Please help me get rid of Trojan.Cachecachekit

My operating system is Windows 2000, so THERE IS NO SYSTEM RESTORE.

I can follow all the instructions from the link to Symantec and Norton to the letter, except for disabling system restore because in Windows 2000 THERE IS NO SYSTEM RESTORE. Arrrrrrrrrggggggggggggg!!!!!

Because of this, doing a full system scan to remove the cursed RDRIV.SYS in Safe Mode does no good, because as soon as I start the computer back up in normal mode, it's back. And a full system scan finds it, can't fix it, can't quarenteen it, can't delete it.

I ran hijack this with the following results:

Can you please do the following.

Run HiJackThis, click "Scan", then check(tick) the following, if present:

O23 - Service: serviceMangr (tcphost.exe) - Unknown owner - C:\WINNT\tcphost.exe

Now, close all instances of Internet Explorer and any other windows you have open except HiJackThis, click "Fix checked".

Locate and delete the following item(s), if present. Make sure you are able to view system and hidden files/ folders:

files...

C:\WINNT\tcphost.exe

Note that some of these file(s)/folder(s) may or may not be present. If present, and cannot be deleted because they're 'in use', try deleting them in "Safe Mode".

Reboot.

I used hijackthis to fix tcphost.exe

I followed your instructions on phsically deleting tcphost.exe, which I needed to do in the Safe Mode.

Next, I deleted C:\WINNT\SYSTEM32\rdriv.sys

Then, I ran Norton 2003's full system scan. It found and deleted both W32.Spybot.NLX, and Trojan.Cachecachekit.

I rebooted in the normal mode and followed Symantic's instructions on going into regedit and restoring HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE \Microsoft\OLE - EnableDCOM = Y (it was set to N)
I restored HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control \Lsa - restrictanonymous = 0 (it was set to 1)
And I deleted:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\rdriv and
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\wscsvc

Finally, I ran Norton 2003's full system scan. This time it found no viruses!

Now, close all instances of Internet Explorer and any other windows you have open except HiJackThis, click "Fix checked".

After rebooting check to see if hijackthis still picks that entry up. If it does, do the following;

Start>>Run and type regedit
Press enter.
Navigate to:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\serviceMangr (tcphost.exe)

If serviceMangr (tcphost.exe) exists , right click on it and choose delete from the menu.

Now navigate to:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Enum\Root\LEGACY_serviceMangr (tcphost.exe)

If LEGACY_serviceMangr (tcphost.exe) exists then right click on it and choose delete from the menu.

Reboot when done and post another log please.

Hi. I followed your instructions, using hijackthis to fix the orphaned entry, but when I rebooted, it was still there.

I looked for the two registery keys you described, but neither of them were present. I did, however, find the following:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\tcphost.exe with 2 subfolders: Enum, and Security

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Enum\Root\LEGACY_tcphost.exe

Should I delete them?
