 here.. http://free.grisoft.com/doc/5390/lng/us/tpl/v5 -the link is almost at the bottom of the page , avgas 7.5.0.50. Install it and UPDATE it.
Start AVG a-s 7.5; under Scanner/ Settings set Recommended actions to Quarantine, and run the scan. Save the log file and only then click Apply all actions. Post the log file.

== Get hijackthis: http://216.180.233.162/~merijn/files/HijackThis.exe
-install it to a new folder alongside your program files and then rename the Hijackthis.exe to imabunny.exe.
-in that folder start HijackThis by dclicking the .exe; now close ALL other applications and any open windows including the explorer window containing HijackThis.
-Click the Scan and Save a Logfile button. Post the log here.

Actually, I suggest you start a new thread over in viruses n spyware forum with this info..

Hi,
IE couldn't open the page for me to download the new version of AVG. There was a dns error in the address bar. Help!

Sheila

Here it is.

Run this thing, save the log file and post it here.

Here's the deal:

1st of all, turn on the firewall (that is if you're not using one)

It seem s that you do have a nasty in there. It is called "Fuzzy Algorithmcheck".

I suggest that you do the following:

Hit ctrl-alt-del (task manager) click on "processes" tab and look for (sort it by name, it's easier):
ipwins.exe

There could be also 2 instances of "winlogon.exe".Clean one is of size 536K (mem usage). If you see 2 of those and one is bigger or smaller than 536K, kill it (right-click on it and select "end process")

After you have killed those proceses, run the hijackthis again and do the following (you have to do EXACTLY what I say, otherwise you might render your windows useless):

As, I said, run the hijackthis. No need for saving logfile.
Find and check these lines:
(checkboxes are on the right)

F3 - REG:win.ini: load=C:\WINDOWS\system32\fkwrpabkw\winlogon.exe

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [IpWins] C:\Program Files\Ipwindows\ipwins.exe

O2 - BHO: AutoFill helper object - {2A7ECB62-99B9-45DE-9028-69DCC5ADF698} - C:\WINDOWS\Downloaded Program Files\AxFreshStartBanking.dll

Now click on the "fix checked" and confirm it.

After that, restart your PC and run the hijackthis again and post a new log here.

P.S.
It is possible that some processes would keep reappearing. That means that the trojan is active and is monitoring the activities. In that case it would be a good idea to run a virus check with bitdefender. (download the 30 day trial version)

Hi,
I ended the process for the ipwins.exe. I tried to end the process for the winlogon.exe because it was 1,108K. That was the only one on there and it wouldn't let me. It said that was critical. I didn't know if it was the bad one or not because it was bigger than 536K, but it's the only one on there.
I checked and fixed the items on the hijackthis list. I restarted my computer and didn't get 2 of the error messages that was on there when I restart, but I'm still getting the other one:

It says it can't find this file:
file:///program%20files/motive/tuner/vendors/verizon/content/template/driven-dev/BroadBandAsst/profilecheckercallin.html

Here is the other hijackthis log:

Oh, yeah, I forgot to tell you that I have the firewall turned on.

hmmm...

Seems that the "verzion" software that you're using is slightly corrupted. I suggest that you uninstall it and reinstall it. That would fix the error message that you receive upon each reboot.

.

There's no need for another thread. Mod can simply move this one into more apropriate forum. (Viruses, Spyware and other Nasties)

sblanton.... sorry, but i cannot help laughing!! That is a superb example of a hosts file to block most AS, AV, online scanner and cleaner sites!! I dunno quite where to start cos you have a load of problems there, so we'll clear a bit of space first..[you should have followed ALL my advice and taken this log over to viruses n spyware forums and started a new thread- no matter now]
Anyway..... do these things in this order.

Please download the MsnVirRem pgm from this page [heh! they can't block em all...]: http://www.thespykiller.co.uk/index.php?action=tpmod;dl=item9
* First close any other programs you have running as this will require a reboot
* Double click MsnVirRem.exe to run it
* Once open, click the button labelled "Search and Destroy" *Your computer will now be scanned for Infected Files*
* When scanning is finished you will be prompted to reboot only if infected, Click OK
* Now click the "REBOOT" Button.
* After the Reboot, you WILL receive file not found errors (usually 4) please acknowledge them and continue. * A Message should popup from MsnVirRem; if not, double click the program again and it will finish. Please Post the contents of C:\msnvirrem.log.

Next: ComboFix.
===Download this file: http://www.techsupportforum.com/sectools/sUBs/ComboFix.exe
...or from here: http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe
-- to run it dclick combofix.exe and follow the prompts to start it. When finished, it will produce a log - post that log in your next reply.
A word of caution - do not touch your mouse/keyboard until the scan has completed. The scan will temporarily disable your desktop, and if interrupted may leave your desktop disabled. If this occurs, please reboot to restore the desktop.
Next is a cleaner... ATF Cleaner
===Download this temp file cleaner from http://www.atribune.org/ccount/click.php?id=1 --click in the download window to run it, and when ATF Cleaner opens go Select all, and then Empty Selected.
Now you should be able to get AVG!!
===GET AVG antispyware 7.5 here.. http://free.grisoft.com/doc/5390/lng/us/tpl/v5 -the link is almost at the bottom of the page , avgas 7.5.0.50. Install it and UPDATE it.
Start AVG a-s 7.5; under Scanner/ Settings set Recommended actions to Quarantine, and run the scan. Save the log file and only then click Apply all actions. Post the log file.
Okay, post those three logs, plus a fresh Hijackthis log.

yeah, chaky, it may as well run on here now... happy to leave it up to the bosses..

Oh, why not fix some more while you are at it?
Open Control Panel, add/remove pgms and uninstall IPwindows.
When you finally run hijackthis, first off do a Scan Only, and place checkmarks against all of the following [if they still exist] and then press Fix Checked:
