I saw a problem posted here that resembled my problem.
When I click on Windows explorer, or my computer, or control panel, or search etc., all icons and even the task bar disappears for a couple seconds, then reappears and no explorer or control panel etc.
I read where Michael Rudas almost guaranteed that an active desktop was turned on and a hijacker running. He said to download and run HijackThis and post its log for further instructions.
Well I did this and here is my HijackThis log:

You definitely have "unwanted guests". :(

I'm moving this to our Security forum; that's the forum in which we concentrate on HJT log analysis and other "spyware"-related issues. One of resident HJT experts should pick up on this shortly.

I forgot, I am running windows XP on a Dell 4300
The problem happens everytime I try to click on windows explorer or my computer or control panel or search etc.
I don't know what was loaded or downloaded prior to problem starting. I am married with children (they all use the pc) and only God knows what was done to create problem.

WOW! Start with these 3 programs.

You Have A Variant of the CoolWebSearch Trojan.

Please Download CWShredder from HERE and run the Program in safe mode . Press the "Fix Button" Let it fix all variants. Next, Close the program and all windows and IE windows and run hijackthis and Post a Fresh log.

Reboot to SAFE mode to run swshredder

How to start computer in safe mode

Then these 2 programs .
Ad-Aware and Spybot

Download the latest version of Ad-Aware at ADAWARE

Download SPYBOT

How to setup Ad-Aware and Spy-Bot S&D
http://www.zerosrealm.com/scanning.php

And after that, please do the following:

reboot computer and post a new log

OK I did what you said, although I couldn't get to the website to see how to setup Ad-Aware and Spy-Bot S&D - http://www.zerosrealm.com/scanning.php
It told me that it didn't exist.

Here is my new logfile from HijackThis:

Ouch! You are heavily infested, and that's probably why my link didn't work for you; some of these $*#@ programs can block access to anti-spyware/anti-virus support sites.

I'm sorry, but today is my birthday and my girlfriend is making a dinner right now which smells absolutely wonderful, so I don't have time to respond. Hopefully crunchie, caperjack, or one of our other security experts will pick up on this shortly.

wow...hes rite u infected.........u need ad ware 6 n spybot S n d....i had the same thing happen to me on my celeron 600, it like it blinks at u then desktop crashes...sux,,,,if that dont work u should think about a RE install window x

Please print this out for yourself, you may need it. :)

First of all we have to remove Newdotnet, either from add/remove programs, or by going here. & scrolling down to the uninstall tool.

Uninstall the following from add/remove programs:
webHancer
Bargain Buddy
P2P Networking

Then, download RapidBlaster killer from here. Run the tool & reboot.

Unzip HJT into it's own permanent folder before doing anything in order for it to create backups. (Not a temporary folder or directly on the desktop & not directly on your hard drive). Close all (browser) windows & rescan with hijackthis. When the scan is finished place a check in the box to the left of the following entries & click 'fix checked' :

Thanks crunchie! Dinner and the evening that followed were great.
(but now I'm back to the real world :()

OK, I've done everything you told me to do with a few exceptions.
A few of the entries that you told me to check on the hijackthis run weren't there, also a number of files and a couple folders that you wanted me to delete were not there either. Everything that I did find I did delete.
If you'd like for me to list everything that was missing, I will, but I thought that the new log may tell it to you,
Here is my new log:

I really thank you again for all of your Help!!

OK- you've still got problems judging from your log; hang in there until crunchie or caperjack can get back to this.

okey dokey!!
I'll be a waiting!!! Again THANKS for all of your Help!!!

Ok. I don't want to do anything else until you have removed Newdotnet, so could you please go to add/remove programs again to uninstall it, or follow the link I provided in my previous post.
There is other stuff to remove also, but Newdotnet needs to go first.

I looked on the add/remove screen for Newdotnet and all I saw there was
New.net domains 6.30 - Is this what you want me to remove ???

Remove anything that references new.net. If that's all you''ve got, kill it.

I looked for Newdotnet to uninstall as you requested but only saw
New.Net Domains 6.30 (Is this what you want me to remove ??)

OK, I removed New.net and ran Hijackthis again.
Here is the new log:

OK- yes, delelting New.Net Domains 6.30 was what I meant.

You've still got a load of nasties in there (RapidBlaster, eZula, Webhancer, Bargain Buddy, etc.); Ad Aware, SpyBot, and the other utilities should have caught those. Did you follow the setup instructions for those programs and make sure that you had the latest updates when you ran them? Did they find and remove any of those nasties I mentioned? If so, you're getting reinfected- stay off line until your sytem is cleaned up.

I followed the instructions on Scanning with Spybot and Ad-Aware.
I ran Spybot 3 times. The first time cleaned 197 items but couldn't fix all files.
I rebooted and it ran again with problems that couldn't be fixed again.
I ran it again with same results. The items that couldn get fixed were:
Huntbar 1 item
DSO Exploit 6 items
Retrieve 1 item

I then configured and ran Ad-Aware, it ran and ran and ran until I finally stopped the run, at that time it scanned over 290,000 objects. I don't know for sure but it looked like it may have been in a loop. I thought I kept seeing the same directory names being scanned over and over again.

Another thing (may not be important, but I thought I'd mention it) I now have a firewall installed on PC and I am constantly being told that msmsgs.exe is tryinf to connect to {69.134.8.1} using remote port 1900, do you want to allow this program to access the network?? I've been answering NO. (I don't know if this is anything important or not.

After all of this I reran HijackThis again and here is the new log:

I hope now that many of the problems are gone!!!! Let me know, Thanks

Spybot is waiting for a reboot, do that first if you haven't already rebooted since your last post.

Did you run rapidblasterkiller from the link in one of my previous posts? RB is still there. We will start from scratch again. Once you have downloaded the necessary tools, do as DMR suggested & stay off-line until you have done ALL of the following. If you skip a step it is possible the fix will not work.

RapidBlaster Killer can be downloaded here. Run this first!

Close all (browser) windows & rescan with hijackthis. When the scan is finished place a check in the box to the left of the following entries & click 'fix checked' :

Reboot into safe mode following the instructions here & navigate to & delete the following if found:

C:\Program Files\RapidBlaster< folder
C:\Program Files\webHancer< folder

C:\WINDOWS\svchosts.cpl< file
C:\WINDOWS\System32\cmd.exe< file

Reboot normally after doing the above then post a fresh log plz.

Here we go,
I did run Rapidblaster before and ran it again with the same results -Nothing Found

I then ran again HijackThis and checked to fix everything that you said.

I rebooted in safe mode and found cmd application (which may have been the wrong thing to delete because now when I click start, run, cmd (to go into DOS screen) it tells me it's not there.
I could not find cprogram fileswebHancer folder or cwindowssvchosts.cpl file

Here is the new log:

Well, you seem to have fixed all the baddies anyway. Good one. Sometimes the 04 entries are what you call *orphaned* & do not have a corresponding file because it has already been removed. That is probably the case with those two you could not find.
Check out the *how you got infected* in my sig.

Well if everything look good, I can only Thank You very much for all of your Help and patience.
I have 2 questions before I go.
1) How do I get the CMD application back that I deleted?
2) Should I do something about all the msmsgs.exe that keep poping up on the firewall software? It's like something or many things are constantly trying to go to the internet. I don't know if these are trying to bring back problems, or if I'm just getting paranoid!!

The easiest way is to use the system restore & go back to a time before the removal, unless the file is in the recycle bin, where you can restore it then use the backup from the hijackthis folder.
With the other, go into *services* & disable Windows messenger, or go to www.grc.com & download a small utility called *shoot the messenger.*
Once you have done the system restore there will be some nasties there again so you will have to go through some of the removal processes again.
