Sorry you had to go through all that, but sometimes it is best. Frankly, I've tried Vista Ultimate and gone back to XP Pro. I'll consider installing Vista again when a service pack or two has been released, if then. It's just too slow. Anyway, I still suggest that you check out the programs I recommended. I've used them on a number of Vista setups and they have improved functionality considerably. You might also take a look at emsi software's a-squared antispyware. It's less well known than spybot and adaware but quite good. It also has a free version that rivals anything else out there. Good luck.

Symantec products slow down a computer and do not believe in peaceful coexistence with other software: get rid of it. Revo uninstaller or my uninstaller will get rid of most of the crap it leaves behind as well. Download pc-decrapifier to get rid of other bloat wear on your machine. Ccleaner does a good job of getting rid of junk and registry errors, and downloading a trial copy of jv16 powertools (good for 30 days) will give you utilities far superior, and lee intrusive, than Symantec's. As for Defender, I find it a nuisance. There are far better programs available, e. g. Spycatcher. If you want to enable it, look for accessories, system tools, etc. for services. You will be able to re-enable it here. I would also advise downloading and installing either the commodo or zonealarm firewall. (Disable the Vista firewall in Services first). The firewall which comes with Vista stinks, and is obtrusive. Good luck.
