Hello. I am new to the forums. Ran across the site as I was researching for a possible cause to my problem.

I run Windows XP and last nite as I was removing some old programs that I don't use to free up some Hard Drive space (i was running low), I ran into a problem.

My desktop icons stopped working. Everything else seemed to be running normal, but the desktop icons. So I closed everything down, and rebooted.

When the PC booted up, I got my desktop background, but nothing else. I can open my windows task manager and run programs thru that, but I have no desktop and no toolbar.

Doing some reading I read about the HiJack This program, which I have downloaded and will run and post the code in a minute.

I am far from a computer god, but I can find my way around it pretty well, and any help would be much appreciated. I have a lot of music that I really don't want to lose (I haven't backed it up).

The PC is ordinarly used just for internet and music. It has a consistently updated virus scanner on it, and I also ran Spybot Search and Destroy just no with nothing found.

Thanks in advance for any help!

Probably the easiest thing to do would be a System Restore to the last Restore Point saved before you had problems.

Then, we can have a look and see if there was a malware cause.

Are you able to access System Restore?

PP :)

Well, here's my HJT. I'll try to run a System Restore as well.

Hmmm. Maybe a noob question for sure, but how can I do a system restore? Isn't it normally found in the control panel? Because I cannot figure out how to get into the control panel.

Thanks!

Can you get into Safe Mode? Boot to Safe Mode with Command Prompt and then type:

%systemroot%\system32\restore\rstrui.exe

Hit Enter and you should be able to use System Restore to go back to last point....

PP :)

And. . . . You do have a baddie showing in your HJT log. May have been partially cleaned, but more scans will probably be needed.

No worries!

Alright, I had gotten system restore to run. Ran it to Wednesday night when the PC was working fine.

No fix.

Where do I go from here?

What happens when you RightClick on the Desktop?

What happens when you RightClick on the Desktop?

I actually apologize. I jumped the gun with the last post. I hadn't clicked okay after the "system restore complete" screen popper up.

I hit okay, and my taskbar and desktop icons are back.

However, I am still worried about there being a problem somewhere that needs to be fixed.

I figured that would do the trick

-- You are probably correct in assuming that there are some baddies on your compy....

Please run through
these steps I have written.
Please obtain the three logs as directed and post them here.
-- Be sure to RENAME HijackThis.exe as directed in the steps!

1- Kaspersky
2- AVG Anti-Spy
3- Fresh HJT Log

Let me know if you have any questions . . . I'm heading out the door shortly (hey, it IS the weekend), but will be here on and off over the weekend.

PP :)
