I am a tech novice, so I'll need a bit of help here . . . I want to upgrade the RAM in my Compaq X1000 notebook from 512 mb to 1 gb or more. I have 2 slots which are both full (256 mb each). I am prepared to buy one stick (1 gb) to upgrade, but every site I've visited recommends pc2100 RAM. My system is running pc2700. Isn't the pc2700 faster? Why would I want to take a step backward? Any thoughts?

I think you must be right. I used a system check on the Crucial site which suggested that I am running the pc2700. Not sure what that's about . . . All the original specs are for 2100, I believe. Thanks for the guidance.
