Can someone please help me fix this? My IE home page keeps getting set to "about:blank" and I keep getting a commercial search page. I've always had good luck fixing these things before, but this one is pretty hairy.

Please Download CWShredder from HERE and run the Program in safe mode . Press the "Fix Button" Let it fix all variants. Next, Close the program and all windows and IE windows and run hijackthis and Post a Fresh log.

Download dllfix from the following link.
http://tools.zerosrealm.com/dllfix.exe

Create a folder on your desktop, doubleclick on the dllfix and install it into the folder you just created.
1.Run start.bat and press option 1. 'output.txt' will be created in the folder. Post the results of the log here, with another HJT log.

Reboot into safe mode following the instructions here & navigate to & delete the following:

C:\DOCUME~1\Owner\LOCALS~1\Temp< folder contents

In order to view these files you may have to select 'show hidden files/folders.' Instructions on how to here.

Unzip HJT into it's own permanent folder before doing anything in order for it to create backups. (Not a temporary folder or directly on the desktop & not directly on your hard drive). Close all (browser) windows & rescan with hijackthis. When the scan is finished place a check in the box to the left of the following entries & click 'fix checked' :

Yes, I have run both Spybot and AdAware 6 Personal, Build 6.181.

Okay, I rebooted to safe mode and ran CWShredder again, which didn't find anything. I rebooted normally and here is my new HijackThis log.

Perhaps this is a foregone conclusion, but I guess I should also say that my computer has gotten INCREDIBLY slow since this thing took over. My hard drive is running constantly and my swap files keep getting too large. It takes forever for my browser to load.

That file no longer exists on that website. I followed the directions as listed. All my processes seem to be in order (Step 4). When I ran "services.msc" I did not have "Network Security Service" in the list that came up (Steps 6 and 7), so I'm assuming my HijackThis file will remain the same. I'm going to reboot in safe mode and run another virus scan and see what happens.

I checked my registry and the values that he listed are not there, so I'm assuming I'm okay (Steps 11 and 12). I'll post another HijackThis log after I've run my virus scans again.

First, I suppose, a question. In your last post, you wrote:

Did you misspeak? A permanent folder, not temporary, not directly on the desktop, and not directly on the hard drive - where else is there?

Thanks again. It already seems to be working much better. Can you give me a rudimentary explanation of what the R's and O2, O3, etc. are? I know that HKCU and HKLM are registry entries, but I don't know what a BHO is.

Not a mis-speak. I just wanted to be certain that HJT gets installed to the right place. If it goes into a temp folder, backups can & will be lost. If on the desktop or C:\ there will be backups all over the show. Has to be in it's own folder for those reasons.
Go here for a rundown on the different entries to the log.

Close all (browser) windows & rescan with hijackthis. When the scan is finished place a check in the box to the left of the following entries & click 'fix checked' :

Okay, here's what I did. I installed it in c:\Hijackthis. Is this wrong? Should I have put it in c:\Program Files\Hijackthis\ or something like that?

Anyway, I deleted the HKLM entry. There wasn't an HKCU entry containing about:blank.

Am I good to go?

Download and install APM from: http://www.diamondcs.com.au/index.php?page=apm

Close all windows except HijackThis and fix the lines above.

In the upper window of APM select explorer.exe
In the lower window find and rightclick the BHO from the HijackThis log
Select Unload DLL and click OK on the prompts that follow.

Reboot and scan with AdAware to remove the txt and html protocol association.

Okay, I ran HijackThis again and the items I posted earlier were no longer there (except for one R1 item). I had run SpyBot and AdAware so maybe they got rid of them for the time being. I downloaded APM and clicked on explorer.exe but the eplpaaa.dll wasn't there. I rebooted my machine and ran AdAware again and it lists items from CoolWebSearch and several "Possible Browser Hijack attempt" items. I have run CWShredder several times and it always shows that my system is clean.

My browser appears to be working okay for now, but every now and then my hard drive will start going like crazy and my system will slow to a crawl, if not a complete stop. I've had to do a few hard shutdowns to get out of it. I kept running out of virtual memory, but I went into my settings and let the computer reset them, so I'll see how that works. So far so good.

When I shut down the other night, I got a message that said "Other users are still connected to this computer. Disconnecting may cause them to lose data. Are you sure you want to do this?", which I definitely did. I've never had this problem before. I'm obviously getting hacked, but how can I tell for sure when somebody is accessing me? I ran ZoneAlarm for a while but eventually removed it. Should I reinstall it?

Is you computer setup with just one user account or multiple accts ,I have 3 users and if one ,besides me is signrd on i will get this message when i go to shut down ,If you just have one user you may have had the admin acct opened ,that is why you got the message 1

I suppose that's possible, although I remember doing that in safe mode but not when I rebooted normally.
