scenario: trying to connect new laptop to office local area network.cannot access any shared resources on the LAN. I have looked in device manager and there is no NIC installed. How do i go about fixing this problem.

Install the drivers for your network card. If you go to start -- control panel -- system -- hardware -- device manager you should see a yellow icon in the hardware. Thats likely your NIC.

Hmmm, sometimes the thing gets disabled by mistake right cliking on the network icon the the time and it says not available.

Just enable it or maybe it is as sknake said.
