Hi,

I downloaded a Trojan infected file recently, but as soon as I ran it, I realised what I had done. I immediately, activated my zone alarm firewall (deactivated previously as I was trying out a few things), downloaded and ran a scan with AVG. AVG could not pick up anything, so I downloaded spybot and ran a scan. Spybot picked up a trojan and claimed to fix the problem. My firefox started working fine after this (initially it slowed down considerably). After 24 hours of this, AVG Detected a virus and I moved it to the Virus Vault.

However, after this I started having problems with my FF, i.e. it would work for a few minutes after a restart and then no sites would open. I could close it down, but could not kill the process through the task manager, which meant FF could not be restarted.

I then went to IE, and had the same issue, it worked for a few minutes and then nothing loaded (except the Https sites, which I believe used a different port). I have run a Hijack This log on this and the results are as follows:

I believe the offending entry stopping IE from working is:

O2 - BHO: WormRadar.com IESiteBlocker.NavFilter - {3CA2F312-6F6E-4B53-A66E-4E65E497C8C0} - C:\Program Files\AVG\AVG8\avgssie.dll

There are also other BHO related entries. My skype and some other messengers seem to be working. Restarting the laptop makes ff and ie work for a while, before the problem comes again.

I would really appreciate help with this.

Thanks

I believe the offending entry stopping IE from working is:
O2 - BHO: WormRadar.com IESiteBlocker.NavFilter - {3CA2F312-6F6E-4B53-A66E-4E65E497C8C0} - C:\Program Files\AVG\AVG8\avgssie.dll
If this is the BHO stopping IE from working then you are going to suspect websites. This is AVG LinkScanner which will block sites with possible exploit codes.
ran a scan with AVG. AVG could not pick up anything,

Most anti-virus programs are not set up to pick up Trojans so this would be normal for it not to pick up a trojan. Spybot will, but not all of them Due to the fact that after that AVG flagged a virus says there is all likely hood there is still infection on the computer. If you have been running the computer without any security programs until now consider yourself very lucky.
One thing you must do is disable the TeaTimer portion of SpyBot as it CAN interfere with any fixes done.
To do this do the following:

  • Run Spybot-S&D in Advanced Mode
  • If it is not already set to do this, go to the Mode menu
    select
    Advanced Mode
  • On the left hand side, click on Tools
  • Then click on the Resident icon in the list
  • Uncheck
    Resident TeaTimer
    and OK any prompts.
  • Restart your computer

Next you need to do the following:
Please download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware (MBA-M) to your Desktop.

  • mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install MBA-M.
  • Be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform full scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When MBA-M finishes, Notepad will open with the log. Please save it where you can find it easily. The log can also be opened by going to Start > All Programs > Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware > Logs > log-date.txt.

REBOOT the computer

Next do this:
Please Run the ESET Online Scanner and attach the ScanLog with your post for assistance.

  • You will need to use Internet Explorer to to complete this scan.
  • You will need to temporarily Disable your current Anti-virus program.
  • Be sure the option to Remove found threats is checked and the option to Scan unwanted applications is Checked.
  • When you have completed that scan, a scanlog ought to have been created and located at C:\Program Files\EsetOnlineScanner\log.txt. Please post that log for us as directed below.

Reboot the computer. Run a new HJT scan. Then come back here and post the MBA-M log, the ESET log and the new HJT log.

Hi,

Thanks very much for the help.

If this is the BHO stopping IE from working then you are going to suspect websites. This is AVG LinkScanner which will block sites with possible exploit codes.

I wasnt sure, if this is the offending entry, but it looks like it probably wasnt. I suspected it because of the unusual name in the entry. Unfortunately, I selected this entry and clicked on "Fix checked" which deleted this entry. Do I need to restore it and if yes, whats the best way to do this?

I have unchecked "Tea Timer" in spybot, just wondering, should "SD Helped" be checked, currently it is unchecked too.

I ran the MBAM and it found one error which was fixed and everything seems to be working for now. Here is the log:

For now things seem to be working perfectly...should I be doing anything else?

Thanks for all the help

UPDATE:

Hi,

Even though the internet is running smoothly now, and there are no major problems. Some of the things are still suspicious. For e.g. my firewall alerted me to csrss.exe trying to access the internet, which I blocked. According to a website:

csrss.exe is a process which is registered as a trojan. This Trojan allows attackers to access your computer from remote locations, stealing passwords, Internet banking and personal data. This process is a security risk and should be removed from your system

Secondly, when I download files from my email to my desktop, they are not appearing on the desktop, however I am able to save them in other folders. However, if I try to re-download a file that was already downloaded to the desktop, i get an error saying "that the file exists", which means the file is there on the desktop, but invisble.

For now, I have decided to uninstall AVG and do a scan with Avast Free edition. I would really appreciate any more help you can provide.

Thanks

Actually depends on WHERE this file is located. csrss.exe can be a legitimate file IF located in C:\Windows\System32. It stands for Client Server Runtime.

This is a bit confusing, you say you want to download to the desktop but it won't go to the desktop but is saved to another file. Meaning it IS in the other file. It is all ready on the computer, just not on the desktop.

Hi,

* I am trying to download a file from gmail to my desktop. When I download, windows tells me that the download has been successfully completed. I have definitely saved the file on the "Desktop". However, when I go to my desktop the I cannot find the file there. But if I save the file from my email to another location (other than the desktop) the file saves properly and is visible.

* I saved an excel file from my email to a folder. When I opened the file, the contents of the file were missing, i.e. the file was empty. Even though, if I do a preview of the file on Gmail, I can see the contents.

* The internet problems are back once again.

* I downloaded Avast and Kaspersky, but I was not able to install either of them successfully.

* During Kaspersky installation, i get a BSOD.

I have run, AVG, MBAM and Spybot after the problems re-occured, but nothing has been found yet.

Would really appreciate some advice, on next actions.

Thanks

Avast and Kaspersky are both anti-virus programs. You can only have ONE installed on the computer. Just go with Avast.

Yes. I have uninstalled avg, before trying to install these. I have not yet been able to establish what the problem with the computer is, that is the reason why I thought it would be helpful to try a different AV program, as AVG isnt picking up anything anymore. I have now been able to install Avast and am doing another scan. What else do you think I can do, to determine the cause of the problems I am having?

Thanks

Well you have a couple programs on there I am not familiar with...one is this one
C:\Program Files\Executor\ I have found virtually no information on this one so I cannot assess even what it may do or cause. What IS it and what does it do?

The other one is this one;
C:\Program Files\Zamaan's Software\Browser Hijack Retaliator 4.5
I frankly had never heard of this one either or seen it recommended on any of the forums I am associated with, this doesn't mean it's bad, I had never heard of it so I had to do some research on it and what I DID find on their own website said this:

No Support for Vista
* We have discontinued the development of the product.

Plus what this program CLAIMS to do is also done, and done quite well, by several other well recommended and highly respected programs, SpyBot and SpywareBlaster are two of them often recommended right here.
I would advise that you UNINSTALL that program, see if that makes any difference and report back.

Hi,

Executor is a application launcher, that I have been using for a pretty long time and has never caused any problems. Details here.

The other one was downloaded after the problem occured, so I doubt it has caused anything. However, I will uninstall it.

I have also done a bootscan with Avast but found nothing.

I am clueless now...

Is it possible that it is a connection problem as I don't really see anything in the logs though one thing I did notice are remainders of an old Norton program on there, don't know that these would cause these problems but they do need to go.
Have no idea what version of Norton you ran but they do have an Uninstaller program that can be run, use the one which is made for whatever program you had on there.
