Hi,

My computer was infected with something that caused a lot of pop ups and it even caused search redirects. One of the popups stated that it was attempting to install something into my computer. After this, my computer would not boot. That's why I restored my computer, however the computer managed to back up some data and store some files from before. I don't know if my computer is still infected by the virus because ocassionally I get search redirects and a few popups. Can someone please help me get rid of this infection? I really appreciate it...thanks.

I am posting the hijack this log:

Hello thakkar2000, the first thing you must take care of is you are running at least portions of two anti-virus programs, Norton and McAfee. You must TOTALLY UNINSTALL one of them. You cannot run two anti-virus programs on one computer. I don't know for certain which one is the most current or the most up to date so go to Add/Remove and uninstall one of them. Bear in mind that both often have multiple listings in Add/Remove so be sure to uninstall ALL listings of whichever one you choose. I would also recommend that you uninstall SpySubtract because it is likely out of date. It now has a new name, TrendMicro Anti-Spware 3.0. So please also uninstall this program. Once you have done that then do the following:
Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware (MBA-M) to your Desktop.

* DoubleClick mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install MBA-M.
* Be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
* If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
* Once the program has loaded, select Perform full scan, then click Scan.
* When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
* Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
* When MBA-M finishes, Notepad will open with the log. Please save it where you can find it easily. The log can also be opened by going to Start > All Programs > Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware > Logs > log-date.txt.

REBOOT after running MBA-M!

Then run a new HiJackThis scan and save the log. Post back here with the MBA-M log and the HiJackThis log.

Hi,

Thanks for your help...I have done what you said... Just to let you know that the search redirects are still happening ocassionally, especially in Mozilla Firefox.

--------------------------------------FOR YOUR REFERENCE-----------------
I had done a malwarebytes scan a few day before andit had found some trojans etc. I am including this log just so you get a better idea of the type of infection this is. When I did the most recent scan (the log of which I post above in #1) many of these things did not show so I am guessing they have been fully eliminated.

Looks better. Many of the infected files were temporary files so what I recommend is this first:
Please Download ATF-Cleaner.exe by Atribune save it to the desk top for easy access.
RUN ATF-Cleaner.exe.

Click on ATF-Cleaner to run it
• Where it says Select Files To Delete, Check the Select All Option
• Click Empty Selected > OK

If you use Firefox browser, do this also:

* Click Firefox at the top and choose Select All from the list.
* Click the Empty Selected button.
* NOTE : If you would like to keep your saved passwords, click No at the prompt.

Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

Now I note by your MBA-M scans that you failed to update the program BEFORE doing either scan. This is an ABSOLUTE MUST as MBA-M updates daily at the very least, sometimes more than once a day so this program ALWAYS needs to be Updated before each and every scan, even if you do scans one after another on the same day. Your database shows 3533 and current database is 3564 so you need to update the program and then do another Full Scan and Remove Everything found.
Reboot the computer.

Then do a new HJT scan and save the log. Post back here with the new MBA-M log and the new HJT log.
Judy

Just to let you know...the page redirects are getting worse now and I am getting redirected even when I type a web address in the address bar, not just when I am searching.

I ran the ATF cleaner.

The Malwarebytes scan found nothing

You still have Norton/Symantec files running. Go HERE and download and run the appropriate Norton Removal tool and run that to get rid of all Norton files.
After you have done that, reboot the computer. Then do the following, follow these directions EXACTLY.
Please Run the ESET Online Scanner and post the ScanLog with your post for assistance.

* You will need to use Internet Explorer to to complete this scan.
* You will need to temporarily Disable your current Anti-virus program.

* Be sure the option to Remove found threats is checked and the option to Scan unwanted applications is Checked.
* When you have completed that scan, a scanlog ought to have been created and located at C:\Program Files\EsetOnlineScanner\log.txt. Please post that log for us as directed below.
Reboot the computer.
Run another HJT scan, save the log and post it back here with the ESET log.

Ok I have done the ESET scan and the HJT scan. Site redirects still continue to happen in Mozzilla however I haven't noticed them yet in Internet Explorer.

Ok, time to bring out the "big gun". Do the following and follow all instructions EXACTLY.
download ComboFix from HERE or HERE
Click on the Save button, and when it asks you where to save it, make sure you save it directly to your Windows Desktop.
ComboFix will now start downloading to your computer. When ComboFix has finished downloading you will now see an icon on your desktop.
We are almost ready to start ComboFix, but before we do so, we need to take some preventative measures so that there are no conflicts with other programs when running ComboFix. At this point you should do the following:

* Close all open Windows including this one.
* Close or disable all running Antivirus, Antispyware, and Firewall programs as they may interfere with the proper running of ComboFix.
Once these two steps have been completed, double-click on the ComboFix icon found on your desktop. Please note, that once you start ComboFix you should not click anywhere on the ComboFix window as it can cause the program to stall. In fact, when ComboFix is running, do not touch your computer at all. The scan could take a while, so please be patient.
Since you are using Windows Vista, and receive UAC prompt asking if you would like to continue running the program, you should press the Continue button.
ComboFix is now preparing to run and when it has finished you will see the Disclaimer screen you should press the number 1 key and then press the enter key to continue.
ComboFix will create a System Restore point so that if any problems occur while using the program you can restore back to your previous configuration. When ComboFix has finished creating the restore point, it will then backup your Windows Registry.
Once the Windows Registry has finished being backed up, ComboFix will disconnect your computer from the Internet. Therefore, do not be surprised or concerned if you receive any warnings stating that you are no longer on the Internet as your connection will be completely restored at a later stage in the program.

ComboFix will now start scanning your computer for known infections. This procedure can take some time, so please be patient.
While the program is scanning your computer, it will change your clock format, so do not be concerned when you see this happen. When ComboFix is finished it will restore your clock settings to what they were previously. You will also see the text in the ComboFix window being updated as it goes through the various stages of its scan.

When ComboFix has finished running, you will see a screen stating that it is preparing the log report
This can take a while, so please be patient. If you see your Windows desktop disappear, do not worry. This is normal and ComboFix will restore your desktop before it is finished. Eventually you will see a new screen that states the program is almost finished and telling you the programs log file, or report, will be located at C:\ComboFix.txt.
When ComboFix has finished, it will automatically close the program and change your clock back to its original format. It will then display the log file automatically
You should now post this log here when all is complete.
