My original posting is on www.daniweb.com/techtalkforums/thread17479-sp2.html . Or for a recap:
[I.E. (and foxfire) were giving me the "cannot find server error"]
I have:
Run Virus Scan (Cox's protection program.)
Spyware scan (Cox)
Run PRCView (nothing looked out of the ordinary)
Tried Foxfire (same problems)
DL'd all updates from MS
Ran Adware
Ran Winsock
I also went to Start-Ctrlpanel-connectivity and clicked repair
I went through the HKEY local and current user the only things I see that I couldn't find out what they are is BAVKRSD.exe and EXKVUX.exe and both of these when I went to the files they were supposed to be in, do not exist. (yes I searched hidden as well.)
Since the above IE runs much smoother, for a while. After so many page views it takes FOREVER for a page to load and eventually I get the cannot find server error again.

I was asked to run the Hijackthis thing and post it in this forum... so here it is: *Wow... thats a huge list!*

1. C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe

The log entry above indicates that you had at least 1 instance of Internet Explorer running when you ran HijackThis.
Before fixing problems with HijackThis, you must make sure to close/quit ALL instances of your web browser! HijackThis cannot fully perform its fixes while browsers are running.

2. Take care of the above, run HJT again, and have it fix:

3. Search for and delete (if found):

C:\WINDOWS\system32\AUserInit.exe
C:\WINDOWS\exkvux.exe
C:\WINDOWS\bavkrsd.exe

4. Your problem may not be due to malicious infections; have you thoroughly cleared out your Temp, Cookie, etc, folders lately? A lot of cruft can build up in those folders over time, and that can cause slowdowns and other problems with your browsers.

If you haven't done this already, please do:

Note: if you have data that you care about living in your Temp/Temporary Internet Files folders, please move it to a safe place before proceeding!
Temp/Temporary folders are just that- Temporary. They are not meant for permanent storage, as their contents are often delete in the course of troubleshooting, by running disk clean-up utilities, etc.

- Reboot into safe mode (you get to the safe mode boot option by hitting the F8 key as your computer is starting up)

- Open Windows Explorer, and in the Folder Options->View settings under the Tools menu, select "show hidden files and folders", and uncheck "Hide protected operating system files" and "Hide extentions for known file types".

- For every user account listed under C:\Documents and Settings, delete the entire contents of these folders (but not the folders themselves):

1. Local Settings\Temp
2. Cookies
3. History
4. Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5

- Delete the entire content of your C:\Windows\Temp folder.

Note- If you get any messages concerning the deletion of system files such as desktop.ini or index.dat, just choose to delete those files; they'll be automatically regenerated by Windows if needed. Windows will allow you to delete the versions of those files which exist in sub-folders within the main Temp/Temorary folders, but might not let you delete the versions of those files that exist in the main Temp folders themselves; this is normal and OK.

- Empty your Recycle Bin.

- Reboot normally.

Let us know if you're still having problems after that, and post a new HJT log for us to review.

Okay, I went ahead and had HJT fix the files you indicated. I searched for the three listed files... I only found the AUSERINIT.exe the other two were not found. However, Besides AUSERINIT.exe in Windows/system32 I also found it in windows\prefetch it was labeled as AUserInit.exe-28c2885f.pf should I do anything with this? (I left it alone for the time being.)
I also rebooted in safe mode and cleared out all of the temp files indicated. I think that perhaps that may have been part, if not most of the problem... I normally delete the history, and any temp internet files/cookies on a semi regular basis... however, going through ALL the users, I found over 400 files. So hopefully that helps... again, I'll wait and see...
in the mean time this is my new HJT log... sorry about the iexplorer on the first run, I really thought I had closed everything. This time I went ahead and printed your directions and made doubly sure everything was closed.

So here it is!

Thanks again for all your help! I'll edit this with comments below after giving this some time to test if it works better! Thanks for all your help everyone!

Go on Microsoft.com and download AntiSpyware Beta 1. That'll sort it

Good job in terms of the HijackThis fixes, your log is almost clean now.

Hijackthis had probably already deleted the 2 files you didn't find, but it never hurts to double-check. As for the version of Auserinit that you found in the Prefetch folder, it should be deleted too. Actually, it's safe to delete everything in the Prefetch folder, so you might want to do that just to be on the safe side. The items in Prefetch aren't critical or permanent, but infected or otherwise corrupted files can get stuck in the folder and cause you problems.

The only thing I see in your log is that the Auserinit entry is either still there or has returned. Do this:

1. Have HJT fix the " F2 - REG:system.ini: UserInit=C:\WINDOWS\system32\AUserInit.exe" entry.

2. Delete the AUserInit.exe file and empty your Recycle Bin.

3. Run HJT again and see if the entry returns or not.

4. Let us know what other problems, if any, you're still having.

Also- in addition to Sausden's suggestion, here are some other things you can do to minimize your chances of future infections:

1. Use Windows Automatic Update function to keep your system as up-to-date as possible with the most current Microsoft security and bug fixes.

2. Stop using Internet Explorer as your web browser. Because IE is so closely tied into the Windows operating system itself and contains so many security flaws, switching to another browser such as Netscape, Firefox, or Opera will greatly reduce the avenues through which spyware/adware/hijackers/etc. can infect your computer.

3. Install preventative utilities such as SpywareBlaster and SpywareGuard (links are in my sig below), especially if you absolutely have to continue using Internet Exploder. These utilities protect areas of your system known to be vulnerable to malicious attacks.

4. Tighten up some of Internet Explorer's existing, default settings to make it more secure. Some info on that can be found here: http://tomcoyote.org/ieoe.php

5. Obviously-install a good anti-virus program and enable its "auto-protect" and email-scanning features.

6. Install a firewall program such as Zone Alarm (from Zone Labs), or the "Internet Security" packages offered by Symantec and McAfee.

7. None of your utilities are of much good if you don't check for updates frequently; updates for anti-spyware/anti-virus programs can be
