Sorry to keep on posting. Since my earlier post, it looks as if my PC might soon crash as it did just a month ago, when I had to reintall Windows ME. I can barely write this post without being interrupted by multiple popups. If soeone could check my HJT sometime today I'd be most appreciative.

Many thanks in advance, and for all the help I've gotten in the past.

To remove trojans there is a tool which needs to be downloaded and run.

1. Please download Stinger and save it to your desktop

2. Double-click on the stinger.exe file and open the tool

3. Choose your entire hard drive to scan.

4. Choose Scan Now

5. Stinger will fix anything that it finds

6. Click the File menu and select Save report to file

7. Post the log file results here in this thread.

Reboot to SAFE mode to delete files
How to start computer in safe mode

Please delete your temporary files by deleting all files and folders that are in those folders (do not delete the temp folder itself) like for example
C:\WINDOWS\Temp\
C:\Temp\
C:\Documents and Settings\username\Local Settings\Temp\
Also delete your Temporary Internet Files, be sure to also select delete all offline content.

Do a virus scan Please do an online scan, 2 would be better,

Micro World http://www.mwti.net/antivirus/free_utilities.asp
Trend Micro http://housecall.trendmicro.com/housecall/start_corp.asp

Make sure that you choose "fix" or "clean".

.

Download then unzip and run CWShredder to clean up clicking "FIX" to have it remove all it finds.

CWShredder available from these places :-

http://www.aluriasoftware.com/tools/cwshredder.zip
Or this as a full download without any unzipping required
http://www.downloads.subratam.org/CWShredder.exe
http://www.spywareinfo.com/downloads/tools/CWShredder.exe

We have found that some of the CWS infections can be removed better from safe mode, rather than normal mode.
To get to safe mode use the F8 key while booting the machine. Detailed instructions from :-

Then please do this since it’s better to use automated tools to get rid of the bad stuff use these 2 programs first before doing the final cleaning with HJT

First use Spybot S&D. (Version 1.3)
Spybot
Unzip, and update. Install the updates and run. Delete all that it marks in red.
Reboot

Then it’s time for Ad-Aware
Ad-Aware
Install and update by using the globe icon. Restart your computer and run Ad-Aware.
Press scan now and select drives and/or partitions to be scanned. When done select all and click next. Remove all checked items and then reboot your computer.

Please go to this page and read the instructions for how to configure Spybot S&D & Ad-Aware
How To Setup Spybot SD and Ad-Aware

If needed !!!!!!
Reboot and post a new HiJackThis log. You need an updated version of Hijackthis which you can get from HERE

Then post a HJT log as a reply to this topic.

Thank you for your response.

I have tried to remedy some of the situation and these are my current problems:

I tried to access Trend Micro and get the latest Windows update. Both of these, however, say that my "current settings prohibit running ActiveX controls on this page." Neither Trend Micro nor Windows Updates indicates how they want ActiveX to be configured.

I also got the latest HJT version as directed. It works, as far as I can tell, and has its own folder, but still tells me that it "appears to have been started from a temporary folder," etc.

I have ME, and use AVG and Zone Alarm. Spybot works, but when I try to reinstall Ad-Aware, it tells me that it has "caused an error in <unknown>." Then: "Exception ERead Error in Modul AD-AWARE.EXE bei 00021FOB" followed by a comment in German.

At one point very recently, Windows Media Player decided to delete itself. If necessary I can live without it, especially since I had a lot of problems around it just before I had to wipe out and reinstall Windows (with help, of course) in February. It was a heartbreaking experience. However, I gave up Norton after that, with great relief, when I was advised to use AVG instead.

I include my HJT log:

Hijack is in a temp folder ,
,,,,,,,,,,,
Your copy of HijackThis needs to be in a folder of it's own. When HJT fixes anything, it makes backups of the original files in the folder it is in. Since Temporary folders are emptied now and then (the files are DELETED), it would not be a good idea to have your backups there. Those backups would be VITAL to restoring your system if something went wrong in the FIX process!

1. Please go to you're 'My Documents' folder, right-click and select 'New > Folder' then name the folder 'HJT'.

2. Copy and paste HijackThis.exe to the new folder.

3. Close ALL windows except HJT

4. SCAN with HJT

5. POST the new log in this thread using 'Add Reply'

DO NOT MAKE ANY CHANGES OR CLICK "FIX CHECKED" UNTIL WE CHECK THE LOG, AS SOME OF THE FILES ARE LEGIT AND VITAL TO YOUR COMPUTER'S HEALTH

First check add and remove program and uninstall this if there MEDIA ACCESS
this is called a windowsup date adware vairent so im not sure but removing it it may fix your ability to go to windows updates ,

,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,
Have Hijack This fix the following by placing a check in the appropriate boxes and selecting fix checked. Make sure all browser and all Windows Explorer windows are closed before fixing.
You might want to print out or copy & paste to notePad , these instructions as you will need to close this browser window to fix with hijackthis !

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Media Access] C:\PROGRAM FILES\MEDIA ACCESS\MediaAccK.exe

this optional ,but suggested fix as its a rescorce hog and not needed in startup
O4 - Startup: Microsoft Office.lnk = C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\OSA9.EXE

O15 - Trusted IP range: 206.161.125.149

Now reboot into safe mode and delete the following files and folders if found .

C:\PROGRAM FILES\MEDIA ACCESS,,,,,,,,delete folder

to delete the above files and folder you will need to do the following
go to
Show hidden files & folders

"Fix Checked"...Reboot to SAFE mode to delete files
How to start computer in safe mode

reboot computer and post a new log
