Hi - this is my first post so please let me know if I have done something incorrectly...

When I attempt to open any item in Control Panel I get this error: RUNDLL - Error in setupapi.dll. Missing entry:s - I appreciate any help that can be provided!

Note - I will be away from the PC all weekend so I probably won't be able to post again until Monday. I will try any fixes as soon as I can!

There might be some help here:registry fixes; I think the 5th one down might be of some help but, er, it is the registry file so back it up first.

Oh, and free advice is worth what you pay for it.

Thank you for the reply! I had already found the registry fix before posting to this forum. Unfortunately, it did not work. Are there any other ideas on how to resolve this issue?

Can you please do the following.

===============

Scan with HijackThis and then place a check next to all the following, if present:

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Page_URL = http://ie.redirect.hp.com/svs/rdr?TY...rio&pf=desktop
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Search_URL = http://ie.redirect.hp.com/svs/rdr?TY...rio&pf=desktop
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://ie.redirect.hp.com/svs/rdr?TY...rio&pf=desktop
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://ie.redirect.hp.com/svs/rdr?TY...rio&pf=desktop

F2 - REG:system.ini: UserInit=userinit.exe,C:\WINDOWS\system32\ntos.exe,

O4 - Startup: Compaq Organize.lnk = ?

O20 - Winlogon Notify: abc32reg - C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Documents\Settings\abc32.dll (file missing)
O20 - Winlogon Notify: WLCtrl32 - C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\WLCtrl32.dll

Now, close all instances of Internet Explorer and any other windows you have open except HiJackThis, click "Fix checked".

===============

Locate and delete the following item(s), if present. Make sure you are able to view system and hidden files/ folders:

files...

C:\WINDOWS\system32\ntos.exe
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\WLCtrl32.dll

-

Note that some of these file(s)/folder(s) may or may not be present. If present, and cannot be deleted because they're 'in use', try deleting them in Safe Mode by doing the following:

  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear.

Select the first option to run Windows in Safe Mode hit enter.

-

Reboot.

After rebooting, rescan with hijackthis and post back a new log. Please let me know how your pc is now.

Thank you for the quick reply! It looks like the control panel issue has been solved but I have found something else. I have kept the problem PC disconnected from the Internet and downloading everything on a second PC. I have connected it long enough for updates to download if necessary but quickly disconnect again. This time I left it connected for a while and an old copy of Symantec started popping up a number of errors like this:

Your email message to
<tserran4@corp.vodafone.es>
with the subject of
Viagra 100mg x 90 pills
was unable to be sent because the connection to your mail server was interrupted. Please open your email client and re-send the message from the Sent Message folder.

There are no email client configured to send or receive mail on this PC. Is there something else trying to send these messages? I also have installed AVG Anti-Virus Free and it did not find anything.

Here is the latest log:

Problem found - ntos.exe rootkit was found and removed. PC is up and virus free! Thank you for you help!

Still got stuff there.

Can you please do the following.

===============

Let's look for, and delete, any program segments (prefetches) that might be present, and are associated with the 'problems' we're trying to remove from your PC. To do this, let's:

1) Click "Start | Search", then search for each of these program's base name(s), in all files and folders:

287687.exe*

2) Then if any are found in the 'prefetch' folder, delete them.

Look closely, since the 'base' name will have a bunch of random numbers and letters attached to it.

===============

Run HiJackThis then:

1. Click "Open the Misc Tools Section"
2. Click "Open Process manager"

-

Next, while holding down the CTRL key, locate (if present) and click on (highlight) each of the following:

C:\WINDOWS\TEMP\287687.exe

Now double-check and make sure that only those item(s) above are highlighted, then click "Kill process". Now, click "Refresh", check again, and repeat this step if any remain.

===============

Scan with HijackThis and then place a check next to all the following, if present:

F2 - REG:system.ini: UserInit=C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\Userinit.exe,C:\WINDOWS\system32\ntos.exe,

O20 - Winlogon Notify: WLCtrl32 - C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\WLCtrl32.dll

Now, close all instances of Internet Explorer and any other windows you have open except HiJackThis, click "Fix checked".

===============

Locate and delete the following item(s), if present. Make sure you are able to view system and hidden files/ folders:

files...

C:\WINDOWS\TEMP\287687.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\ntos.exe
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\WLCtrl32.dll

-

Note that some of these file(s)/folder(s) may or may not be present. If present, and cannot be deleted because they're 'in use', try deleting them in Safe Mode by doing the following:

  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear.

Select the first option to run Windows in Safe Mode hit enter.

-

Reboot.

Please download ComboFix by sUBs from HERE or HERE

  • You must download it to and run it from your Desktop
  • Physically disconnect from the internet.
  • Now STOP all your monitoring programs (Antivirus/Antispyware, Guards and Shields) as they could easily interfere with ComboFix.
  • Double click combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • When finished, it will produce a log. Please save that log to post in your next reply along with a fresh HJT log
  • Re-enable all the programs that were disabled during the running of ComboFix..

Note:
Do not mouse-click combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

CF disconnects your machine from the internet. The connection is automatically restored before CF completes its run. If CF runs into difficulty and terminates prematurely, the connection can be manually restored by restarting your machine.

Thank you again for your assistance, it is very much appreciated...

I found a utility called SDFix that was able to scan the machine in Safe Mode and remove ntos.exe (rootkit) and wlctrl32.dll. One or both of those files was creating the random 6 digit named exe files. It also removed the audio.dll and video.dll files that were found. Once I completed those steps it appears that everything has been removed.
