Line 17 of your client code is your variable declaration yet you reference it in line 15 and 16. Pretty sure the variable needs to declared before use.

Most flash drives now come with an app to set up users with passwords to access the drive. You just set the privileges to read only. You can also download an app like usb secure from Cnet to the flash drive if it doesn't have preinstalled security app.

What OS? Try to boot via backup. Sounds like you may have a boot record issue. The whirring sound could also indicate a bad hard drive. Issue with reader arm.
