Windows Mediaplayer problem

Hi, I have an XP OS and often rip from cd's using mediaplayer version 10. Just lately I find that the ripped file has a poorer, more muted sound quality than when listening direct to the cd through the pc. Also, if my son rips the track upstairs on his pc and sends it as a shared file the sound quality is perfectly ok. It seems to be my 'ripping' device that is at fault. I'm a complete novice! Any ideas how I fix this?

try upgrading to wmp version 11.
It has a far superior rip quality to version 10.
And you can get it free! :)
