Hi,

Would appreciate some help ... Every time I try to access an anti-virus website (using Internet Explorer), I get the "The page cannot be displayed" screen. (Other sites are fine.) Suspect virus.

HijackThis log below. Thanks.

Hi and welcome to the Daniweb forums :).

==========

Download the HostsXpert.
Run it and press "Restore M$ Hosts File" and press "OK". Exit Program.
Note that if you have a custom host file, this will remove it.

================

Download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware (http://www.majorgeeks.com/Malwarebytes_Anti-Malware_d5756.html) to your desktop.

* Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
* At the end, be sure to checkmark the Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
* If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
* Download the update from here if you have problems.
* Once the program has loaded, select Perform full scan, then click Scan.
* When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
* Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
* When completed, a log will open in Notepad.
* Post the log back here.

The log can also be found here:
C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\log-date.txt
Or at C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\log-date.txt

Make sure that you restart the computer.

Post new HJT log.

Thanks, crunchie!

Downloaded HostsXpert and pressed 'Restore MS Hosts File.'

Unfortunately, I had some difficulty downloading Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware due to the IE returning "The page cannot be displayed". I did manage it, but when I try to get the updates, I get "Error code: 732 (12007,0)". I tried the updates from the link, but I get the "The page cannot be displayed". (I found one I can download, but it's 7 months old.)

Could you/any other member attach a copy of mbam-rules.exe (which I think is the update file)?

I've run a quick scan with MBAM without the updates and it has reported zero infected objects.

By the way, the hosts file had only one entry before and after the restore: 127.0.0.0.

Much appreciated. Ant

Nope. It's caught that site, too. The only AV stuff I have managed to download has been from fairly obscure sites.

I'll PM you my e-mail address. Can you send direct?

Ant

Hi crunchie,

I managed to install the 24 Jan 2010 updates for MBAM. Four infected objects have been found over two scans, but the problem (inability to access anti-virus websites) persists.

If you could advise further, I'd be very grateful. Two MBAM logs and my HJT log are below.

Thanks again. Ant

Please download ComboFix by sUBs from HERE or HERE

 • You must download it to and run it from your Desktop
 • Physically disconnect from the internet.
 • Now STOP all your monitoring programs (Antivirus/Antispyware, Guards and Shields) as they could easily interfere with ComboFix.
 • Double click combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
 • When finished, it will produce a log. Please save that log to post in your next reply along with a fresh HJT log
 • Re-enable all the programs that were disabled during the running of ComboFix..

Note:
Do not mouse-click combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

CF disconnects your machine from the internet. The connection is automatically restored before CF completes its run. If CF runs into difficulty and terminates prematurely, the connection can be manually restored by restarting your machine.

Run Combofix ONCE only!!

Hi crunchie,

Thanks for your continued help. Instructions followed. Please find my CB log and HJT log below. Have also run ATF-Cleaner.

Couple of worrying entries there. I need you to do a couple of on-line scans please.

==

Please use the Internet Explorer browser (or FireFox with IETab), and do an online scan with Kaspersky Online Scanner

Note: If you have used this particular scanner before, you MAY HAVE TO UNINSTALL the program through Add/Remove Programs before downloading the new ActiveX component

Click Yes, when prompted to install its ActiveX component.
(Note.. for Internet Explorer 7 users: If at any time you have trouble with the "Accept" button of the license, click on the "Zoom" tool located at the bottom right of the IE window and set the zoom to 75 %. Once the license has been accepted, reset to 100%.)
The program launches and downloads the latest definition files.Once the files are downloaded click on Next
Click on Scan Settings and configure as follows: Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:Extended

Scan Options:Scan Archives
Scan Mail Bases

Click OK and, under select a target to scan, select My Computer
When the scan is done, in the Scan is completed window (below), any infection is displayed.
There is no option to clean/disinfect, however, we need to analyze the information on the report.

To obtain the report:
Click on:Save Report As (above - red blinking arrow)
Next, in the Save as prompt, Save in area, select: Desktop
In the File name area, use KScan, or something similar
In Save as type, click the drop arrow and select: Text file [*.txt]
Then, click: Save
Please post the Kaspersky Online Scanner Report in your reply.

====

Please Run the ESET Online Scanner and post the ScanLog with your post for assistance.
You will need to use Internet Explorer to complete this scan.
You will need to temporarily Disable your current Anti-virus program.
Be sure the option to Remove found threats is Un-checked at this time (we may have it clean what it finds at a later time), and the option to Scan unwanted applications is Checked.
When you have completed that scan, a scanlog ought to have been created and located at C:\Program Files\EsetOnlineScanner\log.txt. Please post that log for us.
Thanks for your reply, crunchie. Much appreciated.

Unfortunately, the malware is preventing me accessing both Kaspersky Online Scanner and ESET Online Scanner.

Assuming there are downloadable versions of these, I will try that. If not, or if downloadable versions wouldn't be effective enough, is there anything else to try?

Thanks again for your help.

Ant

Try this first;

Download the HostsXpert.
Run it and press "Restore M$ Hosts File" and press "OK". Exit Program.
Note that if you have a custom host file, this will remove it. You can edit the host file with this program too.

==

Download Delete Domains from here and run it. It will delete all entries from the trusted and restricted zone.

There's been some success... I think I've managed to find the file responsible, but removing it has side-effects.

There are free trial Kaspersky and ESET scanners. I couldn't install the Kaspersky software. The ESET software found zfyspqu.dll (Win32/Conficker worm). Deleting this file seems to cure the problem re. the inability to access anti-virus websites

However ...

When this file is removed and the PC re-started, the Internet connection starts misbehaving. I get:

svchost.exe: the instruction at "0xdec0deba" referenced memory at "0xdec0deba. The memory could not be "read".

and:

unwise_.exe ... there is no disk in the drive ... devicev\harddisk2\dr4"

I've tried allowing ESET to remove the file and (after a system restore) alternatively removing it using the Windows Recovery Console. Although the file is successfully deleted, the result is the same in both cases: after a short while connecting to the Internet I get the above messages.

Any idea what's happening? Is it possible to sort this file out and keep everything working OK? ESET log entry for the offending file below.

Re. latest post. I ran the HostsXpert again. Also ran Delete Domains. ESET long entry for the offending file is below.

Thanks again. Ant

C:\WINDOWS\System32\zfyspqu.dll
Win32/Conficker worm
cleaned by deleting (after the next restart)
