Hello,

I have a pretty peculiar problem. The internet connection at my house connects fine on any of our laptops/desktops. But I can't seem to browse online or play games that require authentication or use msn . BUT(once again), I CAN stream online radio from my Itunes, I can download torrents, I can use ventrilo. This is really puzzelling me.

Thanks for all your help !

Could you please be specific with the URL of the sites that you are unable to browse, and also what is the error you see when you try to access these sites.
At this point it seems that the upstream device to which you computer is connected(modem or router) is blocking https traffic which is used for secured communication.

All urls are non responsive. I cannot connect to any website whatsoever

Check your DNS settings. What are you using?
START - RUN - CMD - type IPCONFIG /ALL and see

Check if you get any resolution at all.
START - RUN - NSLOOKUP - enter a site i.e. www.google.com and it should spit back the ip address for the site. If it doesn't then there is some issue there.

In your browser, check to see if you accidentally set it to use a Proxy in TOOLS - OPTIONS - CONNECTIONS - LAN SETTINGS.

well i know it isn't my computer since all computers in my house are experiencing the same problem. When i run IPCONFIG /ALL i get the following

Media Disconnected status means that the cable is bad or the upstream device is turned off.

Try the following...

1- Connect a single computer directly to the modem or router (use a Cross Over Cable)
2- Have DHCP turned on and do a ipconfig /release and ipconfig/renew , check if PC is able to get an ip address
3- ipconfig /all - note down the ip address, subnet mask, default gateway and DNS address
4- Try to ping the ip address 4.2.2.2 from the command prompt
5- If you are getting reply that means PC is going online
6- Try to access website using the URL if you are unable to go online then that means the problem is with the DNS server , have DNS server address configured manually to 4.2.2.2
7- If you are unable to ping 4.2.2.2 then try pinging the default gateway ,able to ping- that means ISP is blocking the internet traffic , unable to ping- hardware issues - either with physical connection or upstream device

NOTE:
-If PC is not getting an ip address when DHCP is turned on then that means your modem is not enabled to be the DHCP server
-contact your ISP get the static ip details and configure it manually and this should work

The Wireless is disconnected, the Wired link is not.

BTW, you don't need to edit out addresses from a private range ... just an fyi.

the big question is this: What is DNS Servers 10.100.2.1? is 10.100.2.1 your router's internal LAN ip? I would think yes since that's the usual way for consumer routers to work.

I can offer 2 sugestions.
#1 - On the router, check to see what it's current WAN config looks like. It should dhcp an IP from the ISP along with DNS info.

#2 - (This is what I do) for a small home network, assign a manual DNS server for the router in its DHCP setup. So instead of handing out its own ip, have it hand out a public dns ip like the opendns servers.
208.67.222.222
208.67.220.220
http://www.opendns.com

That way when your internal hosts get a dhcp address from your router, your router will assign the opendns ips as dns servers, then your hosts should start resolving FQDNs as they should.

When you test nslookup again, the server ip should now be the opendns ips and the www.google.com lookup should succeed.
