just signed up and this is first thread.I am currently learning java and as a means to this i am writing the mastermind game in java.Can anyone point me in the right direction regarding getting the board facr on the grid and manipulating it.

Well, you don't say where you are in the learning process, but wanting to do a graphical game is a bit beyond the basics. I'd recommend something text-based from the console before you get into Swing and 2D graphics.
