i am a newcomer, i have a basic questions, i already read one book of openGL, couldn't understand well.

my question is how to create a cube and map a texture to it, anyone give me some explanation of work principle to handle this? thanks a lot. the texture can be any type of image, for example jpeg, tif? and can i map one image to part of face of cube? thanks a lot.
