I have a laptop which is given to me by my company.
When i am inside my company's network, I am able to browse the net via the proxy. I can also browse when I am at home - but only when I login into our company's network.
I have a road runner connection at home.
I log in to my company's network through a VPN client. Once authenticated, I am as good as sitting in office. After this if I try to get in to internet via proxy, it lets me in.
Now if i disconnect from my company's network. I disable the proxy and enable "detect settings automatically", i am not able to browse.
I have tried the following
1) Ensured that link speed - is auto detect
2) when i ping, it is able to hit the site - but it is only when i try the same
url from my IE browser, it says "page not displayed"..

Do i have to change any settings...

any more details needed, please do let me know..thanks

Gerry

You need to have the RoadRunner-specific IP/subnet mask/gateway/DNS settings configured in your network connection properties when you try to access from home (that is, when you aren't going through the proxy at your work).

Tell us what version of Windows you use, and we'll tell you exactly how to configure those settings.

Hi
Thanks for your answer..
I use Windows XP

Dont know if this might help you..anyways..

when i am not logged into my VPN...and connected to road runner...
this is what i get when i do a ipconfig on comand prompt

Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection

    Connection-specifc DNS suffix : mn.rr.com
    IP address: : xx.xx.xx.xxx
    Subnet Mask : xxx.xxx.xxx.x
    Default Gateway : xx.xx.xx.x

Ethernet adapter {some vague long number and alphabets}:

    Connection-specifc DNS suffix : blank
    IP address: : 0.0.0.0
    Subnet Mask : 0.0.0.0
    Default Gateway : blank

however when i connect to my VPn and then do the same thing, i get

Ethrnet adapter Local Area Connection

    Connection-specifc DNS suffix : mn.rr.com
    IP address: : xx.xx.xx.xxx
    Subnet Mask : xxx.xxx.xxx.x
    Default Gateway : xx.xx.xx.x

Ethernet adapter {some vague long number and alphabets}:

Connection-specifc DNS suffix : (my company)
    IP address: : yy.yyy.yyy.yy
    Subnet Mask : yyy.yyy.yyy.y
    Default Gateway : yy.yyy.yyy.yy

In both the cases the top part is same..

Do let me know if u need anything else..
thanks a ton

Gerald

Guys, any directions for me...
Do I need to make my alternate subnet / gateway to the same address as that of the broadband connection

- Gerald

Do I need to make my alternate subnet / gateway to the same address as that of the broadband connection

Essentially yes, but the exact IP configuration you need depends on a couple of things:

- Are you supposed to get your IP address/Gateway IP/DNS/etc. info from RR via DHCP?

- Do you connect to the modem through a router in your home network setup? If so, is the router acting as the DHCP server for your LAN, or are you manually setting your IP info on the computer(s) on the LAN

Basically- give us a more detailed description of your network environment; that will allow us to give you the exact setting you need.

The basic network environment at home is as follows

1) The cable TV and the road runner connection is from the same outlet
2) There is a two way splitter - one which goes to the TV
3) The other is fed into the modem which the road runner guys gave me when i took the broadband connection
4) From that modem - I am connected to the net via the ethernet card..

am not sure if that modem act as a router..

with my limited tech knowledge..this is all that i could make out..

thanks for your help

Gerald

Thanks for the response.

I have to log off for the night now, but I'll come back to this tomorrow.
