When initally restarting the connection (booting up, modem -> router -> desktop) I am connected to the internet. Within minutes the connection is lost.

When viewing Network Connections initially I see only Local Area Connection (with strong connection)

When connection cuts out I see "Internet Connection" showing that the Gateway connection is not made (?)

When I'm connected only with modem the connection is fine and never lost.

When I do a hard reset of the router my settings don't reset.

When I do a hard reset of the router my settings don't reset.

do you do this with the router plugged in to power outlet ,if not try it holding the reset in till all lights turn off and then back on !

Thank you for such a quick response.

I was able to reset the router as instructed.

Having done so I found my self in the setup page and when applying the settings see that I don't appear to be acquiring an IP address.

After shutting down and booting back up in the proper sequence I can log into the router again, but soon after all connection is lost.

The Gateway conncetion showed up at one point sending and receiving 0 or few packets. After a few minutes I couldn't even few the status of the connection. After restart the LAN conncetion was minimal as well.

I'm back to being connect through modem only without issue.

I have used the Netgear WGT624 router successfully until this issue suddenly surfaced last week.

I guess it is possible something went wrong with the router.
after reset ,the default settings should be enough to make connection through router, with out setting it up,mine is anyway [belkin router ], as long as the cat45 cables are connected properly .

I swapped my Belkin router out and put in a Draytek because I was losing the internet ADSL connexion on the router. Not because I suspected the Belkin, but because of the greater diagnostic functionality of the Draytek.

Anyway, the problem turned out to be the shitty service from the ADSL supplier. I now mainly use a cable DSL link at 20Mb - absolutely no problems. I'll leave the ADSL contract as soon as I can give notice under the contract.

So if you're, say 2 or 3 of miles from your exchange and perhaps there's a lot of pole strung cable, there's a fair chance you're having the problem I got even though it wasn't like that before.

Your second post was a bit confusing forme as it wasn't absolutely clear what wasn't connecting to what.

if I've caught your right, sometimes you can log in to the Netgear as Administrator and sometimes not. If you ever can, then when ytou can't it's the Netgear not in a state of grace which is rectified by rebooting it.

Again, if I've interpreted your note correctly, after you reset the Netgear, you no longer get through to the internet. maybe you have to set up your PPPoE credentials again. Have you checked that they are there with all the correct MTU values set, etc?

everything is connected properly, I have connectivity for a short period of time then it's gone. The router never does establish an IP address and the gateway connection (which was never needed or used previously is not connected).

What surprises me is that it worked for 2 months and suddenly doesn't. Could there be a firewall issue from an automatic windows upgrade?

nah - it's not a firewall thing, IMO.

You said:

2/
What connectivity do yu have? To the router or to the internet? If it's the internet, what do the lights on each device say when you've lost connectivity?
What model is the modem and is it's internet light showing?

3/
What happens if you connect your PC directly to the ethernet port on the modem? If all the right lights are up on the modem and you can't get onto the internet when directly connected, see at the end of this reply.

4/
When you then try to connect to the internet via the router and then through the modem, what does your connexion icon say when you pass the mouse over it?

5/
When you have the router connected to the modem, can you get onto the router's Admin function?

If you can't get onto the router go to the CMD screen and type the following commands:

IPCONFIG /Release
IPCONFIG /Renew

Try again. If this still doesn't work type:

NETSH WINSOCK RESET

None of the above will harm your system in any way; they will reset your IP table and the sockets that windows users.

Please be very specific in your answers. As you can see, ambiguity leads to a lot of questions without resolution!

services.msc
type that into run ,when you get there scroll to the bottom of services and make sure that the service , wireless zero config ,is running ,double click on it and make sure its set to automatic

And the winsock reset suggestion?

Also both of:
IPCONFIG /FLUSHDNS
IPCONFIG /REGISTERDNS

And maybe I do need to eat my firewall words. Is Firewall turned off for the moment? Both in Wndows and Anti-Virus?

When you next do your IPCONFIG /ALL, could you please p[ost the full entry under Ethernet Adaptor Local Area Connection? The IP Address should not, of course, be 0.0.0.0

The Winsock reset had no noticeable effect.
It said a restart was required, but nothing's changed.

WINOSCK RESET required a restart, but did not change anything.

The windows firewall is off, but for some unknown reason I can't open the McAfee security center.

I uninstalled McAfee, and that didn't change a thing.

There is a "lock" icon that shows on my Local Area Connection Icon for whatever that's worth.

I'm at a loss. I appreciate all the suggestions. It seems odd to have come on so randomly.

I was able to change the settings so that the firewall was turned off (the Local Area Connection was listed as an exception in the advanced settings).

Here's what I got when the router was hooked up....

Still no connectivity via the router (all the lights are good etc). The Local Area Connection reads connected, the Internet Connection (Gateway) however has limited connectivity.

I appreciate all the suggestions.

One thing with the router set up is that Netgear suggest that Comcast would have provided a domain name (work group) which they didn't. I've used the Comcast/Router connection since moving here Sept. 1 and the issue came out of the blue.
