Just today, after I ran Ad aware, Spybot and Windows updates, Internet Explorer no longer works. When I click on the icon, the hourglass runs for about 10 seconds, then disappears and nothing happens. I then downloaded and ran Spy Sweeper, but still no luck. Help!

I am running Windows XP, Home Edition, and IE 6, sp1. Oh, and this is my first time posting, so please excuse any ignorance.

I ran Hjt:

Have You Rebooted?

Yes, several times. Any advice?

You Could Uninstall and then Reinstall Internet Explorer? Load up Control Panel, add remove programs, then add/remove windows componants. Uncheck Internet Explorer, Reboot, and Then Recheck Internet Explorer (You might need an XP CD, I'm not sure).
That could fix it.

I've already done this and no luck. Anything else?

Yikes!

Alright, Right click on the IE Icon, and go to properties. Under General Tab, Click On Settings... Go To "View Objects" And Look for anything that is out of place, or doesn't seem like you would want it installed. I would personally clear the history and cookies and files (Cache) afterword. Maybe that will help?

Done that. No luck still. It started a few weeks ago. I'd be online for a long time and then suddenly my homepage and other pages I try to access get navigated to sony.com. Weird. I was on sony.com a bit buying some stuff but it was weird that it would only point to that page. Also, graphics would start disappearing. I'm pretty good about virus/spyware/etc. scans, so I'm bewildered. Argh!

Comatose, I was just trying that link as you were replying. It's now doing a scan "SFC /Scannow", which is taking a while. Hmmm...it's late and moments like these make me hate computers.

*Smiles* I know the feeling. Let me know the outcome.

Well, I let the scan run in its entirety, then I rebooted, let my dog out to go potty, read some hw, and of course, nothing. geez. I guess I'm going to have to rely on another browser...if you have any revelations, please share.

Have Hijack This fix the following by placing a check in the appropriate boxes and selecting fix checked. Make sure all browser and all Windows Explorer windows are closed before fixing.

Did you try a system restore?

Caperjack,

THANK YOU so very much. Your suggestions FIXED the problems!!! Yeah. I truly appreciate your help.

To Comatose and everyone else, thanks for your patience and all your help. :D

Honestly, I prefer firefox to anything else, as my browser of choice. It's really a nice browser, and can be downloaded from: http://www.mozilla.org/products/firefox/.

I've downloaded Firefox during all my fix attempts last night and will start using it. I've heard a lot of great things, so hopefully I won't run into this problem again. Thanks for all your help and patience! :cheesy:

Now that you are clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:

  1. Use an AntiVirus Software - It is very important that your computer has an anti-virus software running on your machine. This alone can save you a lot of trouble with malware in the future.

See this link for a listing of some online & their stand-alone antivirus programs:

Virus, Spyware, and Malware Protection and Removal Resources

  2. Update your AntiVirus Software - It is imperitive that you update your Antivirus software at least once a week (Even more if you wish). If you do not update your antivirus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.
  3. Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer. Without a firewall your computer is succeptible to being hacked and taken over. I am very serious about this and see it happen almost every day with my clients. Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly.

For a tutorial on Firewalls and a listing of some available ones see the link below:

    Understanding and Using Firewalls

  4. Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.
  5. Install Spybot - Search and Destroy - Install and download Spybot - Search and Destroy with its TeaTimer option. This will provide realtime spyware & hijacker protection on your computer alongside your virus protection. You should also scan your computer with program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software.

A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:

Using Spybot - Search & Destroy to remove Spyware , Malware, and Hijackers

  6. Install Ad-Aware - Install and download Ad-Aware. ou should also scan your computer with program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software in conjunction with Spybot.

A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:

Using Ad-aware to remove Spyware, Malware, & Hijackers from Your Computer

  7. Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will added a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs.

A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:

Using SpywareBlaster to protect your computer from Spyware and Malware

  8. Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.

Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically.

Glad I was able to help.

Caperjack,

THANK YOU so very much. Your suggestions FIXED the problems!!! Yeah. I truly appreciate your help.

To Comatose and everyone else, thanks for your patience and all your help. :D

Glad to have helped :)

Just noticed this has already been solved. :o
