What is the difference between SEO and SEM?

SEO (search engine optimization) is the process where you ensure that your content is optimized for Google's bots to crawl and index, make sure that you have lots of incoming backlinks, etc.

PPC (pay per click) is when you purchase traffic through programs such as Google AdWords.

SEM (search engine marketing) is an umbrella term used to describe getting traffic from search engines, either organically (via SEO) or via PPC.
