Hi everyone new to this, so please bear with me.

Who programs the bios chips ??

What language do they use ??

Can anyone with the right knowledge write a program or does it have to come from the manufacturer ??

Thats a start, thanx in advance

ok a: Bios chips are programmed by the chip makers, then customised by the mobo makers

b: Its done in hex/assembly lng

c: yes some people make their own software for it, however is done by flashing the chip to store then info. to the CMOS

thanx suroot,

Are bios programmers readily available or is it a very specialised area ??

Generally a specialised area, ie, the motherboard manufacturer writes the BIOS for the motherboard. But, the BIOS calls should all be available, so you can write kernel-level modules/functions that interact with the BIOS.

you'll find some sites that have comunities on 3rd party bios flashes, they seem to make bios updates for old boards, they also sometimes fix problems with some bios's before the manufacturers which is quite amusing, and yea, there's some people if you ask nicely will make a custom bios for you... i have never used any of these becuase i just dont trust them, however i know people who have used them and havn't complained, but the general rule with cmos chips is, if they arn't broken for heavens sake don't fiddle with it or your local pc doctor will shoot you.

I would like to have a computer show my logo/graphics file instead of the BIOS manufacturer's or the computer maker's (Dell, Gateway, etc.). Is this possible? Thanks, Felix

Actually the Bios are programmed by manufactures and basic machine language is used for initial programming but a programmer can also program it with computer high level languages with in using the operating system.

Bios can be programmed for running the specific operating system such as in early 1980s the bios which are used in Mac computer don't allow user to run microsoft OS or other OS.

But now Bios are programmed to a specific way and the OS which we are using are built on that specific principle or we can say universal principle to boot as computer runs.

Yes,you can change it but for that purpose you should be a best programmer with the knowledge of computer or machine basic operations which it uses at its start other wise you can also lost your computer by a small change.

Bios is the first program that runs when we start our PC
Bios are stored in EPROM(re programmable ROM)that is found in motherboard
usally motherboard manufactures use special hardware to flash the ROM
bios detects all the hardware parts connected to ur PC

i think assembly language is used in bios programming

I think some how my Boise pragram is gone! The tower runs and loads but my monitor is blank and its the same on different monitors. You can see and hear the tower doin its thing but thats all I really need so HELP here, thanks loads Colleen

If your BIOS was gone, it would not run or load, and it would display on your monitor as an error - BIOS checksum error and drop you to a prompt.

To fix it, you'd need to boot from a floppy and provide the correct BIOS and flash utility. Most BIOS chips have a small section which will enable someone to boot from a drive. I've never had to play with this, but it entails moving a jumper to certain pins. This web site has more info on that.

Your problem sounds more like the monitor, a loose wire, or the video card isn't seated properly or not functioning. If you hear the start up of windows, etc, it's most likly a loose wire somewhere.
