Hi tayspen,
Thank you very much for your help. I followed the steps exactly as you have described. HJT system scan with the 6 items checked ran successfully, and the log is inserted below. However, Ewido ran for almost 2 hours in safe mode, when the following message appeared (there were no other programs running):
ewido 4.0 Exception
Something bad happened in the application.
Error diagostic file saved to
'c:\Program Files\ewido anti-spyware 4.0\ewido.err'
Ewido then closed down. The contents of the ewido.err file is enclosed after the HJT log below.

My Internet Explorer (Version 6.0, SP2) would work for about 5 minutes after boot-up, then I would get the "The page cannot be displayed" error, with "Cannot find server or DNS error" at the bottom. It does not matter which website I try to open. I get the same error with both Mozila ("The Connection was refused ..") and Firefox ("Unable to connect"). I also get the same error even when my Windows firewall (I have uninstalled Zonealarm as it was giving me problems) and AVG anti-virus are disabled. Running both Spybot and Adaware showed no spyware or infections. Email however works fine.
I run Windows XP Home with SP2 and with all updates up to August 2006.
I have read the various threads in Deniweb and tried many of the suggestions but to no avail. When I ran ipconfig /all, I got all the ip addresses displayed. I tried to ping these addresses, I got the following results:
