Internet explorer: Where have all the pretty pictures gone?

IE crashed on me the other day (nothing surprising here then), but when I launched it again it refused to show any .jpg or .gif files.
I have reset all of the IE settings to their default states but it hasnt made any difference.
I will probably just have to reinstall it but I would rather find a simpler alternative*. Any ideas?

*Its my girlfriends computer and its painfully slow at everything. Reinstalling could take the best part of a week :)

Try this.
To turn on graphics to display all pictures.

On the Tools menu in Internet Explorer, click Internet Options.
Click the Advanced tab.
Under Multimedia, check one or more of the Show pictures, Play animations, Play videos, or Play sounds check boxes.
