When my PC is connected to the internet for more than approx. 15 minutes it suddenly begins sending hundreds of (seemingly) spam emails to various addresses. Outlook Express need not be open, and NIS scans every single message (causing the PC to lag) and then returns many messages saying said emails could not be delivered.

A full system scan with NIS has been run several times with no luck in resolving the issue. System has also been scanned with Spybot SnD and SEAdware, also with no joy. If anyone can offer any suggestions as to what may be causing this and/or a means of removing it I would be most grateful.

HJT log attached below.

Hi and welcome to Daniweb forums :).

Please go here & install ALL critical updates required for your system, including service pack 1a for XP.
Most malware is designed to attack unpatched XP systems - exploiting the available 'holes' - and can bypass third-party protection on an unpatched system. The most that can be done with an unpatched system is put a temporary bandage on it. Your system can potentially be reinfected within minutes of cleaning it.

When you have done that, please post a new hijackthis log.

I have updated xp as you suggested, but ssrvice pack 1A is no longer available for download according to windows update so they have installes service pack 2 on my computer. The spam emails are still happening though. I am at a loss as to what to do now, any help would be appreciated. I am enclosing the new log

I have done as you suggested with the exception of deleting

C:\WINDOWS\System 32\xod.dll

I tried to delete it in safe mode, but my computer kept timing out, as you know system 32 has lots of files and by the time I had found xod.dll the screen had gone blank and just froze. I have tried quite a few times but without success.
However I have been on line for about an hour and have had no further email spam which is either wonderful or whoever is doing this has not turned on their computer today. It is usually lunchtime onwards when I receive them which may mean it originates in the states or somewhere other than the uk??
My computer is very slow and sluggish but at the moment seems to be free from attack so I am very grateful for your help couldn't have done it without you, I am enclosing the new log so if you have any more suggestions when you read it I will try them

Good. Although I believe you are still running an older version of Java.

Now, close all instances of Internet Explorer and any other windows you have open except HiJackThis, click "Fix checked".

Congratulations! Your log looks clean - good work!

Now that your PC is clean you need to follow these easy steps to keeping it this way:

Download CCleaner and install, then run it. It will clear out your temp folders.

  1. Uncheck "Cookies" under "Internet Explorer".
  2. Click on Run Cleaner in the lower right-hand corner. This can take quite a while to run.
  3. Close when finished.

Secure your Internet Explorer by going here and following the instructions there.

Better yet, use an alternative browser! Download FireFox and give it a run. It is far more secure than Internet Explorer. Or, you can get Opera which in my opinion, is better still.

Use a firewall to help prevent your PC's control being usurped by undesireables. There is a link to a good, free firewall in my signature.

Install and keep updated, AVG anti-spyware, Ad-Aware SE and Spybot S&D.
Run them all on a regular basis, following the maker's recommendations.

Install an anti-virus. There are some good, free AV's available today. Make sure that it is updated regularly and have it scan your system often.

Check for Windows Updates. Microsoft regularly post updates for your systems safe running. Make sure to take advantage of this. Reboot when installed and return to make sure there are no others.

Empty the Recycle Bin.

For XP users.
After something like this it is a good idea to Flush the Restore Points and start fresh.
To flush the XP system Restore Points.

Go to Start>Run and type msconfig. Press enter.

When msconfig opens, click the Launch System Restore Button.
On the next page, click the System Restore Settings link on the left.

Check the box labelled 'Turn off System restore'.

Reboot. Go back in and Turn System Restore Back on. A new Restore Point will be created.

Note that all previous restore points will be lost.
