I'm asking this question in the context of a satellite internet service with expensive download limits... If you just accept all the recommended updates for Windows 10 (creator's update, security etc) for a single Home Edition machine how many Gigabytes will that represent in a typical 12 month period? Eg: I'm thinking maybe 5 gig for one major update plus maybe an average of 500 meg/month other stuff?

ASUS Computers I recently had dealings with Asus. The situation was regarding a malfunctioning keyboard. The computer is a several-year-old (no longer under warranty) Asus K53E laptop. It belongs to my father-in-law and because he is somewhat careless with food (he is 91 so this is understandable), something eventually got under one of his CTRL keys causing it to stick closed. Naturally, this made the keyboard (and scroll wheel) useless. At this point there were two possible solutions: 1. Clean the keyboard 1. Replace the keyboard Before trying option 1 I wanted to see if I could actually purchase a …

Guardian newspaper columnist [Dawn Foster](https://twitter.com/DawnHFoster) posted images on Twitter this weekend showing how she was able to login to the official Conservative party conference app as Boris Johnson, until recently the UK Foreign Secretary. Not only was there no password required to login to the app, all that was required was an email address, but once in all the details of user registration were accessible. So, in the case of Alexander Boris de Pfeffel Johnson (yes, that is his real name) that meant contact details such as his mobile phone number. It also meant that the logged in user could …

It wasn't bad enough that Skype nagged me with "your current version will soon stop working" every time I brought up the GUI. When I ignored the upgrade requests is started popping up notices even when I wasn't using Skype. So I finally bit the bullet and did the upgrade to Skype version 8.25.0.5. As far as I can tell, the changes are only cosmetic. Changing the font size is non-standard. In Chrome, Firefox, my email, etc, you can increase/decrease the font size with CTRL+/CTRL- or by CTRL-SCROLL. But in Skype you have to CTRLSHIFT+. There is still no way …

I had made a Microsoft Office Access 2007 database with more than 2000 records. A copy of which was given to my friend. We both made a number of amendments and added new records in our respective copies. Now I want to compare both databases & merge the databases into one. There is only one table in the database, so basically both the tables need to be merged with the amendments made by both of us. How do I do it?

Hi chaps, I have a Dell XPS17, dual booting with Windows and Ubuntu on it. I have to give it away and therefore reinstall windows. Usually, I'd format the whole HD and reinstall Windows, but I don't have the Windows CD – it wasn't dispatched with the laptop unfortunately – so I'd like to try to do everything with the Recovery partition. I checked and it appears to be there. Now, can I format the whole HD except the Recovery partition so that I reinstall windows and remove Ubuntu with some Windows' utility rather than manually formatting it?

Chrome just prompted me to restart to update to the latest version, as it sometimes does. I did it, and the browser looks *entirely* different. Completely unexpected. It looks more like Firefox now, IIRC. Not really a problem with it, just surprised and thought I'd comment.

This may not be the best room to post this in but I didn't see any room that really jumped out at me for this, and since I'm doing all this on Linux desktop it made sense. I'm having trouble placing the meta data (artists, album, title) for a .wav song that I have. Through using three different programs I'm gettin different results. I can open the file in Rythmbox and select properties for the song and I can see the text fields for all the formentioned meta data above, thie fields all say 'Unknown' and the text fields aren't …

I'm trying to get my computer to output audio in mono but despite selecting the option within the Ease of Access centre to enable mono audio, my audio is still coming out stereo. The reason I need mono audio is because I need to hear all of some audio tracks I have. Parts of the audio are only available from the left channel and some only the right but my left earpiece no longer works. In addition to enabling mono audio in the Ease of Access centre, what else do I need to do?

Hello, I have a PC at the office, which was by default a Windows 8 Pro OEM licensed one (not 8.1), but for some unknown reasons, it was downgraded to Windows 7 Pro, which is again showing "OEM" in the activation Product ID. I would like to format and perform a clean install of Windows 10 Pro (v. 1803) on the PC, and use the existing Windows 8 Pro OEM key to activate it after install. I would like to get a second opinion before doing so, knowing that the PC did not receive any of the Windows 10 free …

I've been writing about various security risks in the health sector for many years now. Usually my articles cover patient privacy, data protection and health provider network insecurity issues. Occasionally, they spill over into darker territory where the cyber risk morphs into a very real one as far as the health of the patient is concerned. Take my story at SC Magazine a couple of years ago which reported how researchers at Rapid7 had uncovered vulnerabilities in an insulin pump that had the potential to change the dosage supplied. Sure, the actual risk of exploit was low given that an …

There is no signal to the monitor, it powers up and there is the initial beeping sound, cd drives, HDD, floppy and all lights and fans work fine. It doesnt boot up. I googled to try and solve the problem and have tried a process of elimination, so far I have: 1) CHecked video card - I replaced with an old one which definately works and still no activity. I then thought it could be the AGP slot but when I put the original card back i removed the power connections for it and it started beeping, so I presume …

Anyone who knows me will happily inform you that I am, as my username implies, rather tech obsessed. I'm not a happy geek when it comes to smartphone cases though, and it's been a long time since I've been able to say I've got the perfect case for my current device. Way back, when I carried an iPhone 5, I swore by my Otter Box for protection. It was bulky, but you could probably drive a tank over it with confidence. The thing is, the iPhone was tiny by comparison to the Samsung Galaxy S8+ that I am using these …

Hello I've been facing this issue since today, whereby my TwinMOS Micro SD HC Card is not being detected by my Samsung phone, and when placed in the adapter and inserted on PC, again the latter is not detecting it at all, although in the Device Manager I can see my adapter being recognised. I've tried Google, but the supposed methods shown, like using EaseUS Recovery software and others are not working in my case as am not able to see the card as a USB drive. Any other methods to deal with this would be most welcome, as I …

Hi, I have a little problem with my PC. This 'America Megatrends' screen pops up unpredictably when playing/using my computer. Is there a way I can stop it from popping up? This all started 2 weeks ago while playing Fortnite and ever since, I have this screen showing everyday. I don't want to dammage my PC in any way! It tells me to press F1 and when I press it, information on my PC shows up. How can I stop it from showing up permanently? Thank you! Need help ASAP.

A survey of attendees at Infosecurity Europe earlier this month showed 70 percent in favour of the dictionary definition (in this case the Cambridge Dictionary) of a hacker being amended. The amendment in question being to remove 'illegality' from the definition. The current definition of a hacker is "a person who is skilled in the use of computer systems, often one who illegally obtains access to private computer systems". So what do you reckon, DaniWebbers? Is it time that hacker was reclaimed entirely (rather than relying upon black and white labels) and if so what word should replace it as …

I have a Dell Inspiron 620 desktop. I was working on iTunes when the computer froze. I couldn't get it to do anything. I ended the itunes process in task manager. Everything still froze. I turned the computer off for a bit. Turned it back on and all that came up was a black screen with a solid white dash in the upper left corner. The fans are running, sounds like it is working, but nothing. No disk in the CD will come up on screen. It just remains black. I have unplugged everything but mouse and keyboard and no …
